By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[ How silly. That actually makes Rose smile a little more genuine, kind of amused. What a weird little girl. She's not like the other wolves. They do have fangs and would bite her without a second thought. It'd be to help toughen her up, sure, but... She's kind of grateful to avoid that for now. ]

No way. You guys too? What's going on here? Did someone kidnap us?

[ How had they even managed that? Humans weren't supposed to be able to spirt away yokai, it was the other way around. ]

We should find them and tell them off.

Maybe. Not sure why they'd wanna kidnap a bunch of kids, but... [her skinny shoulders shrug. Lup honestly doesn't have a better answer for it. The city feels like it's full of children, of all ages, just running loose without supervision. It's kind of awesome, besides, y'know, the whole not knowing how they'd ended up here thing.]

Will you bite 'em? [She says it with a grin, like she's hoping the answer is yes.] How about you chomp on 'em and I'll light 'em all on fire?

That'll teach those jerks.

[ Hm. It does seem kind of fishy, doesn't it? What use would a bunch of kids be... Well. Rose knows she's pretty strong, at least. And it seems like Lup knows what she's doing too, so. ]

Of course I will! [ The wolf barks back, grinning herself now. She's not curled up on herself anymore, ears standing tall and proud. ] And, woah, cool. You're a fire apparition?

[ She doesn't look like one, but... She wouldn't be the first to be an odd kind of yokai here. ]

[Being called a fire apparition leaves the girl giggling. She wishes.] I'm an elf! I've been studying magic with my brother. We're gonna be amazing wizards when we're older.

What're you? Not a human, that's for sure.

[Well, whatever she is, Lup's grinning that she's at least not looking quite as scared as she'd been. Whatever crap they've wound up in, together they can fight their way out of it.]

Woah! [ she suddenly exclaims. ] I've never met any magic users before. I mean, I can do stuff with ice. Sort of? But that's really cool.

[ Magic is cool. That's something Rose will never actually grow out of. Well. Except for lightning spells. ]

I'm a yokai! You've never seen one before? I guess most people wouldn't. That's kind of the point...

[It doesn't seem like Rose is too afraid of her anymore, so Lup closes a little more distance between them, smiling when she plops down closer.]

Yokai? Never heard of 'em. Must be real good at hidin' if humans aren't talkin' about you guys! [Humans, she's discovered, tend to let their mouths run on just about everything.]

Oh wow! I've never seen any ice magic before. Can you do some? I know that some wizards can do that kinda stuff, but fire's all I've got right now.

[ When the elf girl draws closer, Rose's tail curls around her a little tighter but that's about it. Not necessarily an indication of discomfort, just a reflexive gesture. She isn't used to having other people besides her packmates so close. ]

Humans talk about us all the time! But they think we're just stories. [ The stuff of legend and lore, an elder had said. ] I can try. It might not work so well here, but...

[ The little wolf's tongue sticks out in concentration as she places her palm to the ground. Lup's ears might pop as the energy around them shifts, a side effect of channeling her ki differently. But give it a moment and- Voila. A starburst of frost appears underneath her fingertips, vining out across the ground in beautiful, symmetrical patterns. ]

[The pop makes the elf jump in surprise, before her whole face is splitting into an excited grin, big eyes widening further at the beautiful magic splintering across the ground. She can't help the way her hand darts forward, fingertips just barely brushing against the starburst of frost. It's cold.

Lup draws her hand back with a laugh, chin tilting up to Rose now, beaming her way.] That's so cool! When I go t' magic school, I'm gonna learn evocation magic! Which is like, um, elemental stuff? Fire an' wind an' even ice! It takes a long time to learn, but I've already got fire down without any help, so that's gotta mean I'm a natural at it.

[To prove her point, the elf holds up a palm and narrows her eyes in concentration before a small flame flickers into life there.]

[ Ah. That's not a reaction that Rose has seen people usually give. Normally, when the chill settles into people's bones it causes them to shiver just as harsh in fright as cold. She watched her father use it a little to 'set the mood' before he devoured a man. It had made her cry, honestly, from how difficult it was to witness but-

She can't talk about that. ]

Wow, you are a natural! That's super cool. I bet you'll be the best fire wizard ever. Witch? I'm not sure what it's called.

Wizard, [Lup corrects with a smile as the flame in her hand disappears, the elf scooting another inch closer, watching Rosie excitedly.]

We should like, team up! A wizard an' a yokai as friends! We'd be unstoppable! Totally kick all the butts.

Wizard, okay, [ Rose corrects and confirms. Wizard. That's so cool. ]

Oh, hey, we totally would! We also got fire and ice, so. All our bases covered!

[ Well, no. But it seems to be a lot more covered than she's ued to with her single elemental power. ]

We can bust outta this weird place an' find our family. They gotta be out there somewhere, right? Gotta be lookin' for us...

Yeah, they gotta'! My mom's probably frantic. My dad's scary when he's mad, too, and I bet he's mad about me being gone...

I'm not supposed to leave. It's dangerous for me, I think.

I don't have any parents, but my brother's out there somewhere, wonderin' where I am. We'll find 'em.

But hey, don't worry, 'kay? I'll keep you safe.
