By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[yeah, very much occupied. she's ended up in the house George lives in, George at the table and finishing her breakfast. the child's appearance earns an eyebrow raise, but whatever, this is Hadriel]

Go ahead. It'll just heal up again.

[hasitsthorns]

[ ... sniffle. ]

You're a healer?

[ She looks human but Rose knows better than to be deceived by appearances alone even at this age. She's seen her mother's human glamour, after all. ]

[augh, no! no crying! George is terrible at comforting people, absolutely terrible!]

I guess you could say that. But that's not why I'd heal.

[yup, despite being a personification of death, George looks like your everyday eighteen year old girl]

[hasitsthorns]

[ Yes, crying! This world is horrible and she hates it already. She wants to go home, to her snow-covered home and curled up next to her mother. ]

Why would you?

[ Of course she's going to ask. Children's curiosity is a powerful thing. ]

[oh shit, there's crying. no. nooooo. where's a tissue? do they even have tissues?]

I would because [damnit. she's going to have to talk about death with a little kid. and it's her own fault] I'm a Grim Reaper and we heal real fast.

[ If she doesn't, it's fine. Rose has sleeves. Besides, her crying's slowed since she first started by now thanks to her interest.

And now suspicion. Her eyes narrow, ears flatten back. ]

You're not a shinigami.

[okay. sleeves will work. not crying would be even better?

...oh boy. what's up with this?]

What's a shinigami?

What do you mean what's a shinigam? Those are the death spirits. You're not one. [ Or, at least, she doesn't look like one. Not the ones Rose has seen depicted in the stories.

Little does Rose know they actually often take unassuming human appearances, same as her people. ]

I'm--well, I'm death, but I'm not a spirit. I'm flesh and blood. Well. The blood's a little--syrupy now. But it's there. [George has never heard of shinigami before, so when Rose says "spirits," George hears "ghost."

George is about as normal as a human being can look, but she's far from human]

Ewww, [ she says, tongue rolling out between her fangs for emphasis. Syrupy blood. At least hers a 'normal' color, unlike some yokai... Bleeding purple might be pretty cool though. Maybe. ]

Then you're a shinigami. But you don't look like any I've seen. They usually got big black feathery wings like the tengu.

[it's more of a deep red and sort of slimy and sticky. it's gross]

I guess so? Where're you from? Maybe we're different where I'm from. Can't say I'd mind having wings, though.

[ Ew. Rose does not want. ]

[ If this girl's a shinigami, she should know what that is. ]

I've never heard of that before. Sorry. I'm from Seattle. Well, one of the suburbs.

[ ... Huh. Strange. This lady is so strange. Everything here is so strange. ]

[well, she's not wrong about George being strange and everything here being strange]

Yeah, sorry, but I don't think I can. Where is home, anyway?

[ Figures. Almost none of the adults here are any sort of competent. And unlike her adult version, this child definitely views George as an adult. ]

The Makai. Hida, Japan, is where the closest place we can get to the human world is... I've never been though. Just my parents, sometimes.

[well, George really doesn't see herself as an adult. but she doesn't see herself as a kid, either.

she takes a moment to digest this information]

...damn. Yeah, that's--really not here. It sounds like you come from some other dimension entirely.

Well, duh. I told you, I'm from the Makai.

[ But wait! Does that mean- ]

Is this. Is this the Ningenkai? [ Her eyes go wide at the idea. ] The human world?

[ Bestill her little heart. ]

Okay, yeah, you did tell me that.

[she is hoping that this is good news]
Well, it's a human world. Though it's not just humans living here. We've got elves, an ice alien, and monsters, too.

[ ... Why is this place so weird. ]

Yokai are monsters.

Yeah? Are you a yokai? No offense, but you don't look very monsterous to me.

[ The tiny girl looks up to her white locks of hair, presumably to the ears atop her head. The wolf tail curls around her legs in uncertainty. ]

I mean, I don't mind but- We're supposed to be.

[George follows her gaze and nope, still not monstrous]

Yeah? You're supposed to be scary?
