Honestly, it's probably pure luck that a fire hasn't broken out sooner. All you people with your cooking and your magical fire powers and your explosives, you know? It shouldn't be a surprise that in a city with no fire alarms something will eventually get, well, a little too hot. It's only amazing that this is the first time.
So, are you one of the lucky ones? If you live on the south side of the city, in the houses that recently arrived, you'll probably be fine. You can go chill at the hot springs while everyone else desperately tries to save their homes and shops. Not your problem, right?
Or maybe you're a slightly better person than that, and you head right in to help the injured and stop the fire. Nice!
If you're on the north side of the city, things are going to be a little more urgent. Sure,
you could go chill at the hot springs too, but your house might burn down, or your favorite shop, or one of the nicer landmarks that you've gotten attached to. Maybe you should keep an eye on things - protect your own stuff, save yourself and your friends and pets, and then lend a hand to those in need. All you've got is each other!► This log covers September 14th-17th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well

Drake Holloway | OTA and closed
Despite only training for this the one day, Drake isn't afraid of the fire. He's a little afraid of the buildings coming down around them, but knows that most of the crew is strong and fast -- hopefully enough that it won't be an issue. He puts on his protective gear and looks to where he's needed most. The tanker trucks are already being manned but there are people trapped on the upper floors of the spires, maybe in the houses. So there. He starts there.
Anyone who needs rescue can hear him calling out through the smoke, searching for the apartments that had people waving in the windows. He can also be found outside on the front lines, gathering his strength between trips.
[ spire 1; closed to Lup ]
Drake has officially pushed himself too far. He's gone in four times after people at the top of the spire, and not only is the structure of the building becoming unstable as the flames creep upwards, the smoke has gotten very thick. That's what gets him. Not the heat, not a weak floor, but the smoke. He coughs harshly even behind the fabric meant to protect him from the worst of the smoke, crouches down and squints through it. His eyes are stinging, and he's feeling decidedly weak and dizzy.
Finally the world fades out and he crumples to the floor of the hallway. It's only a matter of time before the fire catches up to him now and he's good and trapped. If he wakes up again.
People outside may realize that he should have been back by now....
[ the clinic; OTA ]
After being rescued himself, Drake realizes he needs a break for the day. But "break" doesn't really mean break, it means "switching to a less dangerous job." Instead of running into burning buildings he helps ferry the injured between the first aid setup on the front lines and the clinic itself. He rallies to carry those who can't walk, until he wears himself down enough that he needs to stop and sit in the clinic waiting area, sweaty and streaked with soot.
the clinic
she's briefly distracted by the sight of one of the rescue workers taking a seat in the waiting area, clearly exhausted]
Hey. You need anything? Cup of water, washcloth, something else?
Re: the clinic
Hey. If you can spare both those things, I'll take 'em.
Re: the clinic
Got it. Be right back. [leaves and returns with the cup of water and a damp washcloth] You need anything else? First aid, someone to talk to, whatever?

Clinic
She takes a seat next to Drake, offering him a glass of water with one hand and a towel with the other. "You have to rest, or you won't be any help to anyone."
Re: Clinic
"I figured that out," he admits quietly, wiping some of the soot off his face before taking a drink. "Thank you."
no subject
"it's pretty bad out there." she's never seen anything quite like it. "It'll burn itself out, won''t it?
no subject
"It'll burn through the whole city first, things are too close together. We need to fight it overnight."
no subject
Cashmere sighs. "So either people work through the night risk their lives, or everything burns down. Great."
no subject
And yeah. It looks like they're going to have to work through the night but not him, he's no use anymore. He needs some food and rest and will be back at it tomorrow. "At least we got everyone out. No more running into the burning buildings."

clinic
Thus far, he hasn't come across any dead bodies, either. That's a bonus.
He sits down next to Drake with a groan, tossing him a granola bar.
"Eat before you pass out, dude."
no subject
"Huh? Oh, thanks." His voice is rough, because smoke inhalation is a bitch. But he tears the wrapper open and takes a bite, looking Ephemera over. His friend's armor is covered in soot but looks undamaged, even the paint underneath. Drake thinks, anyway, it's hard to tell without washing it off.
"That wasn't much like the training."
no subject
Doesn't look too good, either. Covered in soot from head to toe, shiny burns on his hands. And he didn't have any armor. No one did. They just went in.
It's a job, Ephemera knows, and it was necessary, but he doesn't have to like it. People should have good gear. He sets his helmet aside, keeping an eye on Drake. Just in case.
"Nah. But we're still here. And you're feeling the drop."
The dead drop, after all the adrenaline wears off.
"It'll pass," he adds. "But eat. Drink some water. You'll thank me later."
no subject
He takes a bite of the bar and leans back in his chair, looking around at the crowded clinic. They shouldn't be taking up space if they don't need help, he just. Stuck around after bringing the last patient in.
"You wanna go back to my place?"
no subject
Not everyone else can, or should.
He shrugs. A shower sounds amazing and he doesn't like being alone after a fight. Not when he has friends, at least. "Yeah. You good?"
no subject
"...good might be overstating it. But I can take care of this shit at home, they're really busy. I just needed a minute." He flexes his free hand, feeling the sting of the burns. It's not so bad. And he heals crazy fast, it's not worth wasting clinic time and resources when the blisters will be down tomorrow.
"Let's go clean up."
It's an effort to push back to his feet but he manages, rolling tired shoulders. Definitely overdid it, yup.

rescue squad;
After making sure that her only friend located near the blaze was safe back at Lup's new digs on the southern end of the caves, the elf had returned to the scene of the fire to see if there was anything she could possibly do to help.
The short answer was no. Her magic was mostly fire-based, generally all for offensive purposes. It was hard to work any of her spells into ways that could help put out or contain or do anything regarding the spreading flames that were quickly overtaking the city. Of course there were small tasks she could take up, help usher people into the clinics or keep them from going into the buildings for forgotten mementos, but it seemed like the whole city was coming together to volunteer. She'd honestly feel much better getting back home to Taako and Lucretia, to keep them safe and far away from this mess.
But it's just as she turns to put distance between herself and the flames, Lup hears whispers of a member of the fire brigade that has yet to return after running into a spire to save whoever else was left inside. Lup barely has the chance to make up her mind before she's rushing in, heading for the stairs, a hand pressed over her mouth to try and minimize how much smoke she'd inhale. Thankfully Drake didn't get too far inside without passing out, Lup finds him with ease.
She drops to her knees and immediately slaps at his face, a quick attempt to get him conscious again. If this doesn't work, she'll drag him herself. "Hey! Can you hear me?"
Re: rescue squad;
"Yeah." His voice is a wreck and speaking sends him into a coughing fit. But trouble or not, he's not worried about himself, as he gathers strength to push himself back up. "We have to check upstairs. Before the whole thing comes down."
no subject
Lup's tone is firm. So far their conversations have been flirty and fun, but Drake's about to learn about just how stubborn this elf can be. "We are getting you out of here and letting someone else take care of this. You can't play the big damn hero if you're fucking dead."
no subject
"Okay," he croaks. "Okay, let's get out."
It takes him a moment to get his bearings, squinting through the smoke, but he turns back the way they came. "Is it still clear down there?"
no subject
"So far, yeah. I know the way. C'mon, doofus, just lean on me." Lup's a little thin and wispy herself, but she grits her teeth and accepts his weight without complaint. Levitate is always an option, but with the need to keep as low as they can to stay out of the smoke, she's cautious to set Drake flying.
Lup leads the way, navigating carefully down the stairs. "Just hold on. Take it one step at a time."
no subject
Luckily for both of them he needs to lean more for balance than support, so he isn't terribly heavy despite his bulk. He's feeling heavy-limbed and light-headed, and his breathing is rough enough he doesn't spare the air to refute her calling him a doofus. Fact is, he sort of is for going back in when he was so exhausted and compromised. Hopefully the last sweep wasn't necessary, because this spire isn't going to last long once they're out.
He grips Lup's shoulder and paces his steps to hers, and though the stairs creak threateningly beneath their combined weight they make it back out -- Drake doesn't let go just yet, not sure how the fire spell works and not feeling steady enough to be on his own. The clearer air isn't helping much considering the amount of smoke he already inhaled. It'll take some time.
"...thanks, Lup." A rough coughing fit is his payment for speaking, and he turns his head away from her and buries his face in the crook of his elbow to weather it. Because manners. "I owe you a dozen."
