Event Log: The Hope of a Child

By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[ He makes a soft noise of surprise ]

But sixteen is still just a baby! Cano thoughts you were the same age as me!

[she shakes her head]

No, I'm eight years old! Our worlds must be very different.

[childofthemusic]

Whooaaaaaaa.

[ He shakes his head ]

That's so strange! When Cano was eight I wasn't even allowed to go outside by myself.

[ Mainly because at that age he would toddle off whenever he heard something interesting and fall asleep in random places ]

[she giggles]

I'm not allowed to go outside by myself, either. A daughter of House Tyrell would fetch a large ransom, so there are always Septas and household knights accompanying me.

[Margaery would lose herself in the gardens or one of the hedge mazes for hours if left to her own devices, but she's got to learn everything a queen needs to know]

What's a ransom? [ He asks curiously ]

And a septas?

A ransom is what happens when somebody abducts a member of the nobility. They ask for payment in exchange for their safe return.

A Septa is a woman who's sworn herself to the Faith of the Seven. She's never to marry or bear children. Instead, she serves the gods.

[childofthemusic]

Oooh, that sounds very mean.

[ He frowns ] But why can't she marry if she wants to?

[roseofthetyrells]

It is. There are brigands everywhere, even in the Reach.

[she considers] Well. . . she's sworn to the gods. No mortal man may touch her.

[childofthemusic]

Sounds weird.

[ He opinions ]

Cano thinks it would be a shame if a lot of ladies did that because then we wouldn't have enough mothers!

Grandmother says that poverty drives men to desperate acts. Which is why there's such an emphasis on acts of charity in Highgarden.

[it's a normal fact of Westerosi life, unfortunately.

she laughs delightedly] There are more than enough mothers! Very few women choose to become Septas. Most of them are younger daughters given to the Faith.

[childofthemusic]

Poverty? [ He blinks a little - it's not a word he knows ]

But if they're given, they didn't choose it? What if they chose different when they grow up?

[roseofthetyrells]

Yes. The poor? [she looks a little confused]

No, they didn't choose it. And it happens. But then, the woman must pay the Faith back for the resources it used in raising her. Most simply run away. Not that I blame them. Being a Septa sound awful.

[childofthemusic]

But... don't them have a place like... [ He wrinkles his nose as he looks for the right words ]

Like... grandfather Finwe... he sets aside a portion for those whose harvests went bad, and things like that. Doesn't anyone help them?

[- He considers that ]

Well, s'only fair if they pay them back. [ He judges ] But s'not fair if they make 'em stay when they don't want to either!

Of course we help them! House Tyrell has always prided itself on being good stewards of the land and those who farm it.

Grandmother says that little about the Faith is fair. The High Septon lives in splendor while his Septons and Septas are expected to live simply. And they say that in King's Landing, the blessings of the Seven can be bought with gold.

[childofthemusic]

That's good then! But why do they rob people, if they get looked after properly?

[ He frowns ]

That all sounds really not right.

[roseofthetyrells]

Grandmother says that it's because some people always want more than what is given.

[she nods]

I don't think it sounds right, either. Perhaps when I'm queen, I'll be able to do something about it?

[childofthemusic]

Those people should be scolded. [ He says with the sage wisdom of young children everywhere ] That's very rude behaviour.

[ He gasps ]

Are you a princess?

[roseofthetyrells]

It is. Father has the right to dispense justice in Highgarden and the Reach, so he takes care of it.

[she giggles]

No. At least, not yet. Father is determined that I marry Prince Joffrey. He's only a little younger than me, so it would be a good match.

[childofthemusic]

Is your atto the king then? Or one of his counsellors?

[ He ooohs ]

But, you's still little - what if you grows up and the match is a bad one?

[roseofthetyrells]

He's Lord of Highgarden and Warden of the South. That means he overseas both the Reach and Dorne.

[she hadn't really considered that]

I suppose we. . . endure? Kings take mistresses all the time, but a queen must be more careful. That's what grandmother says, anyway.

[childofthemusic]

[ he shakes his head, eyes wide with distress for her ]

That's no good! You'd be so unhappy. You should marry someone you love@

Love, if it comes, comes after marriage, not before. As a daughter of House Tyrell, I have a duty to make the most advantageous match possible.

[childofthemusic]

[ He's clearly upset by this ]

That's not right! What if you hate each other? You should be happy!

[roseofthetyrells]

[she reaches out to squeeze his hand soothingly]

I will be, once I'm queen. And I'll find ways to make myself happy. [she whispers] Grandmother says that Queen Cersei hates King Robert.

[childofthemusic]

[ He throws his arms around her neck in clear unhappiness ]

You shouldn't have to! It's coz grandpa married Lady Indis that atto is so unhappy all the time! It's not safe to have another husband.
