By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[Gren knows what a cat looks like when it's puffing itself up to look bigger and nastier than it is. And what he's looking at right now is basically the little elf child version of that-- a kitten trying to scare of a predator.]

Uh-huh. You sure tore up a lot of my shit all by your lonesome.

[She's got balls, though. Most kids would turn on the waterworks if they got caught by an adult. This definitely isn't her first B&E, not by a long shot, and there's something in Gren's old, shriveled heart that has some sympathy. Blah, blah he knows what it's like to be homeless or whatever.]

So. What's your name, kid?

[pocketspa]

[It's a blessing Taako can't be seen right now; he's all nerves, body tight as he barely shuffles his feet. He's not the attacker out of the two of them, he's barely a brawler- Lup's the one who does all the punching. He's much better at running away. But Lup's in trouble, so he keeps an ear trained to the conversation, gripping the shoe tighter.

As soon as it seems like it's gonna go south, he's going for the shins.]

I've got mad skill. So what.

[She spies Taako getting into place right out of the corner of her eye, just as the inquiry of her name comes up. For a moment, Lup's quiet, mouth pressed into a thin line, thinking a little too hard on her answer. But something in her face suddenly softens, like she's finally going to give up her real name, right before the corner of her lips are twitching upwards into a grin.

She just met the kid earlier that day. She can't waste this opportunity, even if Gren will call bullshit immediately.]

Angus McDonald.

[murderpotato]

[Angus goddamn McDonald, that doesn't even sound like a real name. That sounds like a fake name that somebody uses when they're trying to like rent a hotel room without anyone knowing about it. It could possibly be a pseudonym for a very particular sort of porn star. Gren snorts out an amused noise at the lie.]

You sure you don't want to fuckin' try that one again?

[Come on, kid, you gotta be better at lying than this.]

At least give me a name I can say with a fuckin' straight face.

[Lup can't help the way her smile goes even wider at that answer, like if she wasn't stuck in such a tense situation, she'd be laughing herself into tears all over it.

But Taako's there, already too close to the man, and the last thing she wants is to lose this guy's attention and have him look over to find her twin before they're ready. So Lup straightens her expression a little, puffs up her chest like she's not afraid of this guy, and gives him her first honest answer.]

Lup. [a beat] S'not like it matters.

[murderpotato]

[Oh, he sees it now. He sees the resemblance, the pale hair and give-'em-hell attitude that she'll actually be able to back up one day. Talking the talk before she's really got the skills to walk the walk out of necessity.]

[More murdercave bullshit. It doesn't really matter why there's a kid Lup standing in his house beyond that explanation.]

Guess it doesn't.

[He can't let on that he knows who she is, though. It'll just freak her out and be awkward as hell to try to explain. But if there's Lup, there must be Taako-- you can't have one without the other. They're basically attached at the hip.]

The other one can fuckin' come out already. You two ain't foolin' nobody.

[An educated guess; he doesn't actually know if Taako's there, he's just banking on probability.]

[pocketspa]

[Oh shit. Oh shit, he knows, they're boned. While an adult Taako would be much more cunning about this, knowing Lup could bluff her way out, the younger elf panics, and decides it's now or never. This guy has his sister out there! He has to do something!

So he comes running out of the closet, screaming, and goes directly for Gren's ankles with the boot. He'll save you Lup!!]

[restinglichface]

[Lup tries her hardest to not let surprise show on her face when the stranger calls out her out on the fact she isn't alone, but the girl's eyes dart quickly to Taako, where he's preparing to attack, before flicking back to Gren.

And then Taako's rushing with a scream at Gren and Lup is fast to follow, leaping from the dresser and rushing forward. Her cobbled together plan is to reach Taako just as he lays the smack down on the man, so she can grab his hand and the two of them can dart around him and escape. Can one heavy boot in the hands of a child take down a man like Gren?

Probably not.]

[Oh, good, this is a thing that's happening now. There's a tiny elf child running out of his closet with a shoe to... try to smack him in the knees? Probably? Oh, and Lup's getting in on the action, too. Great.]

[Taako reaches him first, probably to try to get at least one hit in on him before they bolt. He does manage to give Gren a pretty good swat on the leg with that boot, but it's a fucking boot so it's not a very good weapon. Gren grabs him by the shirt collar, taking up a fistful of fabric. Then he sort of pushes Taako a little bit to the side, putting him right in the path of his sister.]

[Two car pileup, featuring elf twins.]

[Everything falls to absolute pieces so, so quickly. With a winning dexterity score of a big ol' 9, he loses his feet out from under him and is effortlessly moved by Gren's tug, meaning it is a tiny limb collision feat. long eared children. Taako goes down in a heap and a shriek, but as soon as he can coordinate himself, he's reaching for Lup's hand in one, extending his other towards Gren.]

Don't you touch my sister!!!

[Lup manages an even worse roll (a stunning three), meaning neither twin stands a chance against Gren's shove and the resulting pileup of tangled children on the floor after. Lup falls backwards first when her brother crashes into her, giving Taako a little more cushion while she gets the breath knocked right out of her lungs.

It's only because Taako is there to grab her hand immediately that she's back on her feet as quickly as possibly, a little dizzy, but already shooting a fierce glare up at Gren.]

Don't come near us or I'll roast your ass!

[murderpotato]

Kid, if you could roast my ass, you would've done that already instead of having your idiot brother try to hit me in the fuckin' shins.

[Don't try to bullshit a bullshitter, Lup. You are definitely not good enough at it yet.]

[He's zero percent intimidated by either of these little shits. He was able to just knock them into each other to stop them, they're not exactly fighting in their weight class, here. And also apparently don't know shit about fighting?]

I ain't gonna hurt you unless you try something stupid. Fuck, you two are embarrassments. Don't you even know how to fuckin' fight? The fuck are you doin', trying to hit me with a fuckin' shoe?

[pocketspa]

[Tiny Taako still has not let go of that boot, btw. It's his boot now. If all else fails Gren is not getting that shoe back.]

We can fight! And I picked a boot cuz you didn't have any heels.

[You can stab people with heels! He's old enough to know that.]

Besides, my sister can make fire so don't mess with us!

[restinglichface]

Yeah! I can make fire, grandpa, so don't come any closer!

[To prove her point, Lup raises the hand that isn't wrapped up in Taako's and puts her full concentration into setting it ablaze...

But absolutely nothing happens. She blinks down at her palm, then up at Gren. Look at these misguided angels, Gren. Teach them.]

...Most of th' time it works, alright.
