By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

( when the boy surfaces, there's no mistaking that 'do, of course. this was definitely atem. thankfully, akira had already run into a few of the children by now.

so that he could keep his expression void of any surprise. )

You scared away all the fish.

[puzzlingly]

「There are more important matters at hand than fish! Besides...」

You don't wanna eat that. They taste terrible.

「Yep.」

What wrong with your eyes?

( there's another glance at the water. pour one out for the meal he had been planning on tonight. thanks, kid. )

My eyes? ( having reeled in his line, akira set his rod to lean on the ground, waving his own free hand in front of himself. ) They seem to be working okay.

( maybe he's deliberately being obtuse... )

[puzzlingly]

「He's being difficult huh?

Atem approaches a little more, sticking out head out of the water completely.」

What are those... 「He makes little circles with his thumbs and indexes, as "ok" sings and places them over his own eyes.」 Things...?

( h e h.
he almost laughs at the gesture. it's a little hard not to, but akira just moves to adjust the arms of his specs instead. )

You mean my glasses?

[puzzlingly]

「Glasses, he says, but he's never seen glass so transparent, it usually was blue, and made in the shape of vases.
They held perfume and wine and...

He just nods.」

What are they for?

To help me see. ( had this guy never seen glasses before? akira had always had reason to believe that something was different with atem, that hair being a dead giveaway from the start, but he couldn't help but cock his head slightly to the side.

the truth was, he didn't really need them. not REALLY really like some people did, but he wasn't— he couldn't let some kid pick apart his guise. )

They can magnify things far away, or close up, to make it easier for people with poor eyesight.

[puzzlingly]

「Oh no, the guy is blind! ... Nope that's not what he said but it's certainly what Atem thinks. At least he doesn't say it out loud! He merely peels his eyes for a moment and then proceeds to observe him thoroughly.」

How old are you?

「Yep, of course, this guy must be ancient if he was having problems with his eyes! Just like some old people he knew.」

[jocoeur]

Well— ( he pinches his chin, giving the impression that he has to think it over long and hard before he finally answers. )

I'm almost a senior. ( ... in high school. )

[puzzlingly]

「Of course, that sounds like a million years old. But he doesn't really look that old with is hair being so black. Why is he so confusing!?

He squints now, something is up.」

You're lying...

「He's got no wrinkles!」

[jocoeur]

No way. ( it's not a lie, after all.
oh but he is having fun with this. you wouldn't know it from that blank expression he's still wearing though, that betrays nothing. )

It's not polite to question your elders, you know.

[puzzlingly]

「Aw man, Atem definitely sinks a little into the water at the reprimand, it is something an old person would say.」

But you're not my elder.

「That makes sense ok, ok.」

[jocoeur]

I'm not? ( ever so slightly, that stoic expression changes... a smile seems to curl at the corners of akira's lips.
he was the last person to bow to the authority of 'elders' after all. and it seems like he's not even questioning atem's statement. he just... rolling with it. )

In that case... ( off comes his blazer first, then the unbuttoning of his school shirt... )

[puzzlingly]

「What in the whatting what of the whats is he doing!? His clothes are so odd tho, he might be all defensive but can't help but stare at him fiddling with the little things in his... robe?」

[jocoeur]

( that's right, atem. be afraid. be very afraid. once he's mostly dis-robed, aside from his shorts at least, the glare from the suns above obscure the look in his eyes one last time, before he removes his glasses and sets them down with the rest of his things.

then, he rubs his hands together.
then, he starts to jog.
then, it becomes a full-blown sprint.
then! he's! launching himself into the air??
then he's gliding, tucking first, then spreading his arms out in a show-y display, hitting the water in a glorious swan-dive!!!

it has to be a 7/10 for that performance, at least. )

[puzzlingly]

「What is this guy doing!? It's like a ritual of some sort? Oh no, no, no! Is he gonna--?!

Yes he did.

Little time does Atem have to swim out of the way if he doesn't want to be squished by this blind weirdo!

You just come out, dude, gonna get splashed right in the face!

Huh, if he comes out, where did he go?」

[jocoeur]

( he's ready for it.
when he does finally emerge, in an equally "stylized" flourish in the water, a big splash of his own comes with it. he owes you, kid. )

[puzzlingly]

「Atem watches him emerge and that has to be the most funny thing he's ever seen. He laughs, loud and clear as he still splashes his face.」

You're so silly! Do it again!

[jocoeur]

Hey, you first. ( he takes the splash with grace, chuckling a little bit and... actually enjoying himself. it had been some time since akira had just let his hair down like this... )

Go on, show me what you've got!

[puzzlingly]

「He doesn't need to tell him twice, there goes the child, swimming back to the edge, and once out, he tries to mimic Akira. But you know what, that's very difficult and he just kind of jumps into the water splashing everything around again, yeah.

Oh, but it's not over, when he emerges, he makes a very characteristic pose... his hands together over his head, and his head moving side to side, you know, very... Egyptian and all.」

Tada!

[jocoeur]

Oooooh. ( there's an applause at the flair, he definitely approves the use of original moves. )

7.5, I'd say. Extra points for creativity.

「He laughs, but oh dear, how dare!」

Hey...! That deserved at least a ten!

( there's a bobbing of his head. ) The take off could use some work, don't you think? There's always things we can improve upon.

「He looks back as if he were seeing himself do the whole thing again. Then he nods to himself.」

You're right, will you teach me?

( treading water, akira sinks just a little below the surface as atem looks back to the shore... and with the reply that comes with it— he can feel it. the familiar tingle of something in his chest. an otherwordly voice in the back of his mind...

he seemed to be... momentarily spaced out...
but after a moment blinks himself back to reality, and flashes atem a grin.

so, forming bonds with others was possible in this world too...?
he seems... happy. bright. ) Yeah. Let's do it.
