By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[Ignis fidgets with the bottle for a few moments before he successfully opens it, and he takes a grateful few sips before he speaks again.

That is to say, he doesn't immediately speak. He flushes red across the tips of his ears and clears his throat, looking away from her.]

... I can't tell you that.

( ... Yeah, if you think she isn't going to bring this up with the adult version of this child, you're sorely mistaken. It's incredibly endearing to see the usually composed man she knows wasn't always so.

For now, though, Kate tips her head to one side. )

Why not?

[Ignis visibly cringes, as much as he tries to make it look very much like he is not doing just that. He clasps both hands around the water bottle and holds it to his chest, shaking his head.]

Because... I think I'm going to be in trouble.

[He looks at her, his eyes slightly widened, then straightens up and tenses his jaw a little.]

It's private.

( Yep. Endearing is the correct word for this. It's taking all of Kate's self-imposed strength to not break into a smile at this. )

Okay. Can respect that.

( Well. She's still curious, but she'll let it drop for the moment. )

What d'ya like to do in your free time, I- kid?

( It takes a great deal of effort to avoid using his name again, but she doesn't want to remind him of the question of why she knows his name. )

... Free time?

[At this age, Ignis is not entirely familiar with the concept of 'free time'. None of his time is really 'free', but rather either taken up with lessons, or training, or spending time with Noctis. The latter could be taken as free time, but given his current concerns, it doesn't immediately come to mind as such.]

I like reading.

[Because of course he does.]

( ...

Why isn't she surprised. )

Sound like my brother.

( He was the same at that age. She always had to drag him into doing something other than schoolwork and reading. )

He was a nerd.

( It's said with the greatest of fondness, though. More a compliment than anything. Still... it's not like Hadriel has a great deal of reading material, and after the Null's invasion, the library had been destroyed.

So, she's gonna have to think of something else. )

You scared of heights?

( She might have an answer for how to keep this kid busy a while. Maybe. )

... No...

[He says no, but he doesn't sound too sure. Ignis isn't scared of heights, but a relatively recent fall from a considerable one has made him a little wary of them. He looks at her with a puzzled expression, broken only by taking another small sip of water.]

... Why do you ask?

Got the best views in the city.

( Not necessarily on the clinic roof, but she can get them higher, no problem. )

Oh...

[There are a lot of tall buildings around, and the young boy had not-so-subtly scoped a few of them out on his way here.]

Alright.

( Follow her up to the roof, child. She'll make this an experience you won't forget. )

So, what's the king like?

( But first, she may as well keep him talking so he doesn't ask too many questions. )

[He looks at her sidelong as she asks the question, a small squint pinching his eyebrows together and tightening the corners of his eyes.]

He's the king. [He says bluntly, offering nothing further.]

He a good one? ( Ignis honestly.

But, once they're at the roof, Kate takes a look around at the paths she usually crosses, trying to determine which is the best to take when jumping around with a small child. )

[The boy nods once.]

Yes.

[Sorry, Kate, but you chose the wrong topic if you expected that one to get much conversation out of him. He looks around when they get to the roof, venturing to the edge to lean over and look down.]

It isn't very high.

( Well, most of her other topics would result in Ignis asking how she knows that, so she's a little screwed. Thankfully, there's less need for small talk now they're up here. )

Not here, but... ( She nods over at the taller building she was scoping out. ) We can get over there.

( Gods help her if he was anyone else she wouldn't be trying and failing this hard. )
