By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[she will make her mark on Westeros, though in the end, she may be remembered best for how she dies.

her world just finished a war right after Margaery was born. the fault lines that would eventually cause the War of the Five Kings are already there, though it takes until Margaery is twenty-one to begin in earnest.

she looks up, all wide-eyed innocence]

No, not at all. Ladies aren't allowed to take up arms, so I'll have to keep my dagger a secret. It's all right, though. I'm good at secrets.

Huh.

[That seems strange to him. He shrugs.]

Guess you'd have to be. But there's a lotta ways to fight. My sergeant was the one who taught me knives. Best goddamn knife fighter in the world. You woulda liked her. Don't think she would've known anything about being a queen, though.

[the part about ladies not being allowed to fight? it's true that there have been women warriors in Westeros' past, like Aegon the Conquerer's two sister-wives, but they're few and far between.

she nods] Keeping secrets will be very important for when I'm queen. And it's all right, being a queen is very complicated. What was your sergeant like?

She was beautiful. And she knew it, too. Always made sure she had her lipstick on, even when we were jumping into a combat zone.

[Ephemera's expression is fond and a little sad.]

Tough as they came, too. Taught me everything about being a soldier. Whenever we got into a bind, she'd be the one to figure a way out.

I can't imagine wearing lip tint while in the midst of battle! Do all ladies fight in your world?

[she looks up at him curiously]

She must be an incredible woman. Is she here?

Most of them do. Nearly everyone fights, where I'm from.

[Ephemera exhales slowly, then shakes his head.]

No. She died.

That must be a terrible trial. Grandmother told me stories of Robert's Rebellion, tens of thousands dying in a single battle. But for now, we're at peace.

[she blinks rapidly to avoid tears and reaches out hesitantly to touch his hand]

I'm very sorry to hear that, Ephemera.

[Ephemera almost mentions the planet killers in commiseration, but stops himself. No need for that. Instead he gives Margaery a small smile. She's a sharp kid. But kind, too, in her own way.]

Thanks. Enjoy that peace, yeah?

[she's sharp and she's kind and none of it will be enough to save her in the end]

I hope to? When I'm queen, I'll make the people love me. That should help keep the peace.

It'll help, [Ephemera agrees. He loved his captain and he would have followed CT anywhere.] Keep practicing with that knife, yeah? You'll get quick with it.

I hope to! Thank you for all of your help, Ephemera. [she hesitates a moment, then gives him a quick hug]

[The hug is unexpected. Ephemera blinks down at her, then - a little awkwardly - pats her on the shoulder.] Oh. You're welcome.

[congratulations, you have acquired a Margaery. she'll remember this even after she wakes up.

she gives the hug a tight squeeze he likely doesn't feel through his armor, lets go, and smiles brightly at him]

I can never repay you for all of your help, but should you ever be in need of aid, I will always be in your debt.
