Intro Log: Don't Wake Tonberry

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for September
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: September 10th-13th
Warnings: Cute monsters, a way to pass the time, and plenty of newbies!

Waking up in Hadriel certainly has its down sides, but if this weird murdercave city is good at one thing, it's keeping people entertained. As you awaken on the hard ground of the colosseum, you might see a rectangular cardboard box lying near you. Ignore it for now, as you get your bearings, but if you get bored? Well, you'll find these exciting and unique board games will keep you entertained!

But how could you possibly get bored, when there are plenty of cute monsters around to keep you company? Sharing the colosseum with all the new arrivals are Tonberries. In addition to their natural cuteness defense, they also carry very large knives. They're slow-moving and look innocent and even friendly, but be careful - one strike from that knife and you'll be a bloody mess. They won't attack unless you get too close, but who doesn't want to hug a Tonberry? And of course, if you attack, they'll counter with extreme prejudice.

Managed to resist the urge to hug a Tonberry? Safely escaped from the clutches of the colosseum, new board game in tow? Awesome! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

( there are a lot of worse things, but somehow the awkwardness of the situation is turned up to eleven when you're standing, near-naked, in front of the Washington sisters. he clears his throat, tries to grab for a pair of trousers without completely blanking Hannah at the same time.

(that doesn't go so well. he stumbles, trying to pull a pair towards him with his foot, and nearly slams the door in her face.

it's probably a good thing she's looking away. that was undignified. and trying to be dignified in front of Hannah, after everything, is the least he can do, right?)

but, eventually, he at least has clothes on. and steps out. )

Oh. ( ... oh. it's vague, but does it need to be anything more? Matt swallows around a lump in his throat and feels his hand drift towards the back of his neck, massaging a knot he didn't realise was there until right now.

shit. ) Look, I-

Shit, Hannah. I'm so sorry.

[ She misses most of his trousers misadventures and instead stares very hard at part of the wall, letting her mind wander, briefly to wondering how the places had been constructed here, and why...

Then Matt speaks. Back to reality. To her awful, unbelievable reality. ]

It's - [ Fine? She still remembers easily how shocked she'd been to see Matt as part of the prank group. If the situation were different, if the prank had been on... Ashley, or Sam, then would she herself have been roped in?

Hannah wants to say no, of course, not, but - ]

Okay. [ She says finally, quietly. ] I get it.

[ Emily and Jess could have talked her into just about anything. In a way, that's exactly what happened. ]

I know you didn't, um... that you didn't mean to hurt me.

[ Matt didn't, at least. ]

( they would all want to say that, right? if they'd known what kind of consequences it would have? that Hannah and Beth would have run out into that night and never return, never to be found.

yeah, if they'd known what that prank would set off... if he'd known, maybe he would have done something, not just let Em and Jess steamroll their way into it, not convinced himself that it was something that was just a bit of fun, or that Hannah's obvious crush on Mike was hurting Em and that needed to be nipped in the bud.

not thought any of the million things he did that culminated in him standing with that camera ready.

he swallows, unsure what to do with his hands, with anything - crossing his arms, uncrossing them, gripping his elbow, running a hand through his hair as if any of this can be sorted by nervous habits, like they'll allow him to come across the right thing to say. )

It was-

( shit. what can you even say? )

- Really, really dumb. Em was just--

( he cuts himself off, not sure how to finish that.

mad.

she was hella mad. )

I know.

[ She knows it was dumb on both sides. Knows what Emily must have been feeling. ]

We talked about it, actually. She - We both apologized, and it... was really good.

[ Somehow. It had assuaged some of the fears on both sides... though, of course, that had been before she'd been told about her eventual fate. About what happened after. I can't blame her for that. That was... It sounds like hell. ]

I was being selfish. [ Hannah mutters, still not looking at Matt. ] I had a crush and - it's a crappy thing to do, going after someone else's boyfriend.

[ No matter what your feelings. I'm not that girl.

Right? ]

( that's... well. he's already noticed the changes in Emily, not only the physical, but how she's reacted to him after all the months down here. but then, she always felt bad about it, didn't she? like all of them. even if she kept it quiet, it could be seen in the flicker of her eyes whenever news about them came up, whenever someone mentioned their names. )

I mean. Yeah. It was. ( it's not meant badly, Matt so rarely means anything badly, but there's no point in trying to sugarcoat or deny it. Hannah's crush went way too far, but- ) All of us fucked up, I guess. ( there's no other way around it. )

But, like, you're here now, right? ( which means they have a chance to - if not change things, at least have time where things can be like they were. where the twins are okay again. ) You think, uh, we could be good again?

[ There's a pause, a silence in which she remembers her surprise in seeing him among the prank group.

She hesitates, and then nods faintly. ]

Yeah, I think so. [ Hannah admits a tiny smile, however hesitant. It's a start. ] I'd like that.

[ If this is really her last shot at... living, then, yeah. Better to carry on without a dozen grudges, if possible.

Others may not be so easy to forgive, but she'll cross that bridge when it comes. ]

( there's a moment that passes, one where an invisible weight seems to melt from his shoulders with the exhale of breath, and Matt says: )

Great.

( and smiles. )

It's great to see you, Han.

[ After a pause, Hannah smiles in return. ]

It's great to see you, too, Matt. [ Even if she'd just seen him in her world... this is very, very different. ] I'm, um... glad you're okay.

[ And happily with Emily, who seems very, very different, these days. ]

( yeah, he's noticed that too. everything's very different. Emily's been here a long time and he's not yet sure how to feel about the changes that's brought, or the fact that people are all over their timeline-

it's gonna take some time to get some concrete thoughts on that. for now he's just going to be glad that everyone is together, even Hannah. especially Hannah.

but for now, he just nods, lets the silence sit in a way that isn't quite comfortable, despite its familiarity. )

... Is there much to do here?

Um... [ Hannah considers the question with an almost surprised laugh. ] Sort of? I mean, Emily has her sewing shop, and Chris has this... coffee cart thing. I've been helping them both a little, but, honestly, I need more to do.

[ She'd been over-committed back home, after all, and this is... very different. ]

I think there is, though. You just have to find something to do, or make something, if what you want isn't here. I was thinking of, like... starting a club sports group, or something.

( he knows this feeling. he could probably find somewhere to practice, keep himself in shape for the next season back home. but that's just one thing in a myriad of things. he used to have chores, have duties and homework and a social life. )

Well, uh, if you want help... ( he points at himself with a thumb. ) Gotta stay in shape for next season, you know.

You'll be the first one to hear about it. [ Hannah assures him, smiling. ] Might be kind of hard with the... um, terrain, but we can figure it out.

[ "Next season." Her blood chills briefly as she remembers that they won't both have a next season. ]

... We can talk about it later? Once I... get some more ideas together?

Yeah. Of course. I mean- ( this place doesn't exactly scream "we have a full gym and sports hall" ) -Don't think this place does a lot of sports equipment, does it?

... No, good point. [ She tilts her head a little, considering. ] But, maybe we can ask one of the gods about it? I think they give out stuff sometimes.

[ If you do stuff for them, that is... ]

( that... he was not expecting but that's cool. ) They do that?

Mm-hmm. Emily said she trades fabric for... something with Delight. I think you just have to make other people happy somehow.

[ Makes sense, because. Delight. ]
