Intro Log: Don't Wake Tonberry

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for September
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: September 10th-13th
Warnings: Cute monsters, a way to pass the time, and plenty of newbies!

Waking up in Hadriel certainly has its down sides, but if this weird murdercave city is good at one thing, it's keeping people entertained. As you awaken on the hard ground of the colosseum, you might see a rectangular cardboard box lying near you. Ignore it for now, as you get your bearings, but if you get bored? Well, you'll find these exciting and unique board games will keep you entertained!

But how could you possibly get bored, when there are plenty of cute monsters around to keep you company? Sharing the colosseum with all the new arrivals are Tonberries. In addition to their natural cuteness defense, they also carry very large knives. They're slow-moving and look innocent and even friendly, but be careful - one strike from that knife and you'll be a bloody mess. They won't attack unless you get too close, but who doesn't want to hug a Tonberry? And of course, if you attack, they'll counter with extreme prejudice.

Managed to resist the urge to hug a Tonberry? Safely escaped from the clutches of the colosseum, new board game in tow? Awesome! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers September 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[The only reason Sam halts in her tracks and turns back around is because that sounds unmistakably like Mike's voice, and that - well, it's just not possible. Right? Sam watched what the wendigo did to him in the lodge with her own eyes, after all. But in some ways, she still hasn't fully processed it - her brain knows the truth of what she witnessed, but her heart refuses to accept it.

Maybe that's why she turns back around to investigate - some far-flung grasp for hope that maybe, maybe what she saw was wrong. Sam steps back into the doorway, squinting into the distance.]

... Mike?

[ The outline of someone emerges from the tunnel, and — ]

Sam!

[ He makes a beeline for her, Wolfie following at his heels. ]

What the hell? I told you guys to wait at the lodge!

[It's Mike.

It can't be Mike, but somehow, impossibly, it's him. Sam's field of vision wavers for a moment; she takes a deep breath and forces her eyes to focus.

It's Mike. And ... a dog? No, not quite a dog. Something else.]

The lodge?

[Sam shakes her head. She blew it up. She didn't exactly see it happen, but she felt the blast, the heat of the flames licking at her back. Then nothing, until she woke up here and now.

Something about this isn't right, and considering what's happened in the past several hours? That says a lot.]

Who's your friend?

[She nods, indicating the wolf. Clearly, that's the most important question at hand.]

[ She looks at him like she's seen a goddamn ghost instead of the shaken but determined person he'd seen just not half an hour ago. ]

This is Wolfie. It's all right, he's trained. He belongs [ belonged ] to that old guy with the flamethrower.

Sam, what's going on?

[personal profile] sedula 2016-09-15 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
The flamethrower guy had a pet wolf?

[Somehow, she can't even pretend to be surprised. Still, if he's friendly, that's probably fine. Sam falls into a crouch on the ground and holds her hand out, palm down - it's what you do when you meet a dog for the first time, and aren't wolves and dogs related? Everything she's ever read said not to approach a wolf, but that was for wolves in the wild, not those that have been trained.]

I don't know, Mike. I just woke up here, and -

[And you're supposed to be dead, and so is everyone else. Everyone except Emily and me - we made it out alive.]

It's not the mountain. I'd think we were rescued, but they wouldn't just drop us in the middle of somewhere else, right?

[personal profile] snowballers 2016-09-15 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
They're good hunters, right?

[ Two wolves, really, but better not to mention that. Wolfie sniffs at Sam's hand, then nudges it, and circles her. ]

No, I guess they wouldn't — have you seen one of those things anywhere? There's more than one, Sam, there's like... twelve.
sedula: (if they catch you too early)

[personal profile] sedula 2016-09-16 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they are - good boy.

[The latter an almost-whisper directed at the wolf. To answer Mike's question, Sam shakes her head.]

The wendigos? Not in the whole five minutes I've been conscious. You actually counted them?

[There were three in the lodge, plus the one Sam took out with the shovel down in the mines. However many more Mike blew up in the sanatorium, she isn't sure.]

There shouldn't be any more coming.

[personal profile] snowballers 2016-09-16 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
No, but there were twelve miners who survived back in the fifties. If the flamethrower guy got a few, great, but there should be twelve.

[ He got two, but that doesn't even make the number single digits. ]

I don't see one around here, though, nothing except those guys.

[ Pointing to a Tonberry. ]

[Something is nagging at the back of Sam's mind, something not quite a memory, not quite a dream, something that whispers to her that she isn't where she should be. This isn't the mountain - that's obvious enough - but something about the air feels different here, and the creatures wandering around aren't human, and they aren't wendigos, but that still probably means danger. Sam pushes herself back up to her full standing height and gives the nearest Tonberry a wary eye.]

I don't think I want to wait around and see if any of them show up - or to find out if those are friendly. I think we need to find a phone or a radio tower or something and call for help.
snowballers: (008)

[personal profile] snowballers 2016-09-20 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
[ He presses a hand on her back to push her ahead as Wolfie starts leading, his finger along the line of the shotgun trigger. ]

I found this in my pocket.

[ He holds out the communicator he found in his pocket. ]

There's all kinds of weird shit on it, I didn't read too far.
sedula: (if they catch you too early)

[personal profile] sedula 2016-09-20 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
No signal?

[Obviously, if he didn't already call for help using it. Curiously, there's a slight bulk in one of her own pockets, and she fishes out an identical phone to the one Mike has.]

What the hell? This isn't mine.
snowballers: (004)

[personal profile] snowballers 2016-09-20 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, mine's back in the cabin.

[ He shakes his head. ]

Do not tell me there's a portal to another dimension on that mountain along with the other shit.
sedula: (i won't tell)

[personal profile] sedula 2016-09-23 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the mountain really is cursed.

[At this point, Sam is inclined to believe anything's possible. She tucks her new phone back into her pocket, shaking her head.]

Well, we're not going to find out by just standing around here.
snowballers: (003)

[personal profile] snowballers 2016-09-23 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. Let's move. This way?

[ He waves to Wolfie. ]

Here boy.
sedula: (if you don't ask)

[personal profile] sedula 2016-09-26 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like as good a direction as any.

[She nods, and takes off in that direction - not quite at a run, but a brisk pace nonetheless.]
snowballers: (006)

[personal profile] snowballers 2016-09-27 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
If you see any of those things —

[ He swallows. ]

Wolfie's trained to hunt them, I think. He'll let us know if we're in danger.
sedula: (i won't tell)

[personal profile] sedula 2016-10-03 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Someday, Mike, you're gonna have to tell me how it is you know how to talk to wolves.

[Out of the group of them, Sam would probably have been voted most likely to, not Mike.]
snowballers: (002)

[personal profile] snowballers 2016-10-03 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Someday you're gonna have to pry that secret out of me.
