By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[Lance bunches up the corner of his overshirt and closes his injured hand around it, hoping that'll stop the bleeding easily enough while he talks.]

Yeah, I'm human; there aren't any monsters around right now. It's safe.

[That seems like the most important thing to say first, although that all said he does add--]

It's okay, it isn't serious. My name is Lance; what's yours?

[Will watches him wrap the cut, curious. At least he was bleeding. That meant he probably wasn't a monster. And at least Lance admitted it? He knew his scalpel wasn't exactly a lot, and it certainly wasn't celestial bronze and damaging to monsters, but....it was all he could grab.]

Okay.

[He started to crawl out from under the desk, still holding his weapon.]

I'm Will.

[He looked around, making sure there really wasn't someone waiting to eat him and that Lance wasn't working with the monsters. Nope. So far so good....]

[Ah, it's Will. That makes sense. But Lance is pleased that he seems to believe him and is willing to come out from under the desk, and he watches Will look around before adding--]

It's nice to meet you, Will. There are monsters on the outskirts of the city, but usually not around here.

[Normally he wouldn't tell kids there are real monsters, at least not right away, but he thinks giving the truth is actually both the most believable and most reassuring thing he can do in this situation.]

Maybe not yet, but there will be. They'll come. It's probably not safe for you to be here with me. Unless you got a weapon?

[Will is glad he told him that there were monsters. He wouldn't have believed him if he told them there weren't any. Good call Lance.]

Do you have a better place we could hide?

They're a different kind of monster than you're used to, but I do have a weapon. It'll be okay.

[He's not too concerned about the issue of having to deal with any monsters right now, but he knows it'll be a different matter trying to convince Will of that.]

But you might feel safer at the Guard headquarters or the new Clinic; they're both still under construction, but there are a lot of people around who can also handle monsters if they need to.

[He really didn't have much of a choice, and if this adult knew about monsters and how to avoid them and be safe, that was something Will wanted to take him up on. He seemed pretty sure that they'd both be safe. He took a breath, and tried to relax. The suggestion about the Guard headquarters made him feel a whole lot safer.]

I think i'd like that.

[He gave the man a small smile and tried out his name.]

Lance.

[Lance smiles in return, trying to be reassuring through confidence; he's very sure they're safe right now, after all.]

The clinic and guard are right next to each other, and they aren't too far. I can lead you there.
