Intro Log: Death Comes

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for July.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: July 10th-15th
Warnings: Deathclaws. That's all you really need to know.

As usual, the new arrivals in Hadriel will be waking up on the dirt ground of the colosseum, and as usual, they won't be waking up alone. This month brings coat hangers of all shapes and, uh, sizes strewn about the colloseum floor around all of the new arrivals.

Get up, get out, meet and greet, find some new exciting interior decorating options, but don't forget about the more prominent threat: the (newly) local deathclaws roaming about in the inner halls of the arena. These deathclaws are vicious bipedal creatures with long arms ending in curved talons, horns ripe for goring and, of course, teeth as long as fingers. These animals have been engineered to be as deadly as they can possibly be, so you might want to buddy up before taking one on.

Have you escaped from the deathclaws? Made a few friends? Not died horribly? Great! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

Brooklyn, 1943.

[A corner of his mouth tugs up into a smile. He's talked to a lot of people who are from the future, even his own future. It's nice to meet someone who's not ahead of him for a change.]

I recognized your accent too. A friend of mine was from England. She's probably the last person I talked to before I showed up here.

[Steve sighs because...well, Peggy.]

What's the last thing you remember?

[pullback]

I would ask about her but, unless your friend is an old woman, I doubt I would know her,

[ said with a wry little smile. And really, considering he only knows like three ladies, it wouldn't be one of them anyway. As for his question, ]

I was attending a funeral. [ said in a tone that implies "I'd rather not talk about it." ] Certainly a less than ideal place to abduct someone from.

She's far from it. She's young...beautiful.

[Ahem. Steve can't even imagine Peggy as being old. It's all chestnut curls and red lips.]

My condolences.

[Steve frowns at that. Talk about kicking a guy when he's down.

(He wonders if it was one of his patients, but Steve has enough tact not to ask.)]

Is there anything you need? Food? A place to stay?

[pullback]

[ Part of Victor wants to politely refuse, of course he doesn't need anything, there's nothing wrong here. However...he is hungry. ]

Food would not go amiss—if you're offering, of course.

I am.

[And it seems like a good idea to get out of here before the monsters corner them. Steve would foolishly try to fight them, and it's probably too early to see just how good Victor's skills are.]

It's nothing fancy. The same can be said for the housing, but it's something in your stomach and a roof over your head. I'm guessing you appreciate that as much as I do.

Truth be told, I'm used to nothing fancy. [ he's perpetually poor and always has no money. ] A roof over my head and food in my belly is the least I ask for.

I think we're the lucky ones. The ones who come after us, they're used to a lot more. So it's gotta hurt more when they don't have it here.

[It's better once they're out of the colosseum where the monsters are always concentrated around this time, but Steve still looks about for the random one that could always show up.]

Still, their technology would be something to see. Did you know everyone has a color television? And the devices we use here to talk to each other - I thought they were pretty amazing, but apparently they're common too. They're called "smart phones". [Steve snorts softly before shaking his head.] Not sure I need a phone that's smarter than I am though.

[pullback]

[ When they talk about technology, Victor's eyes just light up. This is a man who goes out of his way to keep up with developments in electricity, the idea of technologies that he hasn't seen before is just mind-boggling. ]

I have no idea what a television is, but I assume this "smart phone" is some sort of corruption of the telephone? I've heard of Bell's creation, though I haven't actually seen one in person.

Yeah. We use them to talk to each other across distances here. No wires or cords or anything. You can actually see who you're talking to through the video too. And text - it's like typing on a little screen.

[It's all still kind of crazy to Steve too, but also sort of wonderful. He glances over, catching the other man's intrigued expression.]

There's big things ahead of us, Doc. But I don't think they've perfected the flying car yet.

My world hasn't even perfected a "car" yet.

[ What's a car? Fuck if Victor knows, he's too busy dreaming of smart phones and how eventually he'll take one apart and oh man, who knows what it'll be like. ]
