Event Log: Null Attack

What: The event log for the Null Attack event

What starts as a normal day will begin to herald in the beginning of the end. On May 29th, you might see something in the sky out of the corner of your eye- blink and you miss it, but there's definitely something there, something that's not any kind of animal you've ever seen. Now that you know to look, you may be paying closer attention to the sky in order to catch the next one that flies past- a ship. A ship that that seems to be designed in a way that might remind you of the Null themselves.

As the days pass, it becomes unmistakable- the Null are here and are scouting out the area. It's time to prepare for an immediate attack and start putting all those contingency plans to good use. Will you gear up for a fight and fall into formation? Will you close and lock your doors and stay inside? Or perhaps there's some other plan that you want to enact?

You'll have time to discuss that on the network later, but now you need to start reacting to the Null's actions- which are apparently to start building smaller encampments around the city as they try to find the way inside. Confusion is holding them at bay for now but it might be time to start building some defensive measures and fortifications, because she won't be able to keep them at bay forever.

When they break in, they do so in a big way- with a massive explosion at Confusion's temple that rattles throughout the entire city. It's obvious that something has happened- and what exactly that something is reveals itself shortly when Null begin to flood the city, having broken through Confusion's protection.

This is when the fight escalates to an all-out war. Nobody is spared, and they're watching everyone from above. What will you do? How will you keep the ones you love safe? How can anyone survive this? All you can do is fight back, all we can do is wait. Good luck, Hadriel.

[heartfelt] You'd better not die. Here, or anywhere else.

[blushes faintly] I know. I just feel--responsible.

[unphase]

Eventually. As in when you're one hundred years old and surrounded by those who love you. Not until.

[theweakhavepurpose]

Surrounded by my dogs huh?

Sounds like a nice way to go.

[unphase]

By your dogs and by people who love you. And it would be.

Okay lets not get carried away here. Dogs first. Then we'll see if I can develop enough social skills for people.

[unphase]

[she reaches over in an attempt to squeeze his hand]

You will. You'll get there. People who aren't me will see what there is to love about you.

You're awfully optimistic about this.

[But he smiles, because it's exactly what he needs to hear.]

[she smiles back warmly]

I'm optimistic about you. Always have been.

Yeah. You can see the good in people. It's rare.

I only see the terrible.

[unphase]

I guess not even years following the diplomatic corps could drill that out of me.

In everyone?

Pretty much. They usually prove me right, so it's kinda a curse.

[unphase]

[thoughtfully] Usually. In your world. What about this one?

[theweakhavepurpose]

[He actually thinks about it for a bit.]

No, most of the people here haven't been terrible. And the ones that are weren't trying to hide it.

People seem to genuinely want to help each other here. Which.. is kinda nice.

[unphase]

That's something. That's more than most worlds can say. I've seen enough of them to know that for sure.

[theweakhavepurpose]

How's this compare?

[unphase]

[she sighs] The United Planets just formed, brought about in the wake of negotiating peace between Braal and Titan. But there are still people who only see things in terms of what they can benefit from it. And the racism! [she looks vaguely indignant. like a kitten] You would think that in the wake of forming an interstellar alliance of worlds, those worlds would be more inclined to put aside their differences. [a pause] You would be wrong.

[theweakhavepurpose]

Nah, people love to hate each other. I live in a place where everyone is supposedly all about community and God Bless America, but the minute anything might make them uncomfortable for ten seconds they're ready to grab their rifles and deal with it.

Which definitely includes people who don't think the same way as them.

[People are people apparently. Even in space.]

[unphase]

[she sighs and looks a bit dejected] I guess we really haven't made as much progress as I'd like to think. But. I've got to believe that there's always a chance to be better.

And people shouldn't be afraid to think differently than others. A lot of the time, that's how progress begins.

[theweakhavepurpose]

Yeah. I guess we all know that, but then when it comes down to it... People like comfort and routine.

Not that there aren't people out there trying, or being better. But they're pretty rare. Like you. You're kinda the only person like that I've really met.

[unphase]

They do . . . until something comes along that shocks them out of their complacency.

[her eyes widen] Okay, I'm going to have to hug you now. If that's all right with you.

[theweakhavepurpose]

This is like hug number four I'll have you know. We're going over my quota of one or less hugs per year.

[He braces for impact.]

[unphase]

I'm sorry. It's just that you're so good to me.

[and she hugs him, squeezing tightly before letting go]

There. That wasn't so bad, was it?

[theweakhavepurpose]

I don't think your exposure therapy is working. It's not getting better.

[He still reacts to hugs like a cat that's about to get a bath. ]

[unphase]

[she looks disappointed. really disappointed]

Really? [she sighs and looks off into the distance for a moment before returning her attention to him] Do you want me to stop? It's okay to say yes.
