Event Log: Keepsakes

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Keepsakes event!
Where: All around the city
When: October 15th-October 19th
Warnings: A bunch of random crap.

Well, Hope and Delight are messing with the door again, but at least this time dragons aren't involved, right? This attempt goes a bit better - sure, no one gets sent home, but if everyone will just look under their seats, they'll find a FREE [INSERT SOMETHING YOU MAYBE DIDN'T WANT AT ALL HERE]! Awesome! So nice! Yup, throughout these few days people will be finding things from home - something they loved, something they used all the time, something they hated, something they totally forgot they even had. All sorts of cool stuff!

Well, they might not actually find it. Their neighbor might, or a complete stranger. And who knows where it could turn up? At the park, half-buried? In the Silent Hill zone, kept safe by a horrifying monster? Or hey, maybe in somebody's underwear drawer. Awkward. Better try to find your stuff, or find the owner of whatever weird crap you found. It could be something important.

► This log covers October 15th-October 19th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you somehow manage to die in this event, please let us know here, and also what the hell?

sewing shop

What she found today is the opposite of upsetting, at least for her. The comb is very pretty, very sturdy, and very nice to use. In fact, she's combing her hair when Pell comes into the shop.

"Hey, Pell," she says with a smile -- prettying up a little always puts her in a good mood, especially after finding a severed hand in her and Matt's bed the other day. (That kind of thing lingers, eugh.) "Look what I found when I got here this morning." She holds out the comb for him to see.

"Morning, Emily. What is it?" He steps forward with a smile, which disappears when he sees what she holds in her hands. It can't be.

He recalls, every night for as long as he was human before leaving the safety of his home, his sister brushing his hair top to bottom, ends to center, working out the kinks of his braids and the dust of the day and any tangles that may have snuck in. Polishing his hair until it shined, and he had something to preen over in that run down farmhouse. And she would laugh and call him a peacock but do the same the next night, as they chatted and shared each other's company. Mima's smile may as well have been reflected at him in the silvery back of the brush.

"....my sister's--"

Oh shit. That is not the reaction she expected. Or the words she expected. She should've known this belonged to someone else, what with all the weird shit turning up.

"Oh my god. Pell." Emily stands, cradling the brush in her hands. She looks down at it for a moment and then goes up to him, holding the brush out for him to take. Her voice is soft as she says, "It's beautiful."

Pell takes the thing, the symbol of home, of his humanity, and smiles gently. "It was a family keepsake. Mima got it, as the girl, but I always kept my hair the longest. Hers was like yours, actually."

He turns it over in his hands and blinks away the sudden moistness in his eyes. First Flick, then Orien's seeds, now this. A deep breath, and he twirls a finger at Emily. Such a thing isn't just to be used on your own. "Turn around. I'll finish. I could braid it as well, if you wanted, like I used to do hers."

Mima. Emily likes how that sounds, likes being compared to someone clearly so important to Pell. She touches her hair -- now longer, after seven, eight months without even a trim -- then frowns a little until the offer really sinks in. She hasn't had anyone do her hair in so long. It'd be nice for a new friend to do it, nicer still that he'd use a family heirloom, that he'd share that with her.

"That'd be great." She smiles and complies, crossing to take her seat again, this time with her back to Pell. "I don't do a lot with it here, just a quick ponytail when it starts to get in the way."

He'd trim her hair for her if she wanted -- his is getting close to needing it, too, so long that he just always keeps it back and out of the way now. But for now he follows Emily to the chair and takes place behind her, running his fingers through her hair before turning the brush to finish the job she started. His strokes are gentle but firm, easing out any tangles that might be there from the bottom.

"I think I know what I'd like to do. We can pretend there's an occasion." Once her hair is straight and shining from the brushing, he sets it down on the table and gathers a handful from her temple, starting one side of a waterfall braid. "Have you found anything of your own from home? Things are showing up everywhere."

That might be nice. Pell is good at this. She'd trust him to give her a good haircut. Even just this is relaxing, the feel of the brush against her scalp, his fingers in her hair.

"Yeah, actually." There's her bag with the lingerie, and then-- "One of my friends found my kimono. My parents had it made for me to wear for coming of age day." And actually-- "We're thinking about celebrating it here, now that I have my kimono. You could do my hair for that if we do it."

His hands are steady and sure, moving with the skill of someone who's done this many times before. "I'd love to. You should celebrate it, even here. We need good things -- What's a kimono look like?" He's unfamiliar with the name, though he's extrapolated that it's special clothing. Maybe a dress? "Did we miss your birthday?"

"I'll defiintely keep you posted."

And in response to the question about the kimono, she reaches for a nearby notebook and pencil and sketches it out, a furisode. While she sketches, she tackles the next question." The actual date, yeah, but the ceremony is a holiday in Japan. It's the second Monday in January for everyone who turned twenty between April 2nd and April 1st, so we haven't missed that."

When the sketch is complete enough, she holds it up for him to see.

"That's a ways away, then. I wonder if we'll all still be here."

He finishes one braid and starts on the other side as she sketches, until she holds the pad up. "It's beautiful," he comments, hands stilling as he looks at the sketch. "What color is yours?"

"We probably will." Emily has lost hope of going home -- and more importantly, she likes what she and her friends have here. She likes having Hannah and Beth around, likes that everyone is alive. Not necessarily well, but alive is a start.

"Mine's mostly purple, with flowers in the fabric, but not like a full pattern. It's just in parts of it. There's a lot of white and pink to it too." Setting down her sketch pad, she adds, "I can show it to you next time you're over."
