There's a secret burning in your chest. It's hot behind your ribcage, and you need to let it out or else it might consume you- but who would you tell? Who could even begin to understand what you need to say? Your closest friend? Your significant other? Maybe even someone you don't get along with very well? It's hard to know who to trust and who will even understand, but in a strange way, neither of those things seem to matter- all you can think of is what will cause someone the most pain.

Maybe you're trying to get it out in the open so you can put it behind you. Maybe you just need to come clean because the guilt is eating you alive. Maybe you just really want to hurt someone- regardless of the reason, you're aching to tell someone else your darkest secrets.

Will they understand? There's only one way to find out, and it won't be pleasant for either party involved. Good luck, Hadriel!

( At first, Kate just thinks Alphys means the Door and frowns a little. Yeah, they all took that. But the meaning sinks in the more she speaks, and that frown turns to a curious brow at the sentence. )

What did you mean?

( Unfortunately, tactfully dropping subjects is not one of Kate's specialties. )

[Look, it's not like Alphys said something normal, and it'd be interesting to anyone off the cuff like that. It's her that the concept makes nervous, the idea of her past sins bubbling to the surface. But what other way to make someone understand what this means to her when they've learned what she gave up to get here, the struggles she already endured?]

Well, it... I always kind of uhm, t-thought that this, there was a waterfall? That ran through the middle of the Underground and off to somewhere so far no one could see. It was supposed to, uhm, go to the ocean, but uh, you couldn't really tell, and I always thought maybe if you went down there it would be a portal to another world.

[Her actual self is catching up from the gods' magic now, and she bites at her lip, looking away.]

I mean it was, uhm. At the b-bottom of this... of the falls. And. Uh. I don't really know, I can't really prove it worked, right, people come here from all over the place. It probably wasn't.

( She's no interdimensional expert, honestly, but Kate's general perspective on the whole phenomenon is that it throws all the expected rules out of the window. )

You investigated?

( There's still a lot more questions Kate has about this, but mostly they're of the why the hell was an interdimensional portal your first thought variety, really. )

I d-don't think jumping off a cliff counts as investigating?

[It's an immediate effect, where her snout presses into the tightest line it's able and she looks absolutely terrified to have said that. There's literally no follow up as they sit there for a few more seconds, Alphys' brain trying to think and coming up with Only Screaming. Eventually she just tries to choke out some words.]

I just-- hoped. I was right. For once.
