Intro Log: Ugh, Talk to the Hand

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for February
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: February 10th-14th
Warnings: None

Welcome to Hadriel. Your first glimpse of your new home is maybe not the most welcome - you awaken on the floor of the colosseum, surrounded by sand and walls and... trees? Yes, trees. Along with you and the other newcomers, a number of Territorial Oaks have arrived in Hadriel. They look just like normal trees, except for those welcoming smiles - oh, and they don't like you at all. They move fast, hit hard, and if you manage to bring one down it'll go out in a large, dangerous explosion. This may have you rethinking your stance on clear-cutting.

While you're trying to avoid the trees, you might come across a few of the other things the Door has deposited in the colosseum for your (its?) entertainment. Namely, a bunch of toys that no one has played with in years. But maybe one of them will tickle your fancy?

Once you've finished indulging your 90's nostalgia, feel free to look around. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers February 10th-14th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[ he looks skeptical but after another moment, slips it on his finger.

nothing seems to happen, and honestly what else was it going to do? it's a ring. it can't hear his thoughts, that's absurd. he feels ridiculous.

focus on where he wants to go. he'd like to go home, can it fly him the hell out of here? no? didn't think so.

okay, barnes. this may feel silly but try, really try. losing face really shouldn't bother him after everything he's been through. he closes his eyes and tries to focus very hard on going about a step up into the air. he opens one eye, then the other to see if anything at all is happening. ]

[and she applauds because he's about half a meter off of the ground]

You did it! Congratulations!

I'll be damned -

[ his eyes open so wide it's like they're staging a takeover of his face, and his expression is somewhere between wonder, amazement, elation, and fear because that should definitely not be possible and yet - it is.

he falls to the ground half a breath later, mercifully gracefully landing on his feet, and laughs ]

That beats a car - [ cars are incredible, but if all they needed was a ring to fly - they could slip into hydra bases, light 'em up and go before anyone's the wiser. if he could get a couple of these back to the boys in the war, they could save so many lives, he has no doubt.

hid mind can't seem to quite process the fact that he just flew, and right back up he goes, like a child with a new toy, just making sure it still works. he still doesn't go any higher; not knowing how it works is putting a big damper on his horsing around. ]
unphase: (it's across the sky)

[and she's grinning broadly, thrilled that he's able to make it work. no one else here has asked her about her flying, assuming it was an inborn power, like her phasing.

and she laughs brightly along with him]

It sure does. There's nothing like flying. [it's helped the Legion at least try to compete with the Daxamites in the White Triangle who can fly unassisted. but "try" is the important word as they also have super strength, super speed, invulnerability, and heat vision. most Legionnaires had far more modest powers, all except one Daxamite Tinya suspected was a traitor.

but there's no time for such dark thoughts when Bucky is clearly enjoying himself with her ring. she wishes she had access to another ring, so she could show him exactly how it worked and what it could do, but she's the only one from her world here]

[ honestly, assuming anything in this place seems like a terrible idea to bucky. he's not sure which is more surprising - his flying or his laughter - but either way this day isn't turning out so bad. ]

You can say that again. [ the feeling is just - insanely liberating and terrifying all at once. there's no plane around him, nothing keeping him safe, he's a pedestrian of the skies - or, well, the air inside the shop - and it's thrilling in ways his mind can't fully comprehend. ]

What's the range on this thing? [ clearly it can't take her out of here, right, or she would have already left - but then again, that's another assumption, so maybe not. he tests trying to move a bit to the right and ends up crashing into a pile of clothes. ah well, at least they're soft and it's not like they were organized to begin with - though he does of course pick them up to put them back. ]
unphase: (boys all think she's a living kindness)

[personal profile] unphase 2019-03-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
[it is a terrible idea. it may be The Worst idea ever. and she's beaming at him as he flies and laughs.

teasingly]
I guess I could, but wouldn't you rather hear something different?

[she loves flying. she flies everywhere around here, even though it's bitterly cold. she just bundles up a little and goes. she just naturally took to it, too. maybe it's those years of dance lessons? whatever it is, she's grateful for it.

and, ooops, he kind of stumbled on a rough subject, so her smile might look a little less natural]
From Earth orbit down to what was called Montana in about half an hour. [she helps him pick up the clothes]

[personal profile] freewilling 2019-03-13 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on what you've got.

[ different is not always better. sure, at the moment, it's definitely feeling like this captivity is an improvement over his previous one, but time will only tell how true that may be. ]

That's fast.

[ he has no idea how far that is - but it sounds pretty damn far. although - ] Does it also help you breathe?

[ space travel is not really a topic that's developed beyond science fiction to him, but still he understands oxygen being a major issue in need of resolution. ] -- or do you not need to? [ she did say she's an alien, after all, what does he know? his curiosity, combined with everything that's weighing on him today and the fact that he's only just met her keep him from catching that false quality of her smile. ]
unphase: (is your city paved with gold?)

[personal profile] unphase 2019-03-13 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[she giggles] Not much, other than how well you're doing. Would you believe that you're the first person to ask to use my ring?

[she really shouldn't complain since she thinks she's probably dead back home. but the aliens are a pain in the butt, the way they like to jerk people around]

I was in a hurry.

[and the less said about that, the better]

No, we have transuits for that. They're thin enough that they're form fitting and can withstand space while still producing oxygen.

[and that's what bothers her, shouldn't her transuit have protected her from the Daxamite's heat vision? those things were supposed to be able to protect someone even in space so surely fire shouldn't have penetrated it. but it did and now she's here.

and she's grateful that he doesn't catch on just yet. it's a sore subject, her own likely death, and she's only told one person about it, because they were in the same boat]

[personal profile] freewilling 2019-03-13 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding? Their loss.

[ it's fascinating! and a whole lot of fun, who wouldn't want to try it? why wouldn't they want to try it? what's wrong with them?

look, just because things are worse elsewhere doesn't mean you should put up with kidnapping bullies.

a hurry. considering she's fighting a war, he can imagine all too well what that's about. truthfully to the best of his knowledge he's in that boat with her too, not that he's processing any of it right now. ]

That's incredible - how do they work? [ he looks down at the ring on his finger ] What does it run on? [ seems too small for - anything, really. ]
unphase: (roll roll roll roll on)

[personal profile] unphase 2019-03-13 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[teasingly] I guess you're just braver than most.

[most people don't even question the flying, assuming it's an inborn power. she wishes it was, but it's not. the only real power she has is to become intangible, which is useful.

except for the one time she had her guard down.

she puts up with them because she's afraid she has no other choice. she remembers terrible pain and then she remembers waking up here.

she's been refusing to process it, trying to keep it hidden while she wears a mask of continual friendliness and good cheer]

They have a little power patch right about here, [she wraps her hand around her upper right arm] They can hold a charge indefinitely as long as there's sunlight.
freewilling: (18)

[personal profile] freewilling 2019-03-14 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't argue with that.

[ he grins back; smarter, he would say, because he thought to ask. he hasn't been feeling particularly brave since enlisting, but he knows logically he must be, because he keeps on doing what he needs to be doing, pushing through, instead of cowering or running away. ]

You don't say? They run on the sun? That's remarkable - and keep working from all this ways away? [ since he definitely doesn't have the patch on, and still he flew. ] The future sure is something. [ he's glad he got to see it here, because he doubts he'll get to see 1944 back home. he takes off the ring, though he'd very much like to keep playing with it, and hands it back. ] Thanks for the spin.
unphase: (but you know I'm never satisfied)

[personal profile] unphase 2019-03-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
[she beams up at him as he hovers in the air. she loves to see people enjoy themselves. and were she privy to his thoughts, she'd agree that he must be brave, that to be afraid and continue on regardless is the definition of bravery]

Well, that depends. Do you mean the transuit or the ring? Because the suit runs on the sun, but the ring runs on willpower. If you really think about it, really try, you can go fast enough to cause a sonic boom. And it is. It's amazing. [a pause] I miss it. [she takes the ring back with a small, almost sad smile on her face and slips it back onto her right ring finger] You don't have to thank me. I'm glad you got to do it.
freewilling: (37)

[personal profile] freewilling 2019-03-16 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the concept of 'runs on willpower' doesn't really connect. sure it has power in the name, and he was even willing to buy the ring somehow connecting to his brain and being directed by it - but powered by it? does it mean it takes out his own energy in order to operate? his finger looks completely unharmed. none of this is making any sense and he should probably give up on trying to understand, especially today, but giving up has never been in his nature.

that sad smile, though, is hard to miss. he fully understands, he's only just arrived here but he's been away from home for a while of course he misses it - and not understanding anything happening to him or around him isn't helping with that. ]

What do you miss most?
unphase: (no room to hide)

[personal profile] unphase 2019-03-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[it didn't make much sense to her when Lyle explained it, either. she just knows that when she wants to, really wants to, she can go at incredible speeds. she hasn't really had to do that here, fortunately. she hasn't had to since that awful day she finished by waking up and finding herself here.

and she didn't mean to look sad. she tries to be an optimist, tries to find the bright side in any situation, but when you think you might be dead back home, it's hard to always be on the bright side of things.

she thinks for a moment]
My team. This is gonna sound crazy, but I was a super-hero back home.
freewilling: (09)

[personal profile] freewilling 2019-03-19 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ being an optimist doesn't mean you're not allowed to be sad, or look reality straight in the eye and admit that it's a piece of shit. bucky's always tended towards reasonable optimism, at least outwardly. but when something like war or a certain impending death is looming, there really isn't much to be optimistic about, other than the odds of others - which frankly don't seem great to him, even if she is from the future and knows how it ends. ]

You got a ring that flies on will, you're an alien, and you're fighting a war for the planet - don't think that name sounds particularly crazy.

[ he offers her a small, encouraging smile. sure, he wouldn't call himself a hero but his family would and he didn't even do anything particularly grand other than fight like countless others, be hilariously outgunned, and get caught with too many, and too few at the same time. ]
unphase: (and if I die today I'll be the)

[personal profile] unphase 2019-03-19 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[and with the exception of her mother and her rejections and browbeating after Tinya joined the Legion, she's always been one to maintain a smile. or at least a sarcastic quip followed by a smile. this place tests her at times, especially when the aliens are at work, but so far she's only had one breakdown. she counts that as a success]

Really? Good! Most people look at me like I've grown a second head the moment I mention the whole super-hero thing. Do they have them where you're from?

[she smiles back happily, grateful that her explanation was accepted so easily. between her youth and the fact that she's a pretty young lady, most people don't want to take her at her word]
freewilling: (28)

[personal profile] freewilling 2019-03-20 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
[ had this happened at home, his reaction wouldn't have been nearly so accepting but after everything today - he doubts he'll find anything ludicrous. being accustomed to someone shooting for things beyond what appears to be possible for them also doesn't hurt. ]

We have soldiers. Wish we had somma this stuff - would definitely come in handy.

[ being able to slip past enemy lines from the air without drawing attention by using a big loud plane? that could absolutely tip the scale of the war in their favor. so much hangs in the balance. if he could figure out a way to send it back and make sure it lands in allied hands - he would take it.

just thinking about it is enough to kill his smile. he tries to cling to optimism, but the reality of a reprieve is that it gives one the time to come to grips with what he's been through. ]
unphase: (yes I know what you think of me)

[personal profile] unphase 2019-03-20 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[that will help him in his adjustment. in her world, she's heard of alternate universes and other planets are a fact of life. granted, it seems odd that there are so many versions of Earth out there.

sympathetically]
Yeah, I can imagine. I don't. . . know much about your period of history, but it sounds like it was really hard.

[she'd be afraid of disrupting the timelines. granted, she's pretty sure that the world he comes from isn't the one she's from.

she notices the smile drop from his face and feels badly about it. maybe she said something wrong. she bites her lower lip for a moment, then ventures]

Are you. . . are you okay?
freewilling: (19)

[personal profile] freewilling 2019-03-20 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ honestly, with so many lives at stake - he wouldn't have waited for permission. ]

Yeah, [ her question snaps him out of his own head, and he glues a smile back on ] just having kind of a weird day. [ to say the least. no, he's not okay, he and okay aren't in the same universe, but she's a young girl, and doesn't need his troubles. if someone could be there for his sisters, he would like that very much. the least he can do is his best for the people here. ]
unphase: (here we go again)

[personal profile] unphase 2019-03-21 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[she smiles back tentatively] Here can be weird, too. You know, considering the aliens and the Null and even the other people who live here. But most people are good. They really are. It was kind of--surprising? [technically, she's an adult by her world's standards. and she's older than her years, thanks to her time serving as her ambassador mother's assistant]
