By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

「It's not like him to go hugging random people around, but he did and now he's gotta deal with it. He didn't expect to feel so lonely after just having lost his father, and finding himself in a complete unknown place, she's been so far the first to offer him that he longs for. He clings to her only for so long until he realizes he might be the wrong thing to do. Often... he doesn't see it. Often he just does what he wants, but now he cannot go around doing just what he wants, not anymore.」

「He doesn't dare to look up at her.」

[restinglichface]

[To her credit, Lup doesn't pull away from the way he clings to her, her hand just patting gently at his back for as long as Atem needs to clean.]

S'cool. What's your name, anyway? I'm Lup.

[puzzlingly]

「He's still embarrassed, of course, this is so not like he should be behaving.」

Phara-- I mean, Atem, just Atem.

「He might as well stop playing king anyway.」

...Why... are your ears so big anyway?

「This time he asks shyly, truly curious.」

[restinglichface]

Cause I'm an elf, you nerd. Why're yours so short and round? Doesn't that make your hearin' not so great?

[puzzlingly]

Because... I'm human...?

「Yeah, right? He says as he touches his own ears.」

And I can hear you just fine.

「At least he thinks so!」

Where is your brother? Is he safe being alone?

「Maybe... they should go look for him.」

[restinglichface]

[It drags a smile out of the girl, because duh, of course he is. She was just giving him crap.]

Bet I can still hear better tho.

[The mention of her brother leaves a frown tugging at her lips. She's been trying to not worry about it, but it has been a long time since she'd seen Taako running around...]

He's fine. We can take care of each other. [But there's not much taking care of each other when they aren't together. Crap.] I should go find him.

[puzzlingly]

「No one ever gives him crap! This is new. But he gives her a little nod. She definitely might have better hearing than him.」

Like a hare...

「He means no... harm. Hares are cute.」

I'll help you find him.

「He says rather quickly. Please don't leave him alone?」

[restinglichface]

Really? [Lup gives the strange boy a look, like she doesn't quite believe him.]

Why? What do you get out of helping me?

[puzzlingly]

I don't wanna be alone.

「He could go on an say something different, something a little less selfish, but it wouldn't be the truth.」

[restinglichface]

[His honesty is enough.]

Fine. You can come along. But if my brother an' me get into a fight, you gotta take my side. Got it?

[Just in case, ok. She wants to win.]

[puzzlingly]

「He nods, rapidly-- but then...」

Why would you fight your brother?

「That sounds so mean!」

[restinglichface]

Not on purpose, goobus. Just, y'know, if we can't decide on crap. You gotta put your vote on my side so I win.

[puzzlingly]

「What is a goobus...?」

All right. I'll try. But don't fight too much.

[restinglichface]

[She snorts before grabbing his arm and dragging him forward.]

We're twins! We never do.

[Mostly]

[puzzlingly]

「Oh, he's being grabbed, oh, he likes this.」

What's that?

[restinglichface]

What's what? A twin? You don't know what'a twin is?

[puzzlingly]

Nope.

「What? He's never heard the term before! Ironic, that, because his dad and his uncle were kind of twins. Not identical at least, but no one talks about that, ever. It'd just bring problems, (who should have been pharaoh, whose son is the rightful heir and what not), we don't want that kind of issues brought up in our perfect kingdom, okay? Hardly perfect at the moment, if he keeps stuck in here.」

[restinglichface]

Oh. [That just seems so fake to Lup, but she can't imagine a world where she doesn't have Taako.]

A twin is like, uh. He's my brother, but we're the same. But we're different. We were born at the same time an' we look exactly alike an' so we're the same.

[puzzlingly]

「Oh, that makes much more sense, but it also sounds a bit weird.」

Oh, bothers! 「The same but different...」 And you look exactly alike? How's that like?

[restinglichface]

I'unno. I've never not had a twin before, so I'm not sure how to compare to what it isn't like. [It's just what she knows, the one solid thing in her life.]

I guess it's kinda like being the same kid together? Like, we're not the same, he's smarter an' I'm tougher, but when we're together, we make up one person. When we pretend to be one kid, it's like that's how we're supposed to be.

[puzzlingly]

「That sounds absolutely marvelous, it'd be great to have a twin! He wouldn't feel so alone, maybe.」

That's neat... And you parents? Where are they?

[restinglichface]

I'unno. Don't have 'em. They ran away when we were too small to remember. [She doesn't say it coldly or sadly. It's just fact.]

Uncle said twin elves are cursed, so they didn't want us. [No one did.]

[puzzlingly]

「She might not get sad at the fact, but Atem does, for them. He can't remember his mother, but his dad, being all he had, he cannot imagine how it'd be if he had abandoned him.」

Cursed... how?

「Now, mind you, he does come from a place where curses are so very real, she seems nice but...」

[restinglichface]

[She shrugs her skinny shoulders, facing him and speaking with a surprising amount of earnestness for a child her age.]

No one ever told us. Just said they were. It's why no one wanted us around. So we left on our own.

[puzzlingly]

「It is after a moment of deliberation that he gives her a nod.」

... I do want to be around you.

「But, he had made that clear, hadn't he? What's the worst that could happen?」
