Event Log: The Hope of a Child

By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

Yeah. This place is shit.

[he starts walking, not caring much whether Yusuke follows but figuring he might]

There's some big ponds over there, though. It might not be clean but it's something.

[opens his mouth to say something about Law's bad language, but thinks better of it, and hurries after him.]

Let's try it.

[this right here is why he basically led his own gang at thirteen.

At least there's no Devil Fruit to stop him from swishing his hand in the water and then cupping it to taste it.]

It's okay I guess. It doesn't taste gross.

[Yusuke kneels and scoops up a mouthful eagerly, and then another. Then he splashes a little on his face to try and clean off the tearstains... swallows a mouthful accidentally in his eagerness, then winds up coughing and spluttering.]

It's-- [cough cough!!] --it's fine.

[hot_mes]

Yeah...

[Law flops onto the ground, folding his skinny little legs and tugging at his hat. Stupid hot nasty planet.]

How am I supposed to be a pirate when there's no ocean here?

[foxpup]

[Yusuke's pretty jealous of that hat, all things considered. He sits beside him, looking a little perkier but still struggling in this heat.]

A pirate? Like playing pretend?

[hot_mes]

[it does shade his eyes nicely, but it's furry so it's super-hot. Oops.]

No, not pretend. I really am a pirate. I just joined.

[foxpup]

[gasp!]

Then, you'll go on all kinds of adventures, like in the stories? [That's so cool?!?!]

Maybe. At least I'll get to blow up ships and shoot things, that's all I want.

[right back into the talk of death, yep]

Why do you want to destroy things?

[hot_mes]

[surprisingly blank-faced, none of his earlier irritation]

Because they destroyed everything in my life. I just want to get them back.

[foxpup]

[Yusuke looks away, a sad expression on his face.]

What will you do now? You can't get them back here.

[hot_mes]

I dunno. [he still yelled at two or three people, declaring his intentions. So far no one called him out on it] I guess I can't. But maybe there's somebody else to take down.

[foxpup]

Don't you want to do anything besides fight?

[hot_mes]

[maybe Yusuke's asking all the right questions, maybe this Law is just less self-conscious and secretive, but he's saying a lot of things no one else has heard. Even now, he can't help but be honest.]

I've only got three years left to live. I can't learn enough to be a doctor in that short a time, there's nothing else I can do. All I want is to pay the world back for taking my family and my life away from me.

[foxpup]

[Yusuke shakes his head in disagreement.]

You can do lots of things. Even though my mother was really sick, she still wanted to be an artist and make beautiful works...

[Granted, she didn't have a reason to want revenge on anyone, but it's still enough to make Yusuke think there are other ways for Law to live, too.]

[the only way to keep from having to face up to that idea is to avoid it completely. Turn it back around onto Yusuke]

Was she nice? Your mom. Did she get to be an artist?

[foxpup]

[He nods.]

I don't remember much, but I know she was very kind. She was studying under Sensei to be an artist. Now I'm learning, so I can do the same.

[hot_mes]

[it's hard to admit he misses his mom when all he wants to do is hate the world]

So your sensei is an artist. I don't know if an art teacher can do much to protect kids in a place like this. [just sayin, no judging]

But I don't know what to do by myself... Sensei's always there.

[And he takes care of him, even if he can't necessarily protect him. What is Yusuke supposed to do all alone like this?]

[so Yusuke's lost and doesn't know who will take care of him, while Law has lost his one final purpose in life. It's a good thing this is all, in some way, a bad dream.]

If you really wanna do anything you have to survive, first. We can't just lay down and die here. That won't get anything done.

Can you teach me? If I stay with you, I don't want to do anything dangerous or hurt anyone, but...

[He does want to survive, and that seems to be something Law is good at.]

[what do you mean no hurting anyone? Awww...]

I guess. But that means if we get attacked you can leave it to me. I'll beat up anyone who tries.

[foxpup]

O-okay... But I don't want you to get hurt either.

[hot_mes]

I've been through worse.

[he picks himself up and uselessly dusts off his shorts]

Water's fine. Food, still have to find that. But it's really hot. Maybe we should find somewhere to rest and wait till the sun goes down. That way we can move in the dark and no one will see us.
