Event Log: Keepsakes

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Keepsakes event!
Where: All around the city
When: October 15th-October 19th
Warnings: A bunch of random crap.

Well, Hope and Delight are messing with the door again, but at least this time dragons aren't involved, right? This attempt goes a bit better - sure, no one gets sent home, but if everyone will just look under their seats, they'll find a FREE [INSERT SOMETHING YOU MAYBE DIDN'T WANT AT ALL HERE]! Awesome! So nice! Yup, throughout these few days people will be finding things from home - something they loved, something they used all the time, something they hated, something they totally forgot they even had. All sorts of cool stuff!

Well, they might not actually find it. Their neighbor might, or a complete stranger. And who knows where it could turn up? At the park, half-buried? In the Silent Hill zone, kept safe by a horrifying monster? Or hey, maybe in somebody's underwear drawer. Awkward. Better try to find your stuff, or find the owner of whatever weird crap you found. It could be something important.

► This log covers October 15th-October 19th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you somehow manage to die in this event, please let us know here, and also what the hell?

A!

Chris is at the bar at the moment, both because the coffee cart needs attending and because he really needs some time out of the house. There are way, way too many people--and wolves--in it for him to put up with constantly.

So instead he's sitting at the bar, drinking a cup of coffee and idly poking at his phone, and he looks up when Pell enters.

"Hey, Pell. What's up?"

Hey Chris.

[ The book doesn't really merit a bright smile, but Chris is getting one anyway because it's Chris. ]

Make me something not too bitter? Just coffee. I have something to show you.

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-16 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. By not-too-bitter you mean, sweet, or just not gonna make your face scrunch up?

[Because it's an important distinction, though he can do either with espresso and so goes to set that up brewing. But the last part of Pell's response definitely has his attention.]

Yeah? What is it?
pellameno: (in here)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The latter, with the lack of face scrunching.

[ Meanwhile he's reaching into his cloak and pulling out the journal, flipping to a page he's pretty sure will be familiar, as there's a sketch of one of the wendigo. ]

This must belong to you, or one of your friends. I figured it best to bring it to you.

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Got it.

[Easy enough, and Chris turns toward Pell to leave the espresso machine to do its thing. He's definitely not expecting to see the journal Pell's holding, or the illustration staring at him from the page.

Chris hadn't actually ever touched the journal, or even seen any of the pages; he's barely even heard any of their contents, dazed and a little out of it while Ashley had been reading it. But he still knows immediately what it must be, because that distinctive drawing combined with what he knows of the event going on so far leaves no other plausible options.]

W-Where'd you...

[It doesn't even matter, and so isn't the point, but it's something for him to say as he reaches out uncertainly to take the book if Pell lets him.]
pellameno: (simple touch)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-17 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
It was just on the ground on my way to the garden earlier. [ Pell lets him, even turning the book towards Chris. ]

This is something from your world, yes? I thought I should return it.
thechoiceisyours: (❄ ᴄᴀsᴛɪɴɢ ᴍᴇ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ sʜᴀᴅᴏᴡs)

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Y-Yeah, it's...

[Chris trails off, mostly because his attention is on the book, seemingly transfixed by the image of the wendigo for a few more seconds before he turns the page. More drawings, more notes, every page as he flips through, until he finally manages to turn his gaze back to Pell.]

Yeah. Thanks. I-It's um, it belonged to this stranger on the mountain that... He really helped us.
pellameno: (fidgeting)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
A stranger... I hope it's not a sign you might need it here again. There was some frightening stuff in there.

[ And then he draws back with a little wince. ] I'm sorry, I read parts of it.
thechoiceisyours: (★ ᴡɪᴛʜ sᴛᴇᴀᴅʏ ʜᴀɴᴅs)

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-17 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hopefully um, the gods aren't into repeats, so...

[So if that holds, it won't be anything they need. Besides, he's pretty sure they know everything important out of it, but he begins to flip through it again.]

No, it's um, it's okay. None of this stuff's secret at this point or whatever, so--

[And then he catches sight of something on the inside of the back cover; it's a family tree, written in pen, the handwriting matching that of the rest of the writing in the journal.

The stranger's name was Jack.

It's not an unusual name, or even one that means anything on its on, but it's who it belongs to that's what matters. Chris had never known the stranger's name--none of them did--and that would've been fine if it hadn't been for the fact that the man died because he was protecting Chris. The least Chris owed him was remembering his name, and now he finally knows what it is.

His vision blurs a little from tears, suddenly, and he gives a small, self-deprecating laugh; this is super pathetic, but at least Pell probably won't judge too hard.]
pellameno: (gentle)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-17 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ Forgetting for the moment that Chris shied away from his touch, Pell reaches up and wipes the tears from one of Chris' eyes. ]

What is it?
thechoiceisyours: (❄ ᴡʜʏ ɪs ʟɪғᴇ)

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-17 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Again he flinches, although it's out of pure surprise instead of any more underlying reason like it had been last time. He's just not used to anything more than an arm around the shoulder or a hug.

But he knows Pell's just trying to help, and right now the fact that it's a little weird is a lot less important than the intention. So despite the flinch he allows the gesture, though he does step back to put a little space between them again.

He also hesitates to explain, but at this point why not? It's not like he isn't already thinking about it, and it isn't really a secret.]

I-I um... T-The stranger, he died because he was protecting me; a wendigo just took his head off, right in front of me, a-and I didn't even know his name.

[But he holds out the journal again, showing the handwritten notes on the inside back cover.]
pellameno: (pic#9159690)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-17 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ Once again he isn't offended by the distance, just chides himself to be more careful with Chris. Again. He can't help his instincts. Pell pulls the book back, reading the inside cover and nodding. ]

...Jack. And now you know.

Does it make you feel better, having something of his?

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I-I guess so, yeah, mostly that just... I-I mean, it's not like I'll ever be able to tell him thank you, and I doubt he would've accepted it anyway--h-he was kind of a dick--but at least...

[At least he knows, and despite his joking assessment of Jack's personality he feels nothing but gratitude toward him. But this is one of the many things from that night that Chris hasn't had any chance to even begin to deal with, but maybe now he can start.]

T-Thanks. For um, bringing me the journal.
pellameno: (i wish that i could forget)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-17 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm around if you want to talk, you know. About that night... I figure it must be difficult to bring up with your housemates but trauma like that doesn't just go away. I hope the book will help you.

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-17 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

[It's quiet, but he means it just as much as last time; he appreciates the offer, and isn't immediately rejecting it. He still isn't a huge fan of the idea of telling anyone about his problems--no one here is having an easy time of things--but he also knows that Pell means the offer and it would be good for him to talk.

So maybe sometime he'll take him up on it.

But for now, he hears the hiss of the espresso machine, and it gives him something else to focus on; he turns toward it, taking the opportunity to finish drying his eyes on a sleeve as well.]

I'll um, have your coffee done in just a sec.
pellameno: (anticipating night falling)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-18 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Pell can only imagine what Chris has been through, in that it sounds worse than Hadriel. And having your partner here, then losing them again to an unknown fate... he'll be there when Chris decides it's alright to talk about it. Pell liked Ashley -- he hopes she makes it through.

The hiss of the machine is accompanied by the scent of good, strong coffee, and Pell shifts back in his seat to wait for it. ]

Don't rush. It's not like I'm paying you.

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Working on making the coffee gives him the time to take a few deep breaths and regain control of his emotions, though he's having to pointedly not spare any glances toward the journal. A minute or so later and he sets Pell's coffee on the bar, giving him a weak smile before turning back to the machine to make his own.]

It's okay. I um, actually kind of like the whole making coffee thing, though I wouldn't um... Want it as my job or anything.

[Then it'd just be work.]
pellameno: (I'm listening)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-21 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
"I can understand that. Gardening is more pleasant than farming ever was, though maybe that's just because we need it more here and I can share it with my friends." The deliveries to the UD house have been pretty regular since the garden really started producing.

Pell wraps his hands around the coffee cup, judging its temperature before he takes a sip. "You're good at this, though." And then he's thinking about what Chris actually wanted to do for work and it occurs to him-- "Hey, were you able to get the music and things from your phone?"
thechoiceisyours: (❄ ᴄᴀsᴛɪɴɢ ᴍᴇ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ sʜᴀᴅᴏᴡs)

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see it um... Being a lot more rewarding here.

[And he knows that everyone in his place, including him, appreciates that Pell has been supplying them with food. He manages a weak smile back in Pell's direction at the compliment before turning back to finish his own coffee, answering the question.]

Yeah, I got some stuff off of it. A bunch of music, mostly.

[He has more on there, but he's been saving the battery for now. And of course, besides the music he's also pulled off a few things that were more personal like photos and Emails that meant a lot to him.]
pellameno: (not looking at you)

[personal profile] pellameno 2016-10-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think I could hear some? I'll charge your phone a bit more.

[ He hasn't heard music in... it's been too long. And he's curious what it's like in Chris' world. ]
thechoiceisyours: (❄ ɪ ᴄᴀɴ'ᴛ ɢᴏ ᴏɴ)

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-10-30 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, definitely. I um, made like, a bundle you can actually download onto your phone here; I can set that up for you if you want?

[He figures it's easier to do it than walk Pell through the download process, and he doesn't mind. Especially if Pell's willing to charge his iPhone again.]
