By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[ Drake is out feeding whatever kids will accept food from him -- which isn't terribly many, but he does feel like he's making some difference since they probably won't be able to come by much on their own. And he can't blame them for being wary, he knows that he certainly would be in this situation. Just wishes it was a little less dramatic.

He manages to convince the kid he's talking to to at least take a can of soup, but then he bolts, leaving Drake standing there with his bag and a vaguely frustrated expression. Thinking that maybe he should pack it in, when a different child actually approaches him for a change.

Oh. Uh oh. ]

Refugee camp? I don't, sorry. But maybe I can still help you... what's Holy Fire?

It's our church.

[ He looks wary at Drake, if only because he's an outsider. If he's never heard of their church that means he definitely won't be saved. Still, the fact that he's offering food reminds young R- of his mother, who keeps trying to make the world better in spite of the fact that she knows it won't do anything but slow the inevitable. ]

I can't find my mother.

[ Yeeeeeeah, should he just be telling these kids up front that their parents aren't here? If these were actual new arrivals he'd be honest, but this was... something else going on, something that was obviously happening to regular Hadriel inhabitants and therefore temporary. And they were mostly younger than Drake was used to dealing with. All perfectly good reasons to try and humor them. It's just not his style, though. ]

I'm pretty sure you're not going to. But you probably won't be here long, either.

No one is going to be here long. That's what the pastor says.

[ Are you unsettled yet, Drake? Ten is pretty young for that kind of attitude. He doesn't seem too scared though, as he looks around the surrounding area. ]

Does that mean we're being moved somewhere else?

[ ...yes, that's a bit unsettling. But Drake's never been religious himself and isn't comfortable judging that sort of thing. Even if it sounds a little rapture cult-ish. ]

No? You're already somewhere else. This is Hadriel.

Is that in Montana?

[ In his mind it's a legitimate question. How could he have gone somewhere far away without realizing it? Last thing he remembers is his mother telling his grandfather to leave them alone. ]

No, it's... another world. Which sounds crazy, I know, but whether you believe me or not it's the truth.

[ The kid stares at Drake like he's grown an extra head. He's not dumb, you don't just show up somewhere new. Not so easily. ]

It sounds fake. We're supposed to get a better world, not one that's like... like this.

[ The kid's getting a similar look back. This is definitely some rapture bullshit. ]

A better world? How's that supposed to work?

The pastor says we're all bad, that all we can do is destroy things. God is going to let us ruin the world so we can have a better one.

[ The words have the feeling of repetition, a child who has absorbed everything the adults around him have said and internalized it. This is the only thing he's ever known, it's all the faith he's been allowed and it is deeply woven into the idea that humans are terrible. ]

Well to me that sounds fake. Why would you deserve a better world if you ruined the one you had? Won't you just wreck that one too?

[ He's honestly asking. Where's the logic here? ]

Because he made us this way. This was in his plan. It's why he lets wars happen and people lose their families.

[ He's frowning at Drake. Why would he question this when it makes an awful sort of sense? ]

You really believe that? People do bad things because that's the plan, and they're going to be rewarded for hurting each other?

Why would we be punished for doing what we're supposed to do? Trying to act differently means we're just slowing down the sunset.

Knowing people are flawed is different from believing you're supposed to wreck things. Don't you have free will?

We're not supposed to listen to nonbelievers.

[ He takes a step back from Drake, frustrated because he can't find the right words to prove this is right. It's the truth, it's what he's been raised to know. He needs to find a way home, he has to get back before his dad notices he's gone. ]

That doesn't make any sense, either. Everyone's a nonbeliever until they hear something worth believing, right? So what is it that made you believe?
