By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[Michael will let this kiddo's thoughts on communism slide. He doesn't have much of an opinion himself, anyway.]

You can do anything you want, but within reason. You can't just punch people or anything. But you can take what you want from the stores, for example. And unless a door is locked, you're probably allowed inside.

[He sure hopes everyone keeps their apartment doors locked.]

We do have an arcade, too. [An arcade that's located in the same building as a bar and a casino. After he just told Harlan he can essentially do whatever. Fantastic. He's just gonna have to hope that little HH is more interested in Dig-Dug than beer and poker.]

I'm sure we can find you a stool or something.

[Michael redirects them toward the speakeasy.]

Oh man, it's been forever since I got to go to an arcade. What games are there? Do you got Zaxxon? Or Moon Patrol? Or Castlevania? I haven't got to play it yet 'cause it's new.

[He's not sure where Michael is taking him, but he's not taking him quickly enough!! He charges ahead, yanking at Michael's hand in the process. hURRY UP, YOU ADULT WITH YOUR LONG LEGS.

He doesn't let go of Michael's hand, though. David is now soulbound to Michael.]

Are they free too like all the stuff in the stores? I think I maybe got a quarter...

[He's fishing in his pockets now, but mostly is tugging Michael along, his backpack bouncing all over the place.]

[Wow, okay, Michael only knows what one of those things are, and he thought it was a playstation game. He thinks for a minute while he tries to pick up the pace and keep Harlan from dragging his arm off.]

Uh, I'm not sure what games they have. I don't think I caught the titles. They might be all new ones, though, since this place doesn't tend to have stuff that people recognize.

[He guesses if all else fails he can show him the pong and pac man apps on the phone. Which he himself has definitely not wasted countless hours on, no sir.]

They're free though, yeah. No quarters needed.

[God, okay, he's just going to take a moment and appreciate that this is fucking adorable. Harlan is so excited about this arcade situation, more than he was about having a backpack full of candy or throwing rocks at strangers. Speaking of which, this enthusiasm is promising that he'll drop that idea entirely. Thank you, gods. Or whoever.]

[Listen Castlevania doesn't actually exist as a cabinet but David has heard kids talking about it at school and just assumes? If it's for a console, he can't play it, so this is wishful thinking. Maybe someday he'll get his hands on a NES, but for now, it's arcades all the way down.]

I hope they got Zaxxon at least. That's my favorite. New stuff is good too but I bet I can beat the high score if they got Zaxxon.

[More wishful thinking. He's been trying to get on the high score table for Zaxxon back home for forever, but some jerk named DIK keeps shutting him out.]

Wow, really? [He is momentarily stunned in overjoyed disbelief but then he starts right up again. Gotta go fast!!] This place is awesome. Do you get to live here all the time? You should let me come home with you so I can live here too. Just tell my mom some stranger put me in a van 'cause I wanted to pet his dog. People do that sometimes, you know. I heard about it.

[Michael is experiencing some mood whiplash here as Harlan is adorable one second and then talking about how Michael should tell everyone he got kidnapped in the next. Dear god child let him rest. He has a feeling that's a slim chance, though.]

You can probably get the high score on any of them, honestly. I don't know that the people around here are really a "gamer" crowd.

[Half of them don't even know what a lightbulb is, so.]

And uh, sure. You can come home with me after.

[That stops David in his tracks. He wasn't expecting this adult to just agree to kidnap him. This is the best day...]

Really? Awesome! Hey, what's your name, anyway? I'm David.

[David. Fuck. That's right, Harlan changed his name. So David, that's- god. Once again he has to struggle to keep his face straight.]

Uh, Michael. Nice to meet you, David.

[Because this is the first time he's met him, kind of.]

[He tilts his head to one side.]

Michael. Okay, I'll call you that. Most adults say I gotta call 'em something like Mr. Whatever. You're not really good at being an adult, huh?

[Nice to meet you too.

Buuut he doesn't seem to care that much, since he's tugging Michael off toward the arcade again. Probably? He's not sure where it is, but this is the direction they were going in before. He trusts Michael to lead them to the arcade eventually.]
