Well, Hope and Delight are messing with the door again, but at least this time dragons aren't involved, right? This attempt goes a bit better - sure, no one gets sent home, but if everyone will just look under their seats, they'll find a FREE [INSERT SOMETHING YOU MAYBE DIDN'T WANT AT ALL HERE]! Awesome! So nice! Yup, throughout these few days people will be finding things from home - something they loved, something they used all the time, something they hated, something they totally forgot they even had. All sorts of cool stuff!
Well, they might not actually find it. Their neighbor might, or a complete stranger. And who knows where it could turn up? At the park, half-buried? In the Silent Hill zone, kept safe by a horrifying monster? Or hey, maybe in somebody's underwear drawer. Awkward. Better try to find your stuff, or find the owner of whatever weird crap you found. It could be something important.► This log covers October 15th-October 19th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you somehow manage to die in this event, please let us know here, and also what the hell?
A!
So instead he's sitting at the bar, drinking a cup of coffee and idly poking at his phone, and he looks up when Pell enters.
"Hey, Pell. What's up?"
no subject
[ The book doesn't really merit a bright smile, but Chris is getting one anyway because it's Chris. ]
Make me something not too bitter? Just coffee. I have something to show you.
no subject
[Because it's an important distinction, though he can do either with espresso and so goes to set that up brewing. But the last part of Pell's response definitely has his attention.]
Yeah? What is it?
no subject
[ Meanwhile he's reaching into his cloak and pulling out the journal, flipping to a page he's pretty sure will be familiar, as there's a sketch of one of the wendigo. ]
This must belong to you, or one of your friends. I figured it best to bring it to you.
no subject
[Easy enough, and Chris turns toward Pell to leave the espresso machine to do its thing. He's definitely not expecting to see the journal Pell's holding, or the illustration staring at him from the page.
Chris hadn't actually ever touched the journal, or even seen any of the pages; he's barely even heard any of their contents, dazed and a little out of it while Ashley had been reading it. But he still knows immediately what it must be, because that distinctive drawing combined with what he knows of the event going on so far leaves no other plausible options.]
W-Where'd you...
[It doesn't even matter, and so isn't the point, but it's something for him to say as he reaches out uncertainly to take the book if Pell lets him.]
no subject
This is something from your world, yes? I thought I should return it.
no subject
[Chris trails off, mostly because his attention is on the book, seemingly transfixed by the image of the wendigo for a few more seconds before he turns the page. More drawings, more notes, every page as he flips through, until he finally manages to turn his gaze back to Pell.]
Yeah. Thanks. I-It's um, it belonged to this stranger on the mountain that... He really helped us.
no subject
[ And then he draws back with a little wince. ] I'm sorry, I read parts of it.
no subject
[So if that holds, it won't be anything they need. Besides, he's pretty sure they know everything important out of it, but he begins to flip through it again.]
No, it's um, it's okay. None of this stuff's secret at this point or whatever, so--
[And then he catches sight of something on the inside of the back cover; it's a family tree, written in pen, the handwriting matching that of the rest of the writing in the journal.
The stranger's name was Jack.
It's not an unusual name, or even one that means anything on its on, but it's who it belongs to that's what matters. Chris had never known the stranger's name--none of them did--and that would've been fine if it hadn't been for the fact that the man died because he was protecting Chris. The least Chris owed him was remembering his name, and now he finally knows what it is.
His vision blurs a little from tears, suddenly, and he gives a small, self-deprecating laugh; this is super pathetic, but at least Pell probably won't judge too hard.]
no subject
What is it?
no subject
But he knows Pell's just trying to help, and right now the fact that it's a little weird is a lot less important than the intention. So despite the flinch he allows the gesture, though he does step back to put a little space between them again.
He also hesitates to explain, but at this point why not? It's not like he isn't already thinking about it, and it isn't really a secret.]
I-I um... T-The stranger, he died because he was protecting me; a wendigo just took his head off, right in front of me, a-and I didn't even know his name.
[But he holds out the journal again, showing the handwritten notes on the inside back cover.]
no subject
...Jack. And now you know.
Does it make you feel better, having something of his?
no subject
[At least he knows, and despite his joking assessment of Jack's personality he feels nothing but gratitude toward him. But this is one of the many things from that night that Chris hasn't had any chance to even begin to deal with, but maybe now he can start.]
T-Thanks. For um, bringing me the journal.

no subject
[It's quiet, but he means it just as much as last time; he appreciates the offer, and isn't immediately rejecting it. He still isn't a huge fan of the idea of telling anyone about his problems--no one here is having an easy time of things--but he also knows that Pell means the offer and it would be good for him to talk.
So maybe sometime he'll take him up on it.
But for now, he hears the hiss of the espresso machine, and it gives him something else to focus on; he turns toward it, taking the opportunity to finish drying his eyes on a sleeve as well.]
I'll um, have your coffee done in just a sec.
no subject
The hiss of the machine is accompanied by the scent of good, strong coffee, and Pell shifts back in his seat to wait for it. ]
Don't rush. It's not like I'm paying you.
no subject
It's okay. I um, actually kind of like the whole making coffee thing, though I wouldn't um... Want it as my job or anything.
[Then it'd just be work.]
no subject
Pell wraps his hands around the coffee cup, judging its temperature before he takes a sip. "You're good at this, though." And then he's thinking about what Chris actually wanted to do for work and it occurs to him-- "Hey, were you able to get the music and things from your phone?"
no subject
[And he knows that everyone in his place, including him, appreciates that Pell has been supplying them with food. He manages a weak smile back in Pell's direction at the compliment before turning back to finish his own coffee, answering the question.]
Yeah, I got some stuff off of it. A bunch of music, mostly.
[He has more on there, but he's been saving the battery for now. And of course, besides the music he's also pulled off a few things that were more personal like photos and Emails that meant a lot to him.]
no subject
[ He hasn't heard music in... it's been too long. And he's curious what it's like in Chris' world. ]
no subject
[He figures it's easier to do it than walk Pell through the download process, and he doesn't mind. Especially if Pell's willing to charge his iPhone again.]
