By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

Yeah, that's true. They need attention and love, just like anything else.

[Which is why Adam never really had a pet before, either - he just didn't have time to take care of one properly.]

I'm sure you can when you're older. Your dad sounds smart.

I hope so! I'll try to practice being a good pet owner on your pets by, uhm, giving them attention and stuff.

[And as they approach Adam's house, it's clearly true - a dog comes running out to meet them, clearly overjoyed. He's polite, though, or at least well-trained, and doesn't jump on Alphys, just sniffing her instead.]

This is Aspen.

[She does let out an eep as the dog comes charging, but when it doesn't look like it's going to eat her, extends a hand with an experimental pat pat on the head.]

H-Hi Aspen! I'm Alphys. It's nice to meet you, and uhm, thanks for letting me stay with you.

[At least she's polite. Even if she just keeps giving head pats.]

[He actually seems delighted with the head pats, tail wagging wildly. He tends to like whoever Adam likes.]

I'm sure he'll like having someone else around for a little while. He always wants someone to play with. Just throw a stick, or run around with him a little, and he'll be happy.

[She nods fervently, continuing her pat pat pat.]

Okay! I think he can run, uhm, f-faster than me, but I'll do my best.

[Maybe the Surface won't be so bad after all, if humans are like this.

Maybe it'll be better than she feared.]

[With the dog already nudging at her, Alphys does not have to be told twice. She giggles, letting herself be chased inside to safety.
