By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

Oh, I dunno. There are some pretty good people out there if you keep lookin'! Believe me, I've looked all over the place.

[ There's some quality folks in the universe. Like, this kid is gonna be one. That's already a good count. ]

I mean, the food thing, I actually don't know about. It just shows up. H- maybe I've been stealing this whole time! Someone's got a tab for me if I ever start makin' some money!

[ You know what. Fuck it, yeah. ]

Okay. You gotta stand astride this- this amazing broom of flying! And you gotta say--

[ He clears his throat and wiggles his fingers, the whole entire actual shebang. ]

Hang ten. Or I guess you can find a witch to kiss. But if you fly into a tree and die, I don't wanna hear you complain about it!

[ What's it like to RP a responsible competent adult. ]

「He's the biggest media disappointment there has ever been. At least in modern times he got that turned around.

All he can do, is blink at her with those big eyes of his.」

I don't think we have anything like that...? How do they make books with your face?

「That sounds absolutely terrifying, and don't get him started on his tube... The hell is that?」

[puzzlingly]

「Why is she--what is she? No, but why?」

I'm giving it to you, because I want to, it is not stealing. But it's fine, I'll help you find what you really want. Is that good?

「He just wants to make her happy!」

[ Oof! Ok, he may have deserved that. He laughs, anyway. ]

I am not! It's polite!

Grown-up-Taako is right, though. You know how you were going through my room earlier? Your room's right next door.

[puzzlingly]

Atem look at her with such interest as a cat would be observing its little prey, his eyes wide open taking everything in. He's marveled at all the things that seem so strange to him. How come he never wondered how they turned on the ovens in the kitchens, for example? He should probably pay more attention to the things he's given for granted, they seem so interesting to learn.

But just as time passes and there is nothing happening, the young prince starts growing a little impatient. His hair might be still a little damp, and it only makes it feel so damn hot, maybe he should go for another swim, the water was cool and nice and--

It's not until Ravine makes a sound that he notices the very subtle smoke that comes from the tinder. Oh, he missed it!

A little more excited, although a little confused, he reaches for the grass and gives it to her.

"How did you do that!?" Is it magic? No, of course not, magic would have been faster!

[hellosirs]

[ You know what? Angus is still kind of a weenie, that move totally works on him. He yelps and just starts wriggling like crazy, trying to squirm his way out of Lup's grasp. ]

What're you even gonna do with one shoe?!

[She doesn't hold it against him for falling asleep. Yehudit tried to do the same, but in the end they were both just as tired, and the brief darkness of night was oddly comforting as daylight flashes over.

[Atem doesn't have to wait very long before Yehudit starts to wake as well. It takes her more time to remember where she is, who she's with, and what happened. And when it reality finally dawns on her, her heart skips and she jerks away from Atem.]

S-sorry. [She rubs her eye with the back of her hand, now alert from embarrassment.]

[Yep, this is her nerd all right. Eager to learn absolutely anything and everything all at once. It's not so surprising to Lup, who can see so much of Barry's adult self within this sweet kid, but it's a special kind of insight into his childhood that only feels fair after he'd gotten to see so much of hers earlier in the week.

She keeps walking, never once breaking stride, just to let Barry float on after her, his stumpy little legs kicking in the air behind them.]

You'll get there, little man. There's a hella ton of studyin', sure, but for folks like us, magic comes easily. We've got a knack for it.

[Huh? Is it strange that a kid is most interested in a spell that deals with calling upon someone's darkest, deepest fears? Naaah.]

Maybe. A lady doesn't give away all her secrets right at once. Didn't your mom teach you that?

[Barry squeezes her hand, gentle and so so soft, and the slightest touch of pink lights up at the girl's cheeks again, her toes curling against the ground at the nice warmth that settles inside of her.

Lup honestly doesn't have a clue what all of this could mean, but boy, she likes it. She doesn't want to let go of Barry for awhile now.]

Oh, you don't? Really? [Oh. There's another thing they have in common. And yeah, sure, Barry at least has his mom around still, but it's kind of nice to know she isn't the only kid without a dad in her life. Just another thing to bind them together as friends, an experience they can share in, even if it isn't necessarily pleasant.]

Wait, you're gonna let me pick first? How come? You're not gonna try t' shove me over or make fun of me for what I pick, are you? Most of th' boys I play with don't like girls pickin' first. [Or when it came to the twins, ever.]

[And that is precisely why Lup has zero intention of bringing up either Barry or Kravitz while Taako is this age. Attempting to explain that whole situation just sounds like a headache waiting to happen. If the idea of living with friends baffles the boy right now, the idea of boyfriends, men that the two of them actually loved and trusted with their whole hearts, was not going to be taken very well.

But that's just fine. Lup will give both of the men a head's up beforehand. Just be cool, guys.]

Thanks, Taako. You've always got my back.

[She doesn't bother telling him that she'll handle it all herself. Lup remembers their childhood like it was yesterday. They'd always split everything between them, always taken such pride in watching out for the other. She couldn't take that away from him. So if Taako wants to spy on Merle while he wiggles around in the vents for her, she'll turn an eye and let him.]

Somethin' like that. The nice thing about this place we're in, Hadriel, is shit's pretty free. We don't have to work for anyone but ourselves. Sometimes we'll trade spells for favors, if we can trick someone into doin' crap for us, but we mostly only cast the spells we wanna. Same goes for food. We just cook for ourselves now.

We're really livin' the life.

[restinglichface]

What's what? A twin? You don't know what'a twin is?

[puzzlingly]

Nope.

「What? He's never heard the term before! Ironic, that, because his dad and his uncle were kind of twins. Not identical at least, but no one talks about that, ever. It'd just bring problems, (who should have been pharaoh, whose son is the rightful heir and what not), we don't want that kind of issues brought up in our perfect kingdom, okay? Hardly perfect at the moment, if he keeps stuck in here.」

[knockthemdead]

[Barry keeps saying 'she', and it's getting less and less funny, and more something Kravitz can just focus his anger on, instead of all the fun he's apparently going to be missing out on.]

You're such a dumb idiot! I wouldn't even want to be at a sleepover with you! I bet it's so boring that Taako leaves halfway through.

[ he nods determindely and tries again ]

[Abigail laughs for a moment.]

You sound like an old man.

[She'd say he sounded like her grandparents, if she knew them. A pause.]

You're serious? They're websites.

[She thinks back to what's learned in school.]

Are they all banned? I thought that only happened in places like China and North Korea. Maybe Iran. Are you communist? I didn't think they had royalty.

I did! That was really great! And now you have a new skill to show off to your family!

Hey, you first. ( he takes the splash with grace, chuckling a little bit and... actually enjoying himself. it had been some time since akira had just let his hair down like this... )

[Lup's never had any friends besides her brother, especially not another girl. The idea is exciting!]

Alright, let's do this!

[Taako doesn’t pick up on Barry’s discomfort, if any. He’s just using this conversation to be really, really validated. No one’s ever acknowledged that the kind of life he and his sister lead is hard; living without a home, without a support system, is fucking difficult. Not that he wants to be a sob story, but if this kid is rich, maybe he has some coins to spare. Or will keep bringing him food. He’d like either of those things.

At his question, though, Taako swings his arm out to gesture to the fort.]

I found all this stuff! There’s boxes and a place to sleep in that can’t be seen from the door and food. Plus there’s a place nearby with a bathroom that has running water that nobody locks the door to.

[Nobody lives there, either, but he and Lup don’t tend to trust abandoned houses. Very few good escape routes.]

Plus I’m really good at cooking. Adults even pay me t’do it. Or you can do the stone soup routine.

[pocketspa]

[He’s much too deep into this to properly apologize now, even if he feels a little guilty seeing this kid crying like that. Oh well. The damage is done and he has no time to cry over spilled sand. He needs to get out, and fast. Taako looks back towards Barry, still feeling a bit of regret as he locks eyes with him again.]

Yeah, well, maybe… it didn’t hafta happen, or. Something.

[That’s probably the closest he’s getting before Taako breaks eye contact and starts scurrying towards another door. He stops when he gets to the doorway, looking back at the other boy, sun illuminating his hair, the shape of his ears.]

Next time, you should fight back. If it’s important to you.

[And then, off he goes, into the city again.]

[Yeah yeah whatever, he's gonna let them go. He doesn't appreciate the tongues, though. He lips his lip slightly and makes a soft snapping noise with his teeth. Just a warning. Watch yourselves.

And because he can't verbally respond to Lup's dumb question but he's still offended, he gives her as unimpressed a look as a wolf can give and makes one of those dramatic, irritated husky sounds.

He's not a werewolf, dammit!!!]
