By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[Jo frowns, wondering what that means. Have a lot of people showed up here today?]

Yeah! I'm looking for my mom.

And what does she look like? [ The young queen asks, trying to remember all she'd asked of the other children. ] What is her name?

[knifecollecting]

Um-

[Jo takes a moment to think about this.]

She has brown hair and she's tall, kind of like you. [...Everyone is tall to Jo, especially at this age.]

[lemontree]

[ Dany has never in her life been described as "tall," so that surprises a laugh out of her. ]

I see. [ Not really, but. ] And would you prefer to search for her alone, or with me?

[knifecollecting]

I'm going to find her whether you help or not. [Stubborn? Yes. That's a good word for Jo at this age.]

[lemontree]

Well, I'm happy to help. [ She adds lightly, lip twitching upward at the girl's reaction. ] But if you're bothered by my being here, then I can leave.

[knifecollecting]

[Jo takes a moment to consider the options.]

I guess you can help.

[lemontree]

All right. [ But how can she help? ] What kinds of places would your mother visit?

[knifecollecting]

[Jo gives this very serious thought.]

She likes to go to the grocery store! [Like might be exaggerating a little.]

[lemontree]

The grocery store? [ Ah. Well, they don't have that in Hadriel. Dany hesitates, thinking quickly. ] ... I think that they may... not be open today. Where else might she go?

[knifecollecting]

Oh, is it Sunday? [Jo goes quiet after the question, thinking hard again.]

We don't go a lot of places.

[lemontree]

Yes. [ Dany answers, not knowing how else to respond to this - frankly worrying situation. ]

I will ask those I know if they have met your mother. [ beat ] Would you like to move out of the sun in the meantime?

[knifecollecting]

[Jo squints up at the sky and considers her options. It's getting hot and she knows that if it's too hot she shouldn't be outside...]

Is there a library or something?

[lemontree]

There was. [ Not anymore, of course. ] It was-... It's no longer here.

[ Standing, that is. ]

[knifecollecting]

Oh. [Jo is quiet, thinking this over.]

Did it close?

[lemontree]

Yes. [ In a way. ] I imagine they will-... open it again some day.

[ Whoops: she almost said "rebuild." ]

[knifecollecting]

They might. [Jo nods, not really paying attention. Things close all the time. It happens.]
