Honestly, it's probably pure luck that a fire hasn't broken out sooner. All you people with your cooking and your magical fire powers and your explosives, you know? It shouldn't be a surprise that in a city with no fire alarms something will eventually get, well, a little too hot. It's only amazing that this is the first time.

So, are you one of the lucky ones? If you live on the south side of the city, in the houses that recently arrived, you'll probably be fine. You can go chill at the hot springs while everyone else desperately tries to save their homes and shops. Not your problem, right?
Or maybe you're a slightly better person than that, and you head right in to help the injured and stop the fire. Nice!

If you're on the north side of the city, things are going to be a little more urgent. Sure,
you could go chill at the hot springs too, but your house might burn down, or your favorite shop, or one of the nicer landmarks that you've gotten attached to. Maybe you should keep an eye on things - protect your own stuff, save yourself and your friends and pets, and then lend a hand to those in need. All you've got is each other!

• fleeing the fire (closed to drake)

[She sees the flames before they reach the spire, long enough to pack a bag with clothes and her most important notes, but not nearly long enough to evacuate before smoke starts to drift up the stairs and under her front door. The good thing is smoke rises, so breathing will get easier rather than harder as she descends from the floor her apartment is on. The bad thing is that the fire itself is down there and also rising, so there is no guarantee that she will make it out alive.

She takes a clean shirt, runs it under the tap, and ties it over her nose and mouth. She throws on her backpack after checking it one last time to be sure she has everything she wants to save. Finally, she grabs Sandy and heads out into the hallway.

They're fine for the first few landings, but then the heat picks up, waves of it hitting both human and fennec, and the roar of the flames grows louder. It's the latter which startles Sandy so much that she squirms in Brennan's arms. She's strong despite her size, and soon her survival instinct has her darting back upstairs to her new home.

For all that Brennan knows she needs to leave as soon as possible, she cannot leave Sandy behind. She and the fox have bonded too much for her to lose her now, so she turns around, shouting up after her, away from the exit and the safety is offers her.

[Brennan and Sandy are mostly unscathed, with smudges of soot here and there and the smell of smoke clinging to them. At least now Sandy has the instinct to stay in Brennan's arms, trembling, and whining a little. There are some burns on Brennan's arms, but nothing that needs immediate attention. Her priority is to fimd somewhere to stay while the Fire Brigade deals with the blaze.

Sweets already has a house guest, but he also has a couch. Brennan is perfectly fine with sleeping on his couch if he agrees to letting her stay for a while. Spire 2 is far enough out that she is fairly confident the fire won't spread that far. If it does... well, there's always the other side of the city.

She is a little winded when she arrives at Sweets's door, thanks to the smoke in Spire 1 and, well, the fact that her bullding is on fire. It will pass soon, though. She already feels much better. She reaches out to knock firmly on the door, quietly reassuring Sandy that they're safe now.]

[Now that she's settled, Brennan goes to the clinic to receive treatment for her burns.]

Hello. I am here as a patient. Is there anyone available? I can wait. My burns are not a priority.

[They are only first degree burns. She can run cold water over them while she waits.]

[By the time Brennan reaches Spire 2, Lance has noticed the whole fire issue and is in the middle of pulling on some shoes; although he doubts he'd be too helpful with whatever response there is the fire itself, he can definitely be useful at the Clinic and so is planning to head that way.

But the knock at his door comes just before he reaches it to open it himself, and gives him pause a moment in surprise. But then he goes ahead and opens it, curious and concerned at once, and far more the latter then the former when he sees who it is.]

Are you okay?

[He asks it quickly, stepping aside at the same time so she has room to enter, and shutting the door behind her; she probably wants to put down the fox, and he suddenly has a much more pressing priority to deal with than going to the Clinic.]

[ Their home is far enough away from the fire that she doesn't know about the situation until she hears about it from someone else. The Inquisitor, who hadn't been at the second spire anyway, looks first toward the huge, mostly-empty apartment that she shares with a spirit and a dog. There are some things there that she wouldn't like to lose, but the other 'residents' are more important. As such, she glances down at the hound at her side (he says and does nothing in response) before sending a message to Cole.

Apparently, this fire is closer to the North side of the city than anything, so their place would likely avoid it... with any luck. Her jaw tightens as she allows herself to imagine a wildfire in Hadriel, where it's more likely to be alive than a normal blaze. Her heart flutters briefly before she heads off for that part of town, dog bounding along beside her.

The scene is fairly chaotic. Apparently, some brigade of fire fighters has been called and is addressing the situation, but the flames are still eating through this piece of the city. Her bow is on her back, but there's no need for it unless a monster or something similar is causing the fire.

Against her will, she sees brief flashes of a woman who wielded - wields - fire, who used that power to put Cecily out of her misery when she'd been possessed. Startled at this unbidden memory, the Inquisitor stumbles, catching her balance, but gradually turning white as a sheet.

Calm down. That was a long time ago. Still, though, she can feel whispers of the pain of that time, and the inferno reflected in wide, dark eyes has her shiver. ]

... How did this start? [ She brings herself to ask of someone passing by in an attempt to pull herself together. ]

[Cole has been trying to help since he first felt the fear. There isn't much he can do to stop the blaze by himself, but there always seems to be a full bucket nearby, a clear space to sit down and rest, thing the healers need always right on hand. At first he doesn't even notice that he has a message from Cecily, but once he does he opts for finding her instead of responding.

She doesn't look good. That only makes him worry even more. At least he's polite enough to appear in front of her this time.]

September 14th - 17th: Clinic

[The last time Rosen faced the possibility of death by flame had been the night he had to make a decision between shooting to kill or letting himself and a dozen others die in a burning building. This is far from a pleasant memory, and as such Rosen seems more touchy and irritated than seems to make sense for a fire-emergency. He's been fortunate that his apartment is far from the blaze, but he's still sure to be on call at the clinic for those who might not be so fortunate.

However if you do talk to him, whether clinic staff or a patient, you may find he's more blunt and short with his responses than normal]

( Kate's been working... well, more tirelessly than usual. There's something even frantic about her need to flit from place to place, helping those fighting the fire as much as she does those who are healing the sick. She drags their slowly depleting stash of burn ointment with her whenever she goes out and pulls flammable items over to the south.

They're going to get through this. She did not come this far for fire to be their undoing. Not when she's so used to it.

It's the moment between her coming back and picking up more ointment that she sees Rosen, and, for a moment, she exhales. )

Escaping Spire 1

[Whether it was the thick smell of smoke that woke him or the pain starting in his chest from how difficult it has become to breathe, by the time Delmar wakes, his room and, as he is soon to discover, the rest of his apartment are doused in a sickly haze of ashy gray. He blinks against it but his eyes sting and his inability to get a deep, fresh breath of air makes the process of trying to stumble out of bed quickly all the more difficult.

He grabs for his scarf, using it to try and cover his mouth as a meager filter from the smoke and then he clumsily shrugs on his coat and heads for the door, not even stopping to get his shoes. To be honest he's not even sure he'd be able to find them now.

Delmar yanks open the door to leave his bedroom when he abruptly stops, grabs Beauregard, his teddy-bear with a lampshade hat that he's had since the strange furniture appeared in the cave, and then he wastes no more time in getting out of his apartment.

By the time he's free of the first spire he's wheezing badly, bear clutched to his chest with one hand and other hand still holding the silk scarf over his mouth. He only hopes he's heading in the right direction away from the flames]

Around town, First and Second day of the Event

[Once he's gotten himself to the south side of Hadriel Delmar is dizzy so he finds a random corner and sits himself down with Beauregard in his lap and his head drooped over as if on the verge of sleep. He's almost too groggy and disoriented to even be worried. Or to be upset that his favorite book and James' camera are still back in his apartment.

Right now he just wants to sleep.]

[Ephemera holds an armored hand out, but doesn't touch the man. His HUD is registering possible injuries, though it isn't calibrated to fire damage. Smoke inhalation is definitely a thing, though. Especially since the man seems to be heading not to the clinic but into the thick of the fire.]

[Spire 1 - Sept. 14th]
[Guess who's asleep through all the phone messages and calls to the Guard while the city is burning? It's Captain Lazypants von Dummkopf, napping in the middle of the day in his 8th floor apartment. It's the smell of smoke that finally rouses him, which is quickly filling the room. He wakes, coughing and sputtering, and is expecting to see something happening in the kitchen. Instead, the smoke is coming from under his front door, and when he opens to inspect the problem, he has to quickly shut it. Thankfully, the fire hasn't come that high yet, but the smoke filling the exit ways is making it hard to leave. He throws open all of the windows and leans out of one, hoping to see someone nearby. This is bad.]

Wh-What the hell?! I can't get out of here!

[That's when he thinks to check his phone, and see all of the messages. Whoops.]

[Duration of event - those who need help]
[To Prussia's credit, once he's motivated, he's a force to be reckoned with. He's out to help whoever and whatever he can, and is fearless in his rescues. If you need help, he'll be there and will get you to the clinic if he can as well. Someone might need to convince him into doing the same, however. He doesn't recover like he used to, and all this smoke inhalation is starting to wipe him out. As usual, he tries to play it off like he's fine. Never better! Just a little hazard of the job.]

C'mon, I'm fine. We're all breathin' smoke. Now get outta here before this place gets any more dangerous, okay?

Spire 1.

[Like before, Ravine manifests by the window, perched weightlessly on the sill. If it was closed before, it's open now. She could have taken the door, but... You know, details and such -- she doesn't care about those.

[The fire doesn't harm her, either way. One would need to be alive to burn to death, after all. Others don't have that luxury.]

Not with that attitude, you can't.

[Ravine, come on. Now is not the time.]

Rydia | Open

[Not exactly escaping fire...]

There are few things that can cause Rydia to shut down almost completely, finding herself once more in the middle of a fire that seems to engulf the whole city seems to be one of those. Caught by the flames on her way to the library the woman simply tried to turn around and run back to her apartment- just to find her legs not cooperating. The next thing she knew? She was on the floor, feeling almost paralyzed by fear, while fire kept moving in her direction.

"Just a lie... just a lie..."

Of all things the Gods (because it must be them!) did why did they have to pick a giant fire? The summoner shivered on the ground, crawling on the dirt and hiding her face against her legs, in theory Rydia'd still have all the time to run away and seek a safer place but she was just... there while memories she considered long abandoned in the past kept flooding back. It wasn't enough encountering her mother again, was it? This city also had to remind her how everyone died, right?

"I hate this... I hate this..."

Not the best moment for Rydia, not at all.

[Assuming that someone took her to safety...]

Rydia isn't leaving the side of the river for now, she spent hours with her feet in the water ready to jump in if needed- not the brightest plan considering she never learnt how to swim but having a way out helped her keep control. The raging sounds of fire, the bright light she could still see in the distance- no, this wasn't going to be a good day.

[Preventing death is just... not what Kravitz does. In fact, it stands against everything he represents. The natural flow of life, and what comes after. Stability. Order. But that...that is not what's happening in this place. These "gods" are making a mockery of everything the Raven Queen has taught him. Kravitz can't stand for it, and he won't stand for this. God induced or otherwise, it doesn't really matter in his mind.

The more people die and get revived, the more those fucked up wannabe necromancers win. (And, well, truth be told, there is now a handful of people Kravitz would strongly prefer didn't die. So, perhaps he cannot afford to be impartial. Not anymore.)

It's with all this in mind that Kravitz portals between locations, checking any areas up in flames for trapped folks. Rydia is the first he comes across.]

Quickly, up on your feet. Allow me to help you.

Although Pell's got the power to summon fire, he unfortunately doesn't have any experience putting them out. And he's not strong enough to handle a hose or carry someone out of a burning building... but he can heal. He has the feeling there'll be a lot of that needed, as reports of people being trapped in the spires spread. The firefighting is best left to those who have trained for it but he's right there, examining everyone being carried out for burns and checking their breathing. Or he might be scolding a firefighter who's inhaled too much smoke, trying to convince them not to go back in. Either way he's right in the middle of things, occasionally running back and forth between the clinic and front of the fire for more supplies, as others fight to keep it from spreading. He'll work himself to exhaustion and then work some more, because it's needed right now.

Cal is not going to lie to himself about this--he is concerned. For all that he'd seen, there was not much in the way of any sort of capability to handle an immediate threat this large. Not to mention that while he might not have worried about his Tigron, he is certainly worried about Pell. It isn't that he doesn't trust him not to go running into a building but, well. Things happen. And a city-wide fire isn't exactly the safest "thing" to happen.

It takes a few tries, but eventually he manages to find Pell, appearing behind him without a word at first, but he looks like he could probably sit down for a moment, even if there's not really a time or a place to do it right now.

I. Around the City

It was a fluke. A freak accident. Whatever you want to call it. Rey had made fire many times before. Breathed smoke, spat embers, created a hot blazing storm that burned and burned all around her. She could walk through it and not be harmed.

Not everyone can say that they have that same luxury. Of course, that's what made Rey 'the Salamander'; that sinister legend that followed her from one war to the next as the monster that left ashes and rubble in her wake. Even by her world's standards, she was an exception. Hadriel is a little more unique in its peculiar ways.

To many, she might as well be that monster again -- only rather than being driven by a lust of cruelty or war, all it took was a coughing fit that set off that spark. And then everything was out of her control.

For now she does what she can. Trying to bring the heat and flames back into herself just as it had come from her and began to spread rapidly. Several glowing, red hot veins cover her skin as she tries commanding the fires on the farthest, worst corner of the cave city. Normally, it's something she can manage. But this isn't, and she feels that as the burning blaze consuming a building floats towards her in many streams, evaporating into her skin. The heat doesn't hurt her, but a sharp pain sends her legs buckling and the rest of her crumbling to the ground.

She gasps, but hacks up black, tar-like substance from the back of her throat. Holding herself up on her hands and knees, she spews more of the stuff until she can barely breathe. Once it's all out, a black puddle pools under her, dribbling out the corner of her mouth and staining the front of her clothes.

The shit is foul; toxic. Just another thing that made her moniker a fitting one. Salamanders aren't exactly the most majestic creatures.

I. Speakeasy

Fortunately, the establishment she had put together seems relatively unharmed throughout these last few days. It helps that Rey has had help. Between herself and Firo, they've managed to keep the damage to a minimum.

Rey takes a respite in one of the booths. Though no sign of burns or injury mar her skin, her clothes are tattered, scorched on the fringes, and stained with black splotches. Some of it stains her face. Not that one can so easily discern with Rey's forehead planted firmly over the surface of the table.

All the while a particularly sickly-looking mutant cat can be seen wandering around the Speakeasy, though the animal seems to keep a distance from most people save for its caretakers -- the other being Nick Valentine. Non-humans might be an exception for Tripod, however. He's more likely to stir than the bar's founder, anyway.

III. Wildcard

Kate knows many things about her powers. It helps when you make your career off them. She knows what they can see, and also - after all her time in Hadriel - that they can't see everything. Because multi-dimensional things are weird like that. But she also can't see synthetic powers.

After the fire's burned for some time and Kate knows where her staff are, she ventures out from the clinic, trusting that the people they have will know what to do. She has to trust them, because right now her ability to boost powers is important to more than just the clinic staff. She needs to help the people fighting the fire too. She needs to do something, and the fire is as good a reason as any to keep herself occupied with other things. Things that aren't the idea of being a broken, hollow mess who no longer cares about her friends, about the people she considers family.

When Kate sees Rey, coughing up something that isn't quite the ink that Carlisle hacks up, her first instinct is to activate her powers; eyes a bright white glow that should see almost anything. Which she doesn't. And something in her brain triggers old memories of Confusion's revival, when all their powers went crazy. It might have been the only time her powers did anything to Rey's. But it's fuzzy. Maybe not. She's not sure she even remembers what it was.

And it isn't important. So, with her eyes still glowing, she dashes over, hand on the other woman's shoulder. "Shit-" She breathes out, trying to make sure Rey notices her presence with a firm grip. "The hell's the matter?"

Drake Holloway | OTA and closed

[ for those in need of rescue; OTA ]

Despite only training for this the one day, Drake isn't afraid of the fire. He's a little afraid of the buildings coming down around them, but knows that most of the crew is strong and fast -- hopefully enough that it won't be an issue. He puts on his protective gear and looks to where he's needed most. The tanker trucks are already being manned but there are people trapped on the upper floors of the spires, maybe in the houses. So there. He starts there.

Anyone who needs rescue can hear him calling out through the smoke, searching for the apartments that had people waving in the windows. He can also be found outside on the front lines, gathering his strength between trips.

Drake has officially pushed himself too far. He's gone in four times after people at the top of the spire, and not only is the structure of the building becoming unstable as the flames creep upwards, the smoke has gotten very thick. That's what gets him. Not the heat, not a weak floor, but the smoke. He coughs harshly even behind the fabric meant to protect him from the worst of the smoke, crouches down and squints through it. His eyes are stinging, and he's feeling decidedly weak and dizzy.

Finally the world fades out and he crumples to the floor of the hallway. It's only a matter of time before the fire catches up to him now and he's good and trapped. If he wakes up again.

People outside may realize that he should have been back by now....

After being rescued himself, Drake realizes he needs a break for the day. But "break" doesn't really mean break, it means "switching to a less dangerous job." Instead of running into burning buildings he helps ferry the injured between the first aid setup on the front lines and the clinic itself. He rallies to carry those who can't walk, until he wears himself down enough that he needs to stop and sit in the clinic waiting area, sweaty and streaked with soot.

[George has been busy providing basic first aid to those who need it and basically running errands for whomever needs things at the clinic and trying--emphasis on trying--to provide moral support for not only the clinic workers and those in need of aid

she's briefly distracted by the sight of one of the rescue workers taking a seat in the waiting area, clearly exhausted]

[For a group as unlucky as theirs was, it seemed like this was one of the rare times when karma was actually on the IPRE crew's side. Just days before the fire broke out, the group of four (plus child and dog) had packed up what few belongings they'd amassed in Hadriel and moved across the cave into one of the new housing developments that had just dropped into town. Their tiny apartment of three just wasn't cutting it with how quickly their little family was growing.

And let's be honest, trying to get that 'dog' of Magnus' down the stairs without her attempting to straight up attack all of their neighbors was getting to be a huge pain.

Still at the end of the day, while the fire continued to rage on over in the northern area of the cave, the new residents of house 5-1 had more than enough to keep busy with.]

[Post his spite-induced impromptu rescue missions, Kravitz is an ash-covered, singed mess. His normally impeccable appearance is only a handwave and perhaps a good rest away, but he hasn't gotten there yet. This was more important.

He knows the house is far enough way from the flames to be safe, but the thought that had cut Kravitz's portal jumping short was this: what if Taako wasn't at home? And of course, the moment he thought it, it seemed near certain. The elf has a propensity for getting himself into trouble, after all. What are the chances one of his softer hearted friends wanted to help, and Taako was roped in? What if one of them caused it? Just as likely.

Cloak ruined and skin marred with burns he cannot feel, Kravitz steps into Taako and Lup's room without warning or fanfare.]

[Well, with his home up in flames, looks like Kravitz is hanging around the home for the night. Feel free to run into him!

He can be found digging through the kitchen for a calming drink- does anyone in this house drink tea?- lounging on the couch like he owns it, or examining whatever belongings catch his eye around the house. He certainly isn't shy about making himself comfortable.]

[ Most of Malkus bottles went up like beautifully colored grenades, after spending so long extracting, mixing, and percolating liquids. Thank god he had cooped up in one of the empty rooms, so the only one peppered with multicolored shrapnel was the doctor! Perhaps you've come to look for residents in need of aid? Or maybe you're just trying to investigate the minor explosions and bursts of multicolored smoke filling the hall?

Malkus kicked his flaming door open, to a flood of acrid smoke pouring out. Any passing evacuee would, unfortunately, be treated to a vapor that would short circuit their senses for a brief moment. The doctor wheezed and screamed, running through the spire with his arms full of dripping monster pieces and glassware. ]

Damn damn damn! I'm so very sick of this damnable city! What emotion is fire?!

Outside:

[ Malkus ran, throwing papers and other pieces of rubbish as far from the fire as he could. He's far too busy to realize just how strongly he smelled of pungent herbs and burning chemicals, as he's got important things to preserve!

He would absolutely welcome any help, as he occasionally stopped to shift a heap of junk away from encroaching flames. With panic and malice in his voice, he stopped to let out an exhausted yell before staggering back to the remnants of whatever he's trying to save. ]

[ Malkus is about to get some very interesting help -

Maglor, after all, is a bard from a world where Song is more than just words and music. He can't raise a river here, not in this world that isn't his own, but he can snuff flames, a little.

Malkus will hear him, before he sees him, a voice like the ocean, power carried in its wake, drowning, snuffing water in every note. ]

Hurry! I cannot keep this up long!

[So the town is on fire! Cool! Harlan has collected his crew and also the strange demon boy that lives in his closet now and also also his cat and they have fucked off to one of the empty imported houses on the other side of the river. Since the spires are in some danger, and all. Maybe they can play games or something?]

[It would be pretty uncool if his apartment actually burned down, but he made a bad decision in picking an apartment on the seventh fucking floor, and he just got here not all that long ago, so having to move wouldn't be the worst thing. However, it takes him like ten minutes of squatting with his friends to remind him why he hates living with people. As social as he is, he needs his space.

His magic is not all that useful when it comes to firefighting. He can cast Wet and drop a blob of water onto a 20x20 ft area once a day, but the fires are spreading too quickly for that to make much of an impact. Alternatively, he can change the color of the flames so that they look cool while they're burning the city to the ground??

Throughout the event, he can sometimes be found on the north side of town doing said dumb magic. He doesn't seem particularly bothered by the threat of danger. He can just teleport out if things get hairy.

When he's not dicking around with the fire, he's dicking around south of the river and lowkey watching the fire from a distance. He hasn't explored this side of town much yet, so he's mostly just walking around and trying to get the lay of the land. He'll happily greet anyone that comes within socially acceptable greeting distance, though.]

Around town

If you don't have a particular interest in becoming a tater-tot then I'd suggest you stay away from this part of town.

[Rosen is making one of his trips between Lance's apartment and the clinic when he spots Harlan doing something. Dampening...things? maybe?]

Tucker | Open

[Tucker's not a hero, he doesn't have any healing or fire powers, and he's certainly not suicidal. Cowards live longer, as he is fond of saying.

So with that in mind, as soon as the fire breaks out, he immediately snags his backpack and fucks off across the river with his pals. And while hanging out with them is cool and all, he does eventually wander off, as he is wont to do.]

1. First Day

[On his first foray out from the squatter house, Tucker can still be found on the south side of the river, near the water, and drinking from a bottle of mystery liquor he either found in the shops or stole (he'll never tell either way). If you're after a drink, maybe you can bribe him.]

2. Rest of the Event

[Eventually standing around the river isn't cool enough and Tucker wants a better view. On subsequent days (though more likely nights) he can be found on the roof of Spire 2. How did he get up there? (How did you get up there?)

Anyway, he seems to just sort of be watching the world city burn, but he's still got alcohol if that's what you're after.]

Maglor

[ Maglor's whole life has been defined by fire, from the flames of the ship that took his youngest brother, to the deaths of his kin at the hands of dragon and balrog to the fires at the heart of the earth. But Maglor himself, he's always been drawn to water.

He senses the flames early, going to his kinsfolk first to make sure they are aware. This isn't his world - the water won't answer his call the way it might at home, but small things, he can still do. You might see him with the fire brigade - he's stronger than your average human, faster, can take more. The smoke never seems to bother him (but there's a light in his eyes, bright and inhuman, old grief, old fear, old hate) and he'll be there to pull people out, where needed, Song snuffing small flames and keeping the heat at bay. He's on his own, too, by the river, cooling the burns on his hands (old burns, but they're red and raw, right now, roused by memory from where they lie sleeping - an injury more pyschological than pysical, he knows, but the water helps them anyway), or by his brothers' side.

He won't go far from family - he's lost too many to the flames.

The longer things go, the more unstable he'll be. Fire rouses bad memories, and he's walking as much in memory as reality, by the end. ]

Maglor

[ Curufin is very happy to have his brother's help on the Fire Brigade. He hadn't asked him to join because he knew that their mutual history -- including those parts of it that Curufin wasn't there for -- had left him more sensitized to the horror of fire than was Curufin himself. And yet Maglor charged into smoking rooms with as much gusto as Fingon or Curufin or any other firefighter did, and his strength and resilience were responsible for more than one life saved that day.

At the moment, the two of them are down by the water while one of the tanker trucks is refilling. This gives Maglor a chance to cool his hands, and it gives Curufin a chance to rest a few moments. Curufin won't give himself longer than the time it takes to fill the tank, but he'll take advantage of these few moments to catch his breath and make sure his brother is all right. And then, they'll both charge right back into the fray. ]

[ Flopping onto the grass, with a small, hoarse chuckle. ] This is just like old times, is it not? Leaning on our swords and making a joke or two, and then returning to the raging battle?

Whistler | OTA

[Whistler lives in the second spire which is fortuitously located nearest to the river. He knows this. Over the months he's been in Hadriel he's meticulously mapped out the area around his spire in his mind for just such an emergency. But planning still does not account for the fear induced by the real thing.

It was the choking smell of smoke that Whistler had noticed first, a smell that had come first in wisps then quickly turned into a flood of sensation that stung his nostrils and pricked angrily like small bees inside his lungs. And though he can't see it, he knows smoke is getting thicker in his apartment. So he wastes no time trying to get out.

White cane clicking lightly in front of him when and where it touches something, he successfully manages to get free of the spire and after some fumbling he manages to get to the waters edge. He even goes so far as to step into it, shoes soaking through and pant legs clinging to his calves. The cool of it is calming, and now he can think, resting his forehead against the top of his cane and biting his lip in thought.

Where does he go from here? He can here yelling and people scrambling in the distance, he can even here the indistinct crackling and popping of fire but he can tell which way it is spreading.

So where does he go now?]

[ Curufin has been hoping that nothing further south than the city center will be endangered, but as he pulls Tanker Truck #1 around a curve of the road, heading back towards the river, he spots a plume of smoke rising from Spire Two. Oh, hell! The wind must have carried some sparks across the housing complex to the top of the spire. He halts the truck, jerks his phone out of his pocket and calls in yet another fire, asks the other riders to take the truck on to the pumping station and refill it, while he jumps out of the vehicle and tears up the stairs to start helping residents out.

A little later, the truck has returned and he and the other firefighters are drenching the part of the building that has caught fire. Curufin eventually changes duties with someone and is bringing Tanker Truck #2 back for a refill. As he's waiting impatiently, he stands on the riverbank and looks up and down it. A little upstream, he sees a lone figure standing in the water, looking somehow tentative and exhausted. Somebody injured?

He runs down the bank and sees who it is. Whistler will hear him coming, his feet hitting the soft dirt of the riverside path. ]

Are you hurt, Whistler?

Luke Skywalker OTA Spire 1

Luke is right in the heart of the disaster after Cururfin picks up him and as many others as possible and they make their way to Spire 1. He knows he'll be pulling double duty, helping to rescue as many as he can and to try and put out the fire, while also looking at any of the machines if they decide to break down.

He is glad for the protective gear and the air tanks, although he's doing his best to control his breathing with the Force. He can't always see through the smoke and flames, but his Force sense helps him hone in on anyone he might need to pull out, whether they would be able to feel the Force in his world or not. Sometimes, he flicks his hand, lifting and tossing aside heavy items without the strain of needing to lift and wear himself out. He makes use of his ability to create force-fields as well, blocking anything that might fall on him or whoever he's helping.

He can't help thinking of his father as he's helping in all this. What had the fire been like in the battle that had left him so badly burned and injured? Had his father seen visions of the battle in the mirror before? Luke himself had dealt with a few situations that weren't unlike this during his military service and the Yuzhaan Vong War-when things blew up or were left in ruins, it wasn't a pretty sight.

He just hopes they can work together enough to get the city through this-Right now and afterward, it will be a disaster.

Curufin, Luke, and the others arrive and pull up with a screech of tires. They leap from the two vehicles and start dividing up responsibilities. Curufin starts hauling the hoses from their holding brackets and attaching them to the water tank of Tanker Truck #1. They spray the flames with hundreds of gallons of water, and then thousands. Curufin elects to stick with the hoses, since he's not only a firefighter but also has a bit of affinity for fire. He cannot command it to extinguish itself, but he has a natural feel for what it is and how it works, and when he aims a hose at it, the fire is hit with more than simply the force of water. It does not make a vast difference, but it makes some.

Meanwhile, Luke has been on rescue duty. Curufin sees him from time to time as the Jedi warrior comes out with people he's escorted or carried down the flights of stairs. ]

[When Alphys awakens and hears about the fire, she knows her home should be fine- Delight's apartments are, thankfully, nearly entirely underground and therefore have very little to burn, as long as the door doesn't go up in flames. The lab, on the other hand, is in the thick of it all; all their research, her projects, the work she's collected from nearly a year in Hadriel. Irreplaceable. She has to get that work out of there, or find some way to divert the flames.

She can be found either inside the lab, trying to frantically get notes onto her person, or even outside trying to essentially move rocks to create a wall to stop the oncoming flames. But she doesn't have much in the way of putting it out, or actually protecting the Lab itself.

Some help would be absolutely appreciated.]

[The lab is on the list of things to protect, given its propensity to house things that occasionally go boom and cause catastrophic damage. Ephemera decides he's better suited to the job than most, given that his armor can take both the heat and a fair amount of shrapnel if it comes to that, and heads over.

He stares at her for a long moment before shaking his head. Job to do. Right.]

[Somebody has to clear the burning buildings and Ephemera's better suited than most to the task. His armor might be heavy as all fuck, but it comes equipped with a closed environment and scanners that can see through the smoke.

Plus he can punch through walls. That helps.

Anyone who needs some help should wave or make some noise. The motion sensors in his helmet will pick it up.]

Clinic

[Should you wander into the clinic towards the end of the day, you might notice Ephemera sitting on the floor with his back to the wall. His armor is still on, though covered in ash and soot. Ephemera himself is unharmed, though strangely motionless.

He's definitely not sleeping.]

[ Pell's done about all the healing he can for the day, but he can't go home -- his house is right in the path of the fire and it's too dangerous. So he's going to catch a nap upstairs at the clinic and go back out to the front lines. When he gets there he's not surprised to see that the place is crowded, with patients and helpers alike.

One person in the waiting area does catch his eye, though. That scarred soldier, the one who'd arrived with the knee and rib injuries. He's still got his helmet on so Pell can't be sure, but... is he asleep?

He picks his way through the room to kneel beside the man, reaching out and giving him a gentle little shake on the shoulder. ]

( She has a job to do. The city burns but Kate doesn't panic. She can work through this. The clinic has been mobilised, as have all the other forces. The lines on her face are deep and grim, but Kate feels no panic. Only a certainty that they can get this done if they work hard enough.

She jumps from place to place, pushing herself with superhuman stamina - moving faster, jumping further than humans can. Landing in the streets with ease and a loud thunk, immediately darting to anyone she sees fighting the fire or healing the wounded: )

[Whoever is responsible for this is going to get an earful from Annabeth. Probably. Assuming she can ever figure out who it is. Or if it even was anyone. If it was one of those gods...well, it's not like there's no precedent of her yelling at those. She's been running around for a while trying to help contain the blaze where she can. She's covered in soot, her hair is tangled and she hasn't bothered to fix it, and her clothes are probably a little singed. She maybe should have thought this whole endeavor through a little bit. But she can't exactly sit around, either.

Hopefully no one takes advantage of the chaos to try and get into trouble. People can't exactly watch for that right now.

She's most likely to be found running around, back and forth between streets on fire, exhausted, but pushing through it. It's not the first time she's been tired. She's probably a little scatterbrained and may not even see anyone. Someone please stop her before she hurts herself?]

[Whoever's responsible for it, they're all feeling the effects. Nothing had been newly brought out of the fire himself when he watched a stream of people, Annabeth included, running to and from the edge of the blaze trying to fight it back. He himself had been staying back from the flames and smoke until he noticed the blonde girl drop a baseball cap; he stared at it for a few moments before darting forward and picking it up, making a note to return it to her. If she came back, which she probably would.

And did, at least this time. Nothing lifted the hat up above his head and waved it, slowly and visibly.] Hey, is this yours?

[Just as you think you can't get out of the building you're trapped in, just as the flames and smoke start to become too much, there's a sudden burst of ice and wind from almost nowhere. For the moment, the immediate area is iced over in a blinding flash of magic, but it won't last long. The surrounding heat and flames won't let it last for long.

Standing there are Raidou, sans his usual cloak (seems a tad dangerous to wear flowing wool in a time like this), and his little demon Jack Frost. Both are starting to look a bit worn down, but Raidou has it in him for another rescue, and Jack Frost another snarky comment.]

That's another quarter you owe me, hee-hoo. You better hope the bar doesn't burn down-ho.

[Raidou ignores that for now, and offers a hand in help instead.]

the 15th -- Delight's Housing, #06, the Elfhouse

[ Curufin stops at the residence he shares with his relatives and their partners and visitors (some of whom climb through the windows at night). He's taking a few moments to check on them all, and to make sure the housing complex is all right. It makes him nervous that it's on the north side of town, where fire periodically sweeps across the fields that separate Spire One, the Library, Delight's Housing, and the shops and houses of the city center. He knows that the wind can carry sparks for miles, and set fire to structures that seem safe. And wouldn't you know it, a spark must have carried. As he is walking down the curving, sloping walk down into the complex, he spots a wisp and then a small plume of smoke coming up from the well of the spiral. He springs down the walkway and identifies the source -- it is the roof of the Elfhouse! He breaks into a run and comes to the door. (Or he may be met by others running out, in case anybody else noticed before he did.) ]

14th - 17th -- This one's for firefighters -- both Fire Brigade members and people who are not members of the Brigade but are fighting the fires independently, using their special skills, or even with no special skills but only courage and determination. Curufin is proud to work alongside people of either group. They can meet while dousing a flaming field, or putting out a fire in a building, or anywhere else you can think of.

[ The truck roars around the curves of the road en route to Spire one, Drake and Curufin both riding along. The smell of smoke grows stronger as they approach Spire One. Curufin replies to Drake's query as to whether he was a firefighter in his own world. ]

I was. Not formally. We were all just warriors on a frontier, and everyone had multiple skills. Fire was always a danger, since most of the settlement was built with wood, so I got some practice. And nearly every summer we had to go running up the slopes of the Dorhonion heights to help our cousins fight the forest fires. But our society was not what you'd probably call a modern one, so we fought the structural fires with a bucket brigade, and the forest fires with pick, shovel, and axe. Sometimes we beat out a brush fire with wet burlap sacks. Fun times.

[ Smile. ] But I think I prefer machines for this work.

"Sansa!" Maedhros called, not needing his brother to tell them there was fire above. "Come quickly," he reached her door to pull it open, trusting she would forgive the intrusion to get her to safety.

He'd already encouraged Anakin to check on his own home, but wouldn't be surprised if they'd find each other after those dear to them were deemed safe enough.

The tall Elf had ensured those of immediate danger who were close to him were safe before he turned his attention to putting out as many fires as he could get to. He'd carry buckets of water, douse by stamping out or muffling as he came to it. And any cry for help was answered, be it by pulling hapless individuals free of burning buildings, or lifting something up just a bit further for those who couldn't quite reach.

Maedhros had the nickname of 'The Tall' for a reason!

"Rub it in, Maitimo, why don't you," Fingon grumbles as his taller cousin again easily lifts up rubble he could barely touch. It's teasing; Fingon's long since gotten used to the height difference, and in this crisis he's certainly not lacking in things to do otherwise.

Even after a month of wandering around, Kyrii still doesn't need a room or a bed to call his own. He hardly sleeps enough to need one or the other. When he does, his standards are below rock bottom for comfort as he usually settles in an uncomfortable corner between buildings or on the grass at the park.

When the smell of fire fills the air, he's quick to begin sprinting to the buildings nearest the source of the blaze. Smoke inhalation or third degree burning clearly isn't a concern as he goes right into the flames.

Make some noise and he'll barrel through the fire to you.

The fire isn't natural. A flame isn't selective, it doesn't choose which way to turn and what to burn. That just makes things all the more interesting.

Ravine hadn't planned to get involved. She so rarely ever does. But seeing that it's too late to back down now, she lingers among the flames. Existing in a place where the fire does not. You need a physical body to need air, to breathe in the smoke and die choking and suffocating. You need skin for it to turn red and blister off your bones.

These things she does not have.

When Kyrii enters the burning building, her interest is piqued. While there is no cries of a person trapped or suffering, the wails become more obvious belonging to an animal. What Kyrii will find, instead, is a scraggly hobo cat trapped in a closet, pawing under the door and crying from the other side.

Ravine, on the ceiling, simply sits, her long legs crossed, elbow resting over a knee. Neither her hair nor coat adhere to gravity from where she observes.

Fire Trucks (9/14)

They are ill-equipped to tackle a blaze of this scale at the speed that is required to prevent it from further engulfing the buildings that have already caught alight. They must move to evacuate everyone from the affected area and direct them to proceed to the south side of the river.

If they are not able to halt the spread of the fire soon, Oscar fears the amount of smoke in the city could increase to toxic levels, forcing the population to evacuate en masse through the system of caves where even more danger awaits them. They cannot rely on their captors to aid them in extinguishing an inferno; all of the emotional activity generated by this incident is ultimately to their benefit. They could attempt to argue that a mass evacuation would lead to a loss of energy for them, but they know as well as the residents do that the caves do not offer a path of exit from Hadriel, much less an escape from their captors' influence.

But things are not so dire yet. Oscar doesn't intend to allow the situation to continue to deteriorate at the rapid rate it has been for much longer. When he isn't driving the fire engines, he is in position beside them, maintaining and monitoring them.

He is growing increasingly concerned for his cohort as it becomes apparent they are risking their health unnecessarily by not taking simple precautions like making sure they remain hydrated or taking time to recover after particularly strenuous rescues. Oscar feels inclined to contribute to the rescue efforts himself; he can enter areas filled with smoke and other hazardous airborne by-products without suffering the potentially fatal effects to which organisms are susceptible. Despite the Fire Brigade, Guard and other unaffiliated persons appearing to have it covered, Oscar is alert to the fact that he must personally see to any unattended calls of distress coming from the affected buildings. There will not be time to seek out another rescuer as none are currently available. Every second of inaction in this scenario is a second they cannot afford to lose if they are to ensure the safety of every resident.

Fire Trucks (9/15-17)

Tireless in his efforts, Oscar remains at his post for the duration of the fire, his clothes and metalwork marred by ash. He opted not to wear a protective suit since he felt it would be of better use to someone else. He wipes his eyes with a cloth in order to keep his vision clear. His body is really beginning to show its age, its articulations squeaking with every other movement now, though the sounds can't exactly be noticed over the din of the surrounding machinery. He has not had the time or opportunity to tend to his wheelwork since the fire broke out. He has only oiled them enough to keep them functional.

He is mindful of the status of the Clinic and the rest of the townspeople, hoping they are recovering and that their captors do not interfere with them any further during their time of displacement. Of course, it is possible that they are not responsible for the blaze, as at this stage there is no evidence to indicate whether this fire was deliberately lit or purely the result of an accident. It could even have been caused by an electrical fault. In any case, they cannot hope to learn the origin of the fire until it has been thoroughly doused.

Though they have managed to gain control of the flames, their work is far from over. Once they are extinguished, there is the large task ahead of rebuilding and helping resettle those who have lost their residences along with their belongings. The one thing they don't need to worry about is the water running out; their supply is finite, so their firefighting endeavors have certainly led to a depletion, but it seems like the continuous flow of the river is already replacing what has been lost.

Oscar isn't the only one whose mechanical body, while better fit to go wading through the smoke and flames than someone of flesh and blood, is seeing some wear and tear as the days pass and the battle with the fires continues. Nick spots his fellow robot over by the trucks and takes the opportunity as a patch of flames dies down to check on Oscar. They all have to look out for one another, and some folks haven't even considered their own well-being when others are in danger.

That includes Nick himself, who is starting to feel his age as he rubs at his neck. Though he doesn't have the pain of a pinched nerve or an aching muscle, he can feel something within him catching just between his shoulder and his collar.

He'd better take care of that when he gets the chance, he decides, or perhaps even now that they seem to have a minute of downtime. "Oscar!" he calls as he makes his way toward the other synthetic. "You wouldn't happen to have a screwdriver in that truck, would you?"
