Event Log: Fire Festival

What: The event log for the Fire Festival event
Where: All over the city!
When: September 14th-17th
Warnings: Smoke, fire, alas no marshmallows

Honestly, it's probably pure luck that a fire hasn't broken out sooner. All you people with your cooking and your magical fire powers and your explosives, you know? It shouldn't be a surprise that in a city with no fire alarms something will eventually get, well, a little too hot. It's only amazing that this is the first time.

So, are you one of the lucky ones? If you live on the south side of the city, in the houses that recently arrived, you'll probably be fine. You can go chill at the hot springs while everyone else desperately tries to save their homes and shops. Not your problem, right?
Or maybe you're a slightly better person than that, and you head right in to help the injured and stop the fire. Nice!

If you're on the north side of the city, things are going to be a little more urgent. Sure,
you could go chill at the hot springs too, but your house might burn down, or your favorite shop, or one of the nicer landmarks that you've gotten attached to. Maybe you should keep an eye on things - protect your own stuff, save yourself and your friends and pets, and then lend a hand to those in need. All you've got is each other!

[Fingon is actually aware that it's rude to eavesdrop on other people's conversations. Really, he does.

That doesn't mean, however, that he's not going to pick up on what's going on around him, not when he's keeping a close eye on the people involved for other reasons.

And when "the Oath" and "promise me you will keep it from Elrond" begin to get bandied about, it might really be time to step in.

So he waits for Maglor and Curufin's conversation to finish, and for another lull in the flames, before he pulls aside Maglor for a talk.]

A question, cousin. What do you think is more worrisome, a known or unknown danger?

[bythewaves]

[ He's tired and there are too many memories of dragonfire swimming too close to the surface, or he might have realised that others could hear and planned accordingly. Oops.

He blinks at Fingon and wonders why he is asking ]

I ... suppose it would depend on the danger? But generally known is preferable, if only so that one can plan?

[utulien_aure]

I would agree.

[And now Maglor get the full force of his Disapproving Face which is actually his best impression of Fingolfin, but that might be expected]

So why do you think asking people to keep secrets from your son would be a good idea? Particularly ones about the Oath?

[bythewaves]

[ He flinches a little - a movement so small that only those who know him well would spot - Fingon really does look like his formidable father when he does that - which of course means he reminds Maglor of ui>his father too ]

He's not... [ he stammers, paling and then flushing and looking away ] I... I have hurt him too much already.

[utulien_aure]

[That that particular comparison might be drawn only occurs Fingon as he sees Maglor's reaction. His eyes go wide as he curses himself for thoughtlessness, and after a breath or two he's just Fingon, the concerned cousin.]

Sorry. I should have known better than to snap.

[Sighing] But do you really think keeping him out won't hurt him, Kano?

[bythewaves]

It's alright. [ he soothes automatically, but he's chewing on his lip , a sure mark of uncertainty and distress ]

I......he....he's already...he had to watch us, Fingon. I can't...he was there, when we took them from the camp of the Valar. I can't do that to him again!

[utulien_aure]

No it isn't. [Fingon hesitates for a moment, then reaches to put a hand on Maglor's shoulder.]

I didn't know that part. [He admits after a moment's thought.] But I'm not sure it changes all that much. He knows about the Oath, and he must suspect it still has a hold on you. The only difference would be whether he's involved in preparing for what might come or whether he isn't.

And I don't think he would appreciate it if he's shunted to the side.

The best thing you can do for him is to show that you trust him. That if there is a problem, you aren't willing to keep him in the dark about it.

[bythewaves]

[ He leans a little into the offered hand ]

I just...I don't want him to worry about me! He has put up with so much....

[utulien_aure]

And if he felt enough was enough, I'm sure he's had plenty of chances to turn you away.

[A slight squeeze.]

We are all family. We are stronger together than we are apart.

[bythewaves]

I did not .... wish to worry any of you.

[utulien_aure]

We are at the moment living in a giant cave in another world as the food source for beings who feed off our emotions. We stand a chance of our greatest nightmares showing up every month. And we're Noldor, and of the line of Finwe.

There's no need to overdo it, but a slight bit of worry might be warranted.

[bythewaves]

[ Maglor laughs softly at that, relaxing ]

When you put it that way...

I am sorry. I must be a terrible burden.

[utulien_aure]

You, a burden? Never.

[He moves forward to give Maglor a quick hug.]

Are your brothers a burden to you? Am I? It's the same thing.

[bythewaves]

We're both going to need to do laundry.

[ Maglor smiles as the hug stirs up another cloud of flour ]

I'm broken, though.

[utulien_aure]

We were going to have to anyway, sooner or later.

You're not broken. ['Broken' is for objects, not people.] You're hurt, and the injury runs old and deep.

But who among us hasn't been hurt? Who still isn't?

[bythewaves]

Laundry and a bath.

[ Maglor looks away shyly ]

I feel that way. [ He murmurs softly ]

But thank you, Finno.

[utulien_aure]

[Fingon bursts out laughing] I'm not twelve anymore, Kano, you needn't lecture me on washing up.

[His expression softens at that.] It's not how we see you. Not me, not your brothers, not Elrond.

Anytime. You'd do the same.

[bythewaves]

Oh really?

[ Maglor raises an eyebrow at him and looks pointedly at both their current states of flour-ness ]

I know. I love you all very much, you know. I missed you.

[utulien_aure]

Really.

[Still chuckling, he follows Maglor's gaze to the mess on their clothes.]

Don't worry, even if something happens to the house I'm sure Elrond will let us borrow his bath for a few days.

[And if not, well maybe the lake doesn't have too many alarming monsters living in it.]

We do know. And we all want to make up for all the time you've spent missing us.

There's always the river?

[ Maglor sighs and relaxes, leaning back against him ]

I don't mind. I...just might take a while, that's all. To get used to having you again, I mean.

I figured. though I first wondered whether there was a bakery or something in town that I'd missed

The river would work as well. Might be more fun.

[Fingon's happy to let him stay there as long as he wants]

That's more than fair. But we are going to worry a bit, I'm afraid. We can't exactly stop doing so.

[ Maglor points out, a slow curl of amusement in his voice ]

We should drag the others.

[ after all, they all smell of smoke ]

I will try not to make you worry.

[And definitely not to push each other into the water, ignore the gleeful grin growing on Fingon's face.]

Oh, I wouldn't dream of not bringing them along.

[Cousinly affection, obviously. He's just concerned, ash doesn't go well with Maedhros' hair.]

[ Of course not. They are lords of the Noldor, kings and princes. They would never engage in such juvenile behaviour as a water fight. Maglor's eyes are totally not dancing at the thought ]

The faster one is in the quicker one adapts.

[ He agrees blandly ]

I... will try. It's just... odd. That's all. I've fallen out of the habit, I suppose.

[...Of course, it's also said that the fear of being thought childish is in fact a childish thing. So really, being adults they should be free to act as childish as they please.
