By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[Hmm. Ephemera tips his head to the side.]

Go through some forms first. If you do them well enough, I'll spar with you.

[A pause.]

What'd you mean, what am I?

「He finally grabs one he thinks he can handle. Then approaches to the weird guy.」

Yeah like... your body is weird.

「The concept of armor is something he cannot grasp, soldiers in his time go without it.」

[Ephemera frowns.]

You mean my armor?

Is that what it is?

「Head tilt, and now he's super interested.」

It looks heavy. How can you move? Isn't it too hot? What is it made of?

Yeah.

[Ephemera smiles a little.]

It's real heavy. But's it's climate-controlled, and it moves with me, 'cause it's hooked up to my brain. Pretty awesome, right?

「That makes absolutely no sense to him.」

Is it like... magic?

[Ephemera hums to himself, shaking his head.]

No. Engineering. People a lot smarter than me put it together. C'mon. You're showing me what you've got.

[He gestures with his hand.]

Strike. Long as you don't go for my face, it's not gonna hurt me.

「Atem squints at that, sounds like magic anyway. Truth to be told, the warning is useless, there is no real way such little squirt can reach this guy's face. Unless he climbs his armor or something, which he could do but...

He nods at him and takes a fighting position. The lady with the dagger taught him a good one, and that's not to announce his attacks, and there he goes, showing that he's not entirely ignorant to what he's doing.

He strikes, but he's far too kind with it, he doesn't really want to hurt the guy and he's not sure how hard that armor is.」

[Hmm. Kid's fast, Ephemera has to admit.] That's good. You know how to hold it. But you gotta aim a little higher on somebody like me.

[He taps his chest plate, where the strike landed.]

Armor's too thick here for a blade like that. You wanna go between the plates, see?

「He's absolutely amazed that he did nothing to him. That armor thing is pretty cool. He nods at the instructions, but, why aim higher if he can aim even lower... He tries again, aiming to go higher but it's just a bluff. His next strike goes to the back of his knee, between the plates, easier to reach for him since he's so short. And since the first strike did nothing, he does apply some more strength there.」

[Kid's fast, all right. Ephemera grunts, shifting his weight a little so the blow doesn't draw blood. If the strike hurt, he doesn't show it.]

Good. You're quick on your feet. And you know how to feint.

「He's not trying to hurt him, but since he doesn't show it... He just gives him a big toothless grin. Kids.」

I told you I knew how!

「Not too much humility there.」

What's your name anyway?

[Ephemera grins.]

You sure did. I'm Ephemera.

「A weird name that goes with a weird guy! That's good.

But he doesn't think he needs to tell him his name, like, why would he? Everybody should know it!」

Will you spar with me now, Ephemera?

I get your name?

[He watches the kid for a moment, thinking.]

Sorry. Not when I'm in armor. You can do drills with me, if you want.

「Hmm. He tilts his head a little confused.」

Atem. My name is Atem.

「Seriously, like, dude why don't you know it, geez.」

Drills? You wanna make holes?

「He's not sorry.」

Hello, Atem.

[It's not a name he's heard before.]

No, not like that. Drills are....exercises, to help improve your combat skills.

「Coolest name, tho.」

Okay, we can do that if you want!

「No, Atem, he asked you first.

He approaches at him, going on the tip of his toes and asks in a bit of whisper.」

Will you also tell me the secret now?

[Ephemera cracks a smile.]

Sure. But you can't tell anybody, all right?

[He leans in a little.]

Found some chocolate. Whole stash of it.

「Atem nods, quite eager. And then, there is no reaction.」

What's that?

「Must be super important, tho...」

[Ephemera covers his mouth, hiding a smile.]

They don't have chocolate where you're from?

「Why you like dis...

He shakes his head.」

Nope.

[Endless cynicism and a weird sense of humor, that's why.]

Well. It's pretty much a form of currency in my world. People literally start wars over the stuff.

[He's teasing. A little.]

Like gold...?

「See him driving his little hand over that elaborated crown of his.」
