Event Log: Soulmates

Who: All characters participating in the event
What: The event log for Soulmates event
Where: All over the city
When: February 14th-February 22nd
Warnings: None

Oh shit, what even happened last night? You're pretty sure you had a normal night, no crazy drunk antics (unless that is your normal night). But this morning you woke up with a brand new tattoo, and it's... a name?

Maybe it's a name you recognize, one of your good friends. Maybe it's a stranger. Maybe it's someone you can barely stand. No matter who it is, you kind of feel like you should look for them and figure out what's going on with this weird tattoo. And when you find them - well, they've got one too, except this one is your name. It would seem weird, except as soon as you see each other you kind of understand. Of course you'd have a tattoo with the name of the person you've found such an amazing connection with. You were meant to be together.

So enjoy your time with your newfound soulmate. Who knows, you might wake up tomorrow with a whole new name on your arm, a new connection, a new love. Make the most of it!

► This log covers February 14th-February 22nd
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you try to pull off a stupid stunt to impress your soulmate and fail so miserably you die, please let us know here.

yeah, give me a few.

[There's a stupid, unexplainable feeling of excitement when he reads Wash's reply. Sure, he gets excited when he sees his friends, or people he cares about in general, which is why he doesn't question it too hard. But somewhere, vaguely, in the back of his mind he realizes something is probably off. At least because of the name on his wrist, and the nature of this place in general, right? And yet, he's choosing to ignore that.

True to his word he doesn't take very long. Either he was nearby or he was rushing. He'll never tell. But his hurry does show in the way he shoots Wash another text before he even reaches the door just to cut down on the couple of seconds it would take him to open up.]

here now

[And he will indeed be strolling up by the time Wash opens the door. Smooth.]

[ Wash opens the door and is hit immediately by a burst of... what even is this? Excitement? Just happiness? And something else he isn't comfortable naming, when he sees Scott coming up his walk. It's not a bad thing, though, so he just rolls with it, lifting a hand in greeting and stepping aside to let the other man in. They've never done this, hung out at his place. Wash doesn't have people over much in general, but he's up for it right now and most of the others are out. ]

Hey. Can I get you a drink or anything?

[ Totally smooth. That's what you do when you have a guest, right? Offer refreshments. ]

I've got some stuff from the bakery in the kitchen, too, if you wanted.

[When Scott steps in he tries to maintain a casual aura about him, but for once that falls completely flat. He's tense, there's confusion written all over his face, and when he realizes he forgot whatever it was he was going to say he takes a moment to glance around and avoid eye contact at all cost.]

Uh, no thanks, I'm good. [Even by the time he glances back at Wash he hasn't gotten his shit together.] Er, so...

[He pictures how stupid he must look and he can't help but laugh at himself. Words fail him so he falls back on doing the only thing he really knows how to; get to the point.

Having left his armor behind and settled for his usual Initiative garb he raises his arm with his wrist facing up so Wash can see the name stamped across it.]

This...wouldn't happen to be familiar in any way to you, would it?

You sure? There's still some coffee.

[ Wash doesn't know how to to socialize properly, so if he isn't similarly as awkward as Scott is right now he'd be surprised to hear it. But when the other man lifts his arm and the name is visible, Wash blinks at it in surprise. He hadn't thought the gods even knew his first name, it doesn't show up on the network list.

Strange that it's not his real last name in that case, but. David Washington is what he thought he might call himself, if he ever went back to calling himself David. ]

Uh... yeah. Actually... [ He pushes up his own sleeve and there's Scott's name, clear as day. Wash shrugs. ] Some god antics again, that's all. It'll probably be gone in a couple days.

Positive.

[Scott's response comes with a small smile that he forces back as hard as he can and clears his throat. He pulls his arm back and stares down at Wash's wrist, like he's trying to keep the image of his name on his friend's wrist burned in his memory, before he looks back up and rubs the back of his head.]

Well that's an odd way to mess with us. [He was hoping in some messed up way that the answer would be more complicated than that. But that was too simple. Now what the fuck does he do? Stand here like an idiot? Shrug and go home? He would rather just...stick with Wash for a bit.] Your name, though. It's...got a nice ring to it. Cool, even.

David Washington. [He says with a slightly theatrical spreading of his hands. He doesn't know what the fuck he's doing he's pretty sure he's never been this completely stupid before. They're friends. Why can't he get his shit together?]

[ Well this is awkward. ]

It's not -- I mean, they're messing with me again, it's just Wash now. David's... part of the name I was born with but I don't use it. I'm not that guy anymore. Not since the Project.

[ He's fumbling, and isn't sure why he's giving that much of an explanation. All it would take is a correction, but he's giving more anyway and doesn't actually mind the sound of his old name on Scott's lips. Weird. Very weird. ]

Have you ever been to Earth?

[ Stop talking, Wash, stop talking... ]

[personal profile] casualryder 2019-03-11 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Huh. [Wait, that's a bad reaction and he didn't mean it like that.] Sorry.

[He doesn't know exactly what Wash said but it doesn't really sound all that good. It's usually not when you're actively trying not to be someone anymore. Either way, he silently hopes he's...okay? Is that the word? He seems okay. Shit.]

Earth? Oh, yeah, a few times. I liked to vacation there whenever I had time off. I usually went to Australia...there was this one beach I loved to surf at. [He clears his throat again. Christ, shut the fuck up, Scott.] Why?

[personal profile] hardwearing 2019-03-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
You surf?

[ Wash has never tried that... he thinks he might have liked it if he got the chance, but there's not oceans on every colony world. Wait, back on track. ]

I was just wondering if you'd figured out Washington was a code name.

[personal profile] casualryder 2019-03-11 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
A lot.

[A lot before he left the Milky Way, anyhow. And "a lot" by his standards probably wasn't all that much compared to people who weren't stationed somewhere in the middle of nowhere...in space.]

...Oh. [Oooh. He laughs at himself again, because that's pretty blatant now that he thinks about it.] Okay, that makes sense. But in my defense it is a name. Maybe not as common anymore, but...

[Shut up. Shut up, Scott.]

Anyway. I like it. It suits you.

Uh... thank you? I didn't pick it.

[ God they're awkward. This is awkward x awkward. Awkward squared, and he's never felt quite this way around Scott before but he'll be damned if he lets the gods win at whatever game they're playing. Wash seizes on the previous topic instead, since he has something kind of similar he can talk about. ]

I skateboard. I mean, not right now, since there's so much snow, but... I do.

[personal profile] casualryder 2019-03-11 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
[He's not sure the amount of awkward permeating the room can be properly measured or calculated but Scott operates on enough stubborn energy that he wont let that force him to retreat and hide in a corner like he feels like doing. Why should he? Normally he can talk to Wash just fine, damn it.

He feels like his compliment doesn't land so well but that's...totally fine. Luckily the topic shifts to something that he hopes he can't possibly fuck up. In fact, his weird awkward nervousness is momentarily pushed aside in favor of pleasant surprise.]

Really? [He wouldn't have pegged Wash as a skateboarder. The thought forces a smile to tug at his lips, no matter how hard he tries to fight it back. It's not the same sport but it's similar enough that Scott is going to count that as common ground. Skateboarding is just surfing on land and surfing is just skateboarding on water...right? Right.] That's pretty awesome. How long have you been doing it for?

[ That grin is fantastic, Wash thinks, before he can catch himself. What the hell? Not that it isn't but he usually isn't so focused on the aesthetics of someone's smile. He shakes it off, waving Scott over to the living area so they can sit down to talk. Since apparently he doesn't want coffee. ]

Since I was a kid. I got my first board when I was eight... actually, I hadn't done it in years until my last one showed up here. Apparently you don't forget how.

Surfing seems harder, honestly, you don't have as much control as boarding.

[Right. They're still standing. He'll act like he didn't get so focused on their conversation that he hadn't realized as he follows Wash into the living area and takes a seat.]

It's definitely a learning curve. But that's what makes it so exciting. Some of the best moments were when I wiped out completely over, say...catching the perfect tube.

But uh...too bad there isn't a flat enough surface around here. I'd like to see you skate. [Wait. That was meant to sound more playful. In a friendly way.] I mean, I'd pay to see that.

[No, that just sounds mocking. That sounds mocking, right?]

Uh, I bet you're incredible. At it.

[You know what else is incredible? That thing on the other side of the room that Scott is going to suddenly focus on. Yeah.]

[ Wash hadn't taken it the wrong way until Scott corrected himself, at which point the 'I bet you're incredible... at it' has a blush rising under his freckles. He, too, is suddenly very interested in something that isn't Scott. Uh. The coffee table! There are rings on it, someone hasn't been using coasters. For shame.

He recovers pretty well, though, for being so flustered. ]

Back on the desert planet I set up a mini skate park with crates and boards. There wasn't really room on the islands, though, and you can't board in snow. Well. [ He corrects himself. ] I'd try snowboarding if the mountains weren't so far away and so rocky. It's not ideal.

[personal profile] casualryder 2019-03-20 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yep, they can just both focus on those very interesting things. That wall is a really nice wall. He's going to keep staring at this wall, even if he feels increasingly more awkward the more he avoids eye contact.]

Yeah. Too dangerous. I wasn't on the islands long enough to think, "wow, I'm catching the hell out of these waves" either. There's always ice skating...but I've never actually...done that. Much less without actual ice skates.

[Is he rambling? He feels like he's rambling. He should stop rambling. Of course now that he stopped rambling he's just awkwardly silent and staring down at his lap. Which means he's staring down at his wrist. And now he can't stop staring at the name on said wrist.]

You would've had to be really careful to not get tossed up onto the rocks. There wasn't much by way of beach there.

[ Ice skating, huh..? ]

I've been ice skating, when I was a kid. And kinda used that as practice on sidewinder -- it's an ice planet, you skid a lot if you're not over the snow. We could try it on one of the lakes here, maybe. Or ask a god for skates.

[ He's not sure what they'd want in return but right now if Scott wanted skates, he'd have skates.

Wash is about to say something else when he notices Scott's gaze has shifted back to his own wrist... and Wash's name there. He can't tell if the other man is upset about it or not. ]

You okay there? It'll probably be gone by morning.

[personal profile] casualryder 2019-03-20 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[He would point out that he'd totally risk it but the last thing he's trying to get across right now is the impression that he's reckless. Which he is, but Wash doesn't need to know that. Even if Scott generally can't hide it very well anyway.]

Who needs skates anyway, right? [See?? Though that isn't as bad as surfing with jagged rocks everywhere.] I think it'd be nice to—["to try it with you" he almost says, but cuts himself off.] To try. It'd be nice.

[Alas, he finally tears his gaze from his wrist and looks back over to Wash. He seems to struggle with his words for a moment, as if he has a billion options he's cycling through before he settles for something fairly simple.]

It doesn't bother me.
