Intro Log: Death Comes

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for July.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: July 10th-15th
Warnings: Deathclaws. That's all you really need to know.

As usual, the new arrivals in Hadriel will be waking up on the dirt ground of the colosseum, and as usual, they won't be waking up alone. This month brings coat hangers of all shapes and, uh, sizes strewn about the colloseum floor around all of the new arrivals.

Get up, get out, meet and greet, find some new exciting interior decorating options, but don't forget about the more prominent threat: the (newly) local deathclaws roaming about in the inner halls of the arena. These deathclaws are vicious bipedal creatures with long arms ending in curved talons, horns ripe for goring and, of course, teeth as long as fingers. These animals have been engineered to be as deadly as they can possibly be, so you might want to buddy up before taking one on.

Have you escaped from the deathclaws? Made a few friends? Not died horribly? Great! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers July 10th-15th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

Nice t' meetcha Jack.

[Nope, the name doesn't ring any bells at all. He's completely oblivious that the man he's talking to was royalty. Not that he would have treated him too differently if he knew.]

Shiloh? Y' mean the one in Ohio? [That might explain the accent at least]

I'm from out near Elkins, West Virginia, 'bout ten miles outsida town.

[His family's house has been there for a hundred years, but good luck finding it on a map. The road was hard to find, hardly anyone that didn't know what there were looking for could find it at all.]

Likewise.

[It's murmured, because it almost sounds like Corbin meant that. Jack trusted his men, the way that soldiers have to trust each other, but he's never had a friend that he actually did. They all, he assumed, wanted something from him. And until David Shepherd, he was right about that.

Now he has nothing to give, and it's something of a novelty.
]

I don't know either of those places. I'm assuming they're the country?
crowboy: (I brought you something shiny)

Not sure 'bout Shiloh, I ain't ever been there, 'less you mean the one in the Bible, and I don' think ya look like one a them Israelites [It's probably best not to say how he pronounces that] so I figgered that might be where yer from.

But yep, Elkins is a nice town, gotta college there 'n errythin', but it ain't no big city.

[He's wanted to go to a big city, he grew up listening to his uncle Gunther tell him stories about going to places like New York and London and Paris, but he's always had to stay home for one reason or another.]

I fear you're going to miss it.

[Because this? Does not look like a nice town. The more Jack listens to him talk, the less offensive to his ears the accent gets. He wouldn't go so far as to call it charming, but it does make him smile a little.]

Are you scared?
crowboy: (Sulky crow)

[personal profile] crowboy 2016-07-16 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm thinkin' yer right, Jack.

[He's never gone more than fifty miles from home before, never had a reason to, the idea that he's obviously somewhere far away, where nothing is familiar, has him already craving the mountains and forests and creeks.]

[He sighed at the question and thought for a moment before replying, counting things off on his fingers]

I figger I got a few options here. I'm either dead, which case I don' have to be feared a dyin'. I'm dreamin', which case I'm gonna wake up an' tell Granny 'bout all this, so again, ain't no reason to worry. Or... [He paused and grimaced] All this shit's real, I ain't go no idear where I might be, an' there's nightmares chasin' me. An' Katie an' Lo 'r still in trouble an' I can' do nothin' 'bout it. In which case, I got plenty reasons to be scared.

[He takes a deep breath, lets it out]

So yeah. Ah'm plenny scared right now, an' I don' mind admittin' to it.

[He makes sense. Jack wishes he could voice support for the idea that they're already dead, or that this is just some horrible dream, but he's already had an experience with this world where he'd considered those same possibilities and had them dismissed. He knows this is real, no matter how strange and unlikely it is. And it sounds like Corbin knows it too. Good. The denial would only eat away at precious time.]

You're not alone. [Jack's not particularly good at comforting people, but he's seen war with other scared young men before. He falls back on that experience now.] But you'll get through this, and some day you can tell your granny all about it.

[The word sounds strange coming from Jack.]
crowboy: (Well shit)

[personal profile] crowboy 2016-07-20 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Corbin figures that, even if it is one of the first two options, he needs to behave like it's the third one, just in case.]

[Jack gets a smile and a nod, a friendly hand on the shoulder, because he had sort of known that already, but it was nice to hear someone else say it. It was also funny to hear Jack say 'granny', just a bit.]

We c'n both get through it.

[They emerge from the colosseum, and Corbin looks up, he hadn't really had much of a chance to before, and had assumed the rock ceiling was a feature of the building they were clearly in.]

Where th' hell're we at?

[personal profile] benumbing 2016-07-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
[He bites down on his bottom lip. If getting through it means returning, then he'd just as soon not. He'd rather not go into his reasons for it though, so he says nothing, and lets the cave provide the distraction.]

Underground, or something made to look like it. [He turns around, looking up at the ceiling and trying to figure out exactly where the light is coming from.] Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine.

[Jack reaches over to touch him before pointing at one of the tunnels.]

A way out or certain death? Which one do you think it is?
crowboy: (It's either this or I pluck your eyes ou)

[personal profile] crowboy 2016-07-21 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[While Corbin has a loving family to go back to, he knows not everyone does. He might not really get it, but he'd understand if Jack told him he had a shit situation to go back to. And then probably invite him to come back to his family's home instead.]

[He's looking up at the ceiling, trying to figure out where the light is coming from as well, hoping to find a hole or some sort he could feasibly fly out of.]

[he looks over, following his pointing hand]

No way t' know til we try it. Ya up fer a bit've explorin', Jack?

As long as you still have bullets.

[His smile at Corbin is extra saccharine, but he does like the attitude that the other young man shows. And for now, by his side does seem like the safest place to be.

It's a favor that Jack won't forget.
]
crowboy: (I want to fly)

[personal profile] crowboy 2016-07-24 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Tha's the sixty-four thousan' dollah question, ain't it?

[he takes the clip out of his rifle, counting the bullets left before sliding it back home, his movements not quite the same as a soldier's but still of someone who knows their way around a rifle. He pulls another (full) clip out of one pocket and then (an empty) one out of the other.]

Looks lik've got 'leven bullets. I ain't in a hurry t' spend 'em, but if'n there's a way out, I'd have t' be dumber'n a sack a bricks not t' try't.

[Once those bullets are gone, they're gone. He doesn't know where he's going to get more bullets in a cave, he didn't even have the supplies to reload the spent brass with. But he figures it just might be worth it to get out of this weird cave]
