By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[The dwarven girl takes another step back, narrowing her eyes.]

You're lying! I don't know you, who put you up to this?

[shit. this is not going well. time to turn on the charm?]

I promise that I'm not lying and nobody put me up to this. [she opens her purse, pulls out the doughnut, and offers it to Aren] Here. It's yours.

[The little dwarf girl's eyes lock on the doughnut again, as her stomach rumbles. But--]

Mam says don't trust nobody. If people're nice to you, that means they want somethin'. So what do you want?

[it's glazed and it's soft and delicious~~]

Most times, your mom would be right, but all I want to do is give this to you.

[She frowns, clearly torn. It's just a pastry-thing, and it smells so good. But the fact that she knows Aren's name is just weird.]

...if you're lying, I'll pickpocket all your stuff later and you'll never, ever find it.

[That settled, she snatches the doughnut and immediately takes a bite, too eager to eat with any delicacy.]

[Hadriel is just plain weird, but it does have its upsides. like doughnuts]

Good thing I'm not lying.

[she wasn't expecting fancy manners]

[Aren's too busy eating to reply, at least at first. The rush of sugar and flavor, is too much for her to just savor bite by bite, so she practically inhales it, whatever the cost.]

Wow, this is really fancy! It must've cost a lot....

Nah, it's free. And there's more where that came from.

[Laura has a key to the bakery. Delmar won't mind if she feeds her friend some more, right? right]

[She wipes the crumbs away from her face, clutching the last bit left.]

...you want me to steal from the bakery? Is that why you're giving me this? 'Cause I'll do it.

[Whatever it takes to make it so that she's not owing anyone. Repaying is easier for her to handle than people just giving her stuff, even if it smells and tastes so good.]

It's not stealing. It's just eating the leftover stuff from today. [she shrugs] There's no such thing as money here.

[Aren just stops and stares as though the woman's grown another head.]

...what?!? But--that can't be true, how do people live her and get stuff to eat and wear and...everything!

[Laura shrugs]

It's all free. Wanna go to the stores and check 'em out?

[She bites her lip, still suspicious.]

That sounds too good to be true...but if guards come, I'll run away and they'll just arrest you.

[Laura would lie to a lot of people, but not to Aren]

That's what I thought, too. But it's true. And we have guards, but they're not worried about that kind of stuff.

[So much side-eyeing, though there's a spark of hope.]

That's really weird. The guards I know would be all over you if you stole so much as one coin or someone's lichen bread. Why don't the guards here care about any of that? What do they beat people for, then?

[That's all guards really are to her, people to avoid getting hit by.]

[she smiles down at Aren]

They don't beat people for anything. All they do is patrol and try to keep people from killing other people. That's it.

[and all cops are to Laura are old fogeys to ruin the fun]

[Her brow furrows at that, and she shakes her head.]

Surfacers are so weird.

[But who cares, there are sugary treats to rescue!]

We're weird, but I think the pros outweigh the cons.

[and they're at the bakery. Laura uses her key to unlock the door and she gestures for Aren to enter]

[The little girl peers around in wonder, stopping short as she's a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount and variety before her. That doesn't last long, though; she rushes forward to grab what she can and stuff it into her mouth or whatever she can find that will hold all those goodies. Someone's going to eat themselves sick.]

[there are apple pies, more doughnuts, brownies, peanut butter cookies, and more to choose from.

Laura laughs] Hey, easy! You're gonna eat too much.

['But it's so good!' Or at least that's what Aren tries to say, around a mouthful of the stuff. She's way too hungry for manners, especially when she's not going to get in trouble for taking what's here.]

[she gets the general idea of what she's trying to say. she starts looking for a glass to put milk in, to maybe slow Aren down a little before she makes herself sick. she finds a glass, gets out the milk, pours a glassful, and takes it over to Aren]

Here. To wash it down.

[The milk is largely ignored until Aren begins to choke, and she frantically grabs for it anyway. That seems to help, though it gives her one hell of a milk mustache.]

...thanks. [Burp.]

[yes. yes, it does. she's choking back giggles because she doesn't want Aren to think she's laughing at her]
