By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[ It would absolutely only freak her out more. Good call, Alphys. Please to not be screaming about the adorable pup. She'd be offended to be thought of as adorable anyway. She's ferocious and frightening. Totally.

Very warily, the wolf crawls out from her hiding spot and reaches out tentatively for the cookie. Her fingernails are more akin to claws and her fangs might be small but are still plenty sharp. She takes a bite, chews, and ]

S'too sweet.

[ Bleh. ]

[She can't help but smile, so overwhelmingly tickled at how cute this entire experience is. ]

Sorry-- I really like, uhm, sweet things, so I was h-hoping you would too.

[She shifts a bit to sit down, legs crossed while her tail curls around her.]

Are you okay?

I like spicy stuff.

[ A stark contrast to the tiny, fanged scowl still firmly on her face. She seems to be softening gradually though. Just a little less edge to her body language as she (despite them being too sweet) continues to nomnomnom the cookie. ]

M'fine, [ she says, instantly. ] Just lost. This isn't my home and I'unno how I got here.

[God she's cute. At least she's still gripping the cookie, which should help with the next part.]

Well, uhm... e-everyone here is away from home. It's, uh... like a vacation! Y-You know, in the sun and sand, like a big beach? Have you ever been?

[Little lies aren't so bad to a crying kid, right? Yeah. This is fine.]

[ Hm. Hhmm. The wolf's eyes squint suspiciously. Something tells her that Alphys isn't necessarily telling the truth, but... It's a lie she wants to believe. So she will. That's fine.

(It is not, in fact, fine.) ]

No, [ she says. ] It's too cold at home and my parents don't let me go too far alone. But I've been ice fishing! I'd like to go fishing here too, maybe... Do you think I could?

[Yes! An activity! Perfect. She can fumble her way through this!]

Yeah! I mean, uhm, probably. How do you usually d-do it? There are fish here, uh, in the river and the lake, so...

With my teeth!

[ This is punctuated by a fanged grin, tail swishing behind her. ]

What kinda' fish? I hope they're tasty. I'm pretty hungry.

[This would be cute if Alphys wasn't at least a little afraid of Rosie "playfully" biting her tail. Yikes.]

Well, uh, w-why don't we go find out! Come with me, I'll, uhm, I'll take you. Just make sure not to go deep, because uh, there's other d-dangerous stuff in there.

[ Maybe your tail shouldn't look like a tempting chew toy, Alphys. Ever think of that? It's even bright colored and looks squishy. ]

I bet I can take whatever's in there! I'm not afraid of anything!

[ ... Says the girl who Alphys found crying just moments ago. Looks like lying came to Rose at an earlier age than even she remembers. ]

[Because it is squishy! She's squishy! It's just how she is!!!]

You, uhm, s-shouldn't! I mean, there's no point. Even if it's dangerous, isn't it nicer not to start a fight...? They're just trying to live down there.

[Y'know, don't bother them and they won't bother you.]

[ Ssssoooo temping. It is taking a lot of restraint for this little wolf to not at least nibble, I'll tell you what.

To that, Rose seems almost... confused. ] That's just what yokai do. We fight everything.

[ Which is actually true. It probably isn't surprising that creatures born of negative human emotion aren't very nice. Most of them like to fight.

Most of them. ]

[See, this has always been the thing for Alphys that's most confusing. Monsters in her world are made of nice thoughts and love. But everywhere else they're-- terrible. Mindless. Like to hunt and kill. But for her, that was always humans.

It just makes no sense.]

Well... d-do you have to? All the time? Can't you have fun sometimes instead?

[ What's fun? Can you eat it? No, okay, Rose knows what fun is. As for having any herself... ]

Well. Yeah. Fighting is fun? It's supposed to be, anyway. I don't know about that but a lot of my kind seem to really enjoy it.

Well, I mean... as long as it's, uh, p-playful.

[Monsters on her end aren't exactly exempt, but bullet patterns in greetings aren't really considered... fighting, per se. It's just bullets. But that's so hard to understand for humans.]

Well! You can go after the fish anyway. Plus the water in the lake is nice and cool.

[ It sure is. Totally! Totally. (It's not.) ]

Yeah, I need to cool off soon. How can you guys stand this heat?

Well, uh, s-some of us deal with it better than others...

[She starts leading Rosie over to the aforementioned lake, not taking her hand but leaving it if she'd like to.]

But it'll be good! People swim there all the time.

[ At first, it doesn't seem like she might. Then, tentatively, a tiny clawed hand circles around Alphys' own edged fingers. It's just a little something to help keep Rose grounded right now, really. It feels like... a lot to deal with, suddenly. ]

They're smart to! Do you not like to swim?
