The revival of Tranquility on December 27th marks a vast - if temporary, and actually completely fake - change to the city. Upon awakening that morning, the inhabitants of Hadriel will find the city changed from its usual broken-down dour cave self into a sparkling, clean, delightful island city. Instead of being surrounded by hard stone walls, the city is surrounded by warm ocean waters and soft white sand beaches.
Gentle waves lap at the shore, the sky overhead is perfect, wide and open. The spires have been replaced by shining skyscrapers, the roads are clear of rubble and paved neatly. The stores are quaint, windows no longer broken, and the items inside have changed too. Instead of simple canned goods and strange clothing, you might find delicate pastries, cool drinks, fresh fruit, and flowy summer clothes to match the city. How nice! How calming, really. Didn't everyone need a vacation? So throw on some flip-flops, grab one of the mopeds that have been provided, and enjoy yourselves!
As the days go on, though, you might notice one or two odd things. Maybe the pretty sun hat you picked up looked, for just a moment, like a grubby old baseball cap instead. Maybe that beach ball is a little heavier than it should be. Maybe the shining wall of that skyscraper feels more like stone than glass. Maybe - just for an instant - the sky above was solid rock instead of the gentle, calming hues of the sunset.
While there is a mild compulsion toward calmness and tranquility, towards accepting the city for exactly what it seems to be, that can be ignored - and the illusion can be broken, if you choose to try. But do you really want to? Isn't that croissant much nicer than yet another can of beans? Wouldn't you rather relax at the beach than run around, trying to convince all your friends that this is just the gods getting inside their heads again in an even more creepy and all-encompassing way than usual?
Come on. Don't be a buzzkill.► This log covers December 27th-January 7th.

Rey | OTA
None of this is real. At least, not the aesthetics. There isn't a sky hanging overhead, neither is there a vast ocean surrounding a coastal city. Rey knows that last part when she had attempted to swim her way out, only to find an invisible wall preventing her from going much farther.
Her hair and clothes are still soaking wet when she enters the shop, deciding to peruse the new selection. The produce is certainly different this time, as are the sets of clothes, hanging or neatly folded over shelves. Some might be a little too colorful for her tastes.
But, even then, she stops at the dresses lined up along the walls by hangers. Each of them just as vibrant in shade as the many other apparel here. Rey runs her fingers through the fabric, feeling the softness and its authenticity. The one in particular fetching her interest is a sleeveless red dress of cream-colored floral patterns, low hanging in the front, with the side slitting up to the thigh.
As anyone can expect, dresses and showy patterns don't really match her style. In fact, Rey doesn't have what you could call a 'style', unless one counted her usual tank tops and cargo pants as a style.
And maybe there are some who certainly could.
Still, it doesn't hurt to leave something to the imagination, as one might find their way to her at the end of a watery trail...
II. Night Beach
It has been a long time.
With the sound of crashing waves in her ears, the gritty sand beneath her, and the light chill carried in the breeze, Rey lays on the shorelines, spread eagle and not nearly as relaxed as she appears. Watching the sky turn from the radiant painted hues across the cirrus clouds to a twinkling blackness at the fading hours. Beer bottles surround her, along with the packages of sweet bread that she had already consumed.
The last she had done this, she wasn't alone. Her brother was at her side, and they talked about many things. Things that meant a lot to her now. Her chest aches when she remembers, and instead of the whistling of wind, she hears his voice. Instead of an empty heaven, she sees the way the moon had lit up the contours of his face, and something about him was so sad then. Whether it's the memory or the amount of drinking she's been doing, she can't help but feel a sort of sadness, too.
Her head spinning from the buzz of alcohol, she raises one hand up to the sky. Peers at the alien stars between her fingers.
"You're not up there..." Rey says aloud under a quiet, shaky mutter, to no one who would ever give her the answer she wants.
shops!
Oh. Oh, okay. Rey is inside. Dripping wet, even!
It's a god damned miracle she does not pass out on the floor, all things considered.
Alphys stands, staring Rey's direction for a few seconds before she finally decides to actually speak to the other woman as oppose to just running away to die somewhere. "Are you, uhm, l-looking for, uh, something dry? I mean, uhm, it looks like it'd look nice. Uh. On y-you. If you wanted to wear it? Or not, uh, it's u-up to you!"
She is incredibly smooth.

Rey's eyes dart towards the owner of that shaky voice before they shift back to the dress in her hand. For some reason, Alphys looks just as starstruck as she did when they first met, or maybe that's just how she always is.
"Thank you," she just blurts instinctively, if only to try and help put Alphys' apparent tension at ease. "Am thinking of picking out something like this for someone else. Think she'd look better in these than..." She pauses. "Well, she'd look better."
It doesn't matter to Rey what Bianca wears, but she likes flashy, pretty things and Rey likes flashy and pretty things on her. Never thought to be the one to wear them herself. Outside of one special occasion, that is. But that was years ago and for an occasion. It was nice.
no subject
Instead, she talks, which is guaranteed to make her look more like a complete idiot.
"I think t-they would look nice on you." Oh god, why did she say that. Out loud even. Fuck. "I mean, uhm, if, y-you wanted, but uh, I'm sure this other person would, uhm, also l-look nice too! Are they... uh, h-here?" She kicks herself a little bit more in her head for that one, buuut it's out there now, so there's no taking that back, and now they're having an Actual Conversation She Can't Back Out Of. Goodness. Why is she so hopeless.
no subject
Rey can't help but wonder if they're all like that, or if Alphys just has a condition. But then, leave that assumption up to someone with minimal social skills, let alone social skills that help you talk to someone with chronic anxiety.
"Um, yes. We met here, actually."
no subject
"Oh! That's, uhm, t-that's so sweet." It does sound cute, getting thrown into another world and meeting someone... that almost makes this place sound like a magical destiny type world, as oppose to the, uh, mess it really is. It'd be a nice thing to hold onto at least. "Maybe, uhm, if you find something that suits her, y-you can bring it to her later to show you were thinking about her!"
At least, that's what Alphys would do. If she had the nerve. "Or, uhm, I mean, you could wear it too, or... y-you could get, uh, matching stuff, maybe?"
no subject
"Maybe." Her mouth twists into an uncertain look as she glances to the assorted dresses. "Know anything that'd match a small, dark, and pretty type? Never got into this shopping thing. Or clothes. Though, doubt you could call this 'shopping' since we're not technically buying anything. Guess that makes us more like charity cases or something."
This is probably the most Rey has ever rambled about anything. Treading new territory like this does that.
no subject
"Well, uhm, I'm not uh, m-much the shopping type myself. Well, I mean, I like clothes and that sort of thing, but there's never really an, uh, o-opportunity to wear anything nice, you know? But, uh, maybe t-think about the sort of stuff she, uh, usually wears? Or, uhm, maybe something that would compliment her f-features, like her hair or her eyes?" I mean, that's how anime girls do it, right? They all have associated color schemes?? That'll work in real life. Yes.
no subject
"Mm," she muses, picking out a deep red dress that shines in the light. Floral patterns, like many of the designs in this shop, also give off a reflective look. "She has dark hair and eyes. Red goes good with black, right?"
Bianca would like red. Blood is red. And Bianca has an appreciation for blood, it seems.
no subject
"But, uh, I'm sure she'd a-appreciate just you thinking of her." She adds hastily. "I mean, uhm, I know it always feels nice when p-people just, get you stuff because they're t-thinking about you. Especially since, uh, none of this costs anything, so, e-even if she doesn't like it, there's uh, no real consequence, right?"
a
Piper has been browsing for a while. While she preferred the functionality of her own outfit, well... wouldn't hurt to pick something else out given the weather. She's currently sporting a pair of iridescent sunglasses which she peeks over at to glace at the other shopper in the store and - oh, it's Nick's roommate.
She'd met the woman before, but it was brief and she didn't know much about her yet, didn't know her at all really. It wouldn't hurt to try and fix that... for reasons that are Very Pure and not at all nosing into her friend's business.
"Have a good swim or are you just going for a certain look?"
no subject
Plus it isn't like she has any reason to switch mental gears, when the one approaching her is someone Nick calls a friend. And Piper seems harmless enough. Mostly.
Lowering the shirt onto the piles of folded clothes, her eyes blink down at the puddle of water gathering at her feet from standing there for too long.
"Why not both?" Rey says with a casual shrug.
no subject
Arms crossed, she leans slightly against a counter. "Seems like we've all been taking advantage of the weather. Didn't think this place was even capable of having weather being in a cave and all."
Does it make sense? No. Does that bother her? Not really.
no subject
"It really isn't," she says as she finishes up drying her hair. Thank god it's short and low maintenance. "Because it isn't real."
This much she learned from her little 'swim'.
