Event Log: Party Royale

What: The event log for the Party Royale event

When: September 22nd-29th
Warnings: Paintball, loss of consciousness, and partying!

As is par for the course in Hadriel, at some point throughout the day- waking up, making breakfast, doing laundry- you find an item. This isn't just any item though, it's a tried and true paintball gun, shining and just waiting to be picked up. This gun never runs out of ammunition, never malfunctions, and almost always hits the target that you're aiming at, so say hello to your new best friend for the next week.

Touching or picking up the gun will fill you with a competitive surge, which will likely increase when you find the note that's left with it, saying nothing more than be the last one standing. With instructions like that, how could you lose?

Well, you could lose if someone else shoots you. But never fear, there's a plan for that too! Even if you embrace the throes of unconsciousness, the gods have got your back and will eventually teleport you into a grand party where prizes will be handed out based on how long you survived. Awesome! At this party is also the traditional copious amounts of food and drink, as well as everyone's favorite goddess Delight and everyone's slightly-less-favorite goddess Rage!

...ah. When you put it that way, yeah. I guess a party isn't the worst thing in the world, even if it is forced.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not really the kind of person who loves parties.

It's just nice to get a break from the awfulness sometimes.

I take it you're the type of person used to a much less stressful life. Granted, it's only been two months, but nothing here has been anywhere near as terrible as my actual life back home.

No... I wouldn't say that.

[But he's also not inclined to get in any arguments about the stress level of his life. As he was told many times as a child, plenty of other people have it worse. He shouldn't complain.]

What was your home like, then? It sounds pretty bad.

[there are many different levels of worse, Adam. Maybe they can bond over that.]

Bad? I wouldn't say that. But I'm a pirate captain, so things are considerably less peaceful in my life. There is no settling down with a nice job and a family and never having a gun pointed at you.

A pirate captain... yeah, I can see how that would be pretty much nonstop excitement. But didn't you choose to do that?

[Do people... accidentally become pirates? Maybe.]

Technically, yeah. I'm not complaining, it's merely a fact of life. But I've seen worse than paint guns that cause coma, just saying.

I think most of us have. I don't think I've met anyone yet who comes from a completely peaceful place.

[Maybe it's human nature. Adam would say so, anyway.]

This is the first time I've heard 'pirates', though.

Oh? I suppose that answers the question whether anyone from my world had been here before.

[not that he was going to ask anyone but he had wondered]

Though there are pirates in other worlds. At least, I would guess as much given the reactions I get from people when I say the word.

Yeah, I think there are even still pirates in my world, but not the, uh... swashbuckling kind.

[Software pirates, maybe? And there was that movie about Somali pirates that Adam didn't see.]

I haven't met everyone who's ever come here, but I have been around for awhile. No other pirates so far.

[only a little eye-roll at the swashbucking - it's not the first time he's heard that]

No wonder I'm such a novelty. Still pirates? What, are they otherwise extinct?

Pretty much, yeah.

[He shrugs, honest.]

There's movies about them and stuff, they're pretty popular as a Halloween costume, but you don't see them in real life.

Law just snorts a bit under his breath]

What do you do back there, then? Is there anything interesting at all if there's no adventure?

Pirates aren't the only source of adventure in the world. I'm pretty boring, though.

I just go to school and - I guess - take care of the ley line. Other people do more exciting things.

[it sounds vaguely like something...fairy-tale-ish maybe. Nothing in Law's direct experiences]

It's like a line of energy, magical energy. Weird stuff happens around it, and it's really powerful.

[That might not be a great explanation, but it's the simplest he can give.]

Is there magic where you're from?

Ah.

[the answer is probably clear from the droll look that washes over his face in the next second. Even after having people around here use magic near him - and on him.] ...no. Only the superstitious still believe natural abilities to be magic.

I would have said something similar myself. But magic is natural, too.

I suppose that's one benefit of worlds colliding. Being able to learn about alternate theories and processes...

Sure. It's part of the world, it just abides by its own rules.

[Adam, a scientifically minded person, finds magic difficult to work with - but not impossible.]

Yeah, you're right about that. It's really interesting how different everyone's worlds are. You've got pirates, I've got magic, someone else has spaceships.

[okay no that's a discussion for another day. One thing a time here, Law.]

Then it's less a case of 'magic' used to mean 'something I'm not intelligent enough to parse' and more to suffice as a term for whatever it is powers or abilities are in your world. Understandable.

I wouldn't really call magic 'powers and abilities'. It's not as easily categorized as that. I know what you mean, though - a lot of people here have very specific abilities that seem like they could be magical, but aren't quite. But I guess - well, I have a closer relationship with magic than most people, but I can't throw fireballs at will or anything like that.

Shame. [deadpan - he's kidding! Mostly.] I've met one man who can, here. Could be a useful skill.

Maybe it's better than I don't jump to conclusions in trying to understand. Even I once thought some things weren't real until I experienced them for myself. As long as there is reason, even if it isn't science.

That's a good way to look at it. Especially coming here, it's like - you suddenly see all these things that would never happen or exist where you're from. I think that's true for everybody.
