Event Log: The Beach Episode

Who: Everyone!
What: The event log for the transition to our new planet!
Where: The city, which has now been fragmented onto four separate islands.
When: May 27th-June 10th
Warnings: Surf's up! If by 'surf', you mean separation from your friends, weird sea creatures, and cold rainfall.

The sun and the sand and a drink in your hand- well, it all sounded pretty nice when you voted for the island planet, but ultimately what you're getting is a bit less glamorous.

The transition takes place instantaneously, with very little noteworthy shakeup, though those of you who are particularly in-tune with the supernatural may feel a bit dizzied or nauseated by the sudden movement. And that's exactly what it is: for those of you who are outside, the change is fairly noticeable, as in the span of a single blink, what used to be miles of desert is now rocky ocean. The city is simply in one place one moment, and then somewhere entirely new a second later.

And that somewhere new is exciting! The islands have plenty of landscape to explore and weather conditions to adjust to, fish to catch, and- wait, how do you get to the other islands? What if your friends or your home or the bar is on these other islands? Enjoy having to figure out who is where and how you're going to get by with only a small fraction of the city to work off of- hopefully those boats will come sooner rather than later...

[Have an abrupt topic switch. But talking about the weather and her abilities are two things she's not interested in continuing on with.]

The timing wasn't very good since you asked right when those buildings were all being fixed up. And now I'm not sure what we'll find here. I think I'll probably just end up announcing some starting fights to the network - and if I mention we could use a pole, maybe someone will come up with one. Unless you've seen anything?

[well, that was a good distraction]

Maybe we just take one from a house no one's using? Sure, it'll fuck up their plumbing when someone moves in later, but that's a problem for tomorrow. After I have my pole. And how many people do you think are gonna go for it?

[Right, right, maybe something like the pipe for a shower, that would be long and straight. She's not sure if she has the tools to get at one easily without damaging it but she knows someone who probably does. How much does she want to lean on Law's abilities to disassemble things?

Eh, she can pay him back if he complains. Okay. Good plan.]

I'll get your pole somehow. And I'll have a headcount after I put up the public notice, but - have you met that woman who calls herself Boss? She seemed excited about it. And there were a few others. It might only be something like two matches the first night, but it we're lucky, word will spread once they all have a good time with it.

[exactly! a shower pipe would work just fine. and do it, lean on him. that's what men are there for]

Thanks. And I can't say that I have. Of course, I haven't been here long. And this island thing isn't gonna help me meet new people. And, they'll have a good time. Who doesn't love a good fight?

[He's been very good at caving to her requests so far! What a helpful guy.]

Oh, you're - you're probably stuck here, aren't you? No magic, and a lot of cold, cold water. I wonder how many islands there are? And I wonder where the colosseum even ended up?

[It's okay, she'll get to exploring soon after this.]

[but guys always disappoint you in the end]

Yeah, I'm stuck and I never could swim worth a damn. And, I have no idea. I did a little exploring earlier and thought I could see an island in the distance.

Right, when the clouds lift you can just see one to the south there - watch for the spire of the temple.

[She points. The fog makes it hard to make out, but it's there.]

It's not quite a mile off, maybe less. Really hard to say with this weather. But that's one of the temples from the city, so buildings must have ended up in all sorts of different places.

[she does as she's told and then---]

I can see it! Huh. I wonder which temple it is.

This is really going to suck with all of us so spread out. I'm just lucky I was at home when the move happened.

Which is what, this island? Have you seen where the colosseum ended up yet?

[Probably not, she assumes, since it hasn't been all that long. If it was close, they ought to be able to see its crumbling stone walls from here. Ugh, that means both spectators and fighters might have to get ferried around to wherever it ended up.]

Yeah, I'm in one of the Spires here. And I haven't. I did do a little exploring and found Rage's temple, Confusion's temple, the Park, and the Sewing Shop. People actually still sew?

[it's beginning to look that way. the gods don't like to make anything easy on anyone]

Of course they still sew, if they can't cast. And even some of the magically-inclined tailors still find some of their work is best done by hand.

[An odd thing to ask about, really. Caedra wouldn't have assumed clothing could be made any other way, and everyone is clothed here. The false gods do provide some clothing but most of it is unflattering and made of poor material compared to what she's used to.]

Did you expect something else? Is clothing made some other way, where you come from?

[she's used to the stores of London and what they had to offer. the idea of making clothes by hand is completely weird to her. it sounds like Amish people]

Yeah, it's made by five year olds in China or Bangladesh or some other country. And you take the Underground to the stores you like and buy it there.

Well, then someone is still making the clothing, just not you. I can't imagine children are any good at sewing, though. No wonder everyone dresses so poorly.

[Seriously if you're going to use slave labor to do menial tasks at least make sure you get people who are suited for it. Children aren't much good for anything.]

You know, come to think of it, there aren't many children here. I guess even the parasites-in-charge don't want them around. Wonder what that means for the few who are here.

Nah, no one hand-sews anything. It's all done on machines.

[children come cheaper and are more easily replaced]

That they got very, very, very unlucky.

Machines - you mean a loom? That's still handmade work though, as I see it. Unless you mean something like... like the phones? But able to make clothing?

[Whaaaat is this crazy world she comes from? Making a strange device that can then make clothes seems like an awful lot of work compared to just making the clothes and not bothering with the middle step.]

Yeah, I mean something like the phones. Only bigger and noisier and more likely to chop an arm off.

[21st century Earth. 2004 to be exact. and between the machines and the kids, they make clothing really cheap]

As much as I would probably value a creation that is large and noisy and capable of removing limbs, I don't think it would be my first choice when designing something to make my clothing. But I have to say, should I ever get to see your world, it sounds like it will certainly be educational.

[And she hopes she does get to. That is absolutely the biggest upside of this place - knowledge of just how much variety is out there in the multiverse. If the Abyss truly wants to reclaim all of these worlds then they have their work cut out for them, but there is plenty of time for that, and she looks forward to the thousands upon thousands of years of bloodshed that will result.]

Yeah? You like yours custom made? I never had the money for that. And I don't know if you'd like it or not. It has its upsides, but it definitely has its downsides, too.

[best not to mention any of that to Jane. she'd be horrified. she may have a cynical view of most of humanity, but she definitely would not be okay with her world being plunged into bloody chaos]

Of course. I have servants at home. All of my clothes are perfectly tailored.

[And they are truly servants, too, not slaves. They work willingly, proud of their craftsmanship. It's something that tends to surprise mortals fairly often when they learn of it - demons, or at least the tanar'ri, her race, have passion. They have interests and skills and it's not unusual for some of them to turn to the arts as a pastime, or as a way to make themselves useful to those who might otherwise kill them.]

Jeez. This must be a step down for you. How much money do you have?

[because of course she assumes it's money. she gets the feeling that Caedra's different, the black eyes are proof enough of that, but Jane figures that she must be from another planet, not be from an entirely different plane of existence]

More than I could ever actually use. I guess I'm just lucky enough to not have to think about it. That's the benefit of marrying rich. So yeah, this place... It's a little peasant-y for my tastes.

[It's fine, Caedra is perfectly happy to let the girl assume money is how she gets what she wants, rather than something utterly useless to her.]

[Jane lets out a low whistle] Must be nice. How'd you snag your husband? [she laughs] It's a bit peasant-y for my tastes and I grew up in a shithole.

[the truth. but she made good money as a stripper. she's young, she's beautiful, and she knows how to make a man feel like she's into him. all of that led to raking in the cash]

He snagged me. True love sees across class divides or something? I can't complain, anyway.

[Caedra has told so many false versions of her own relationship now that if ever anyone talks to each other about it they'd be very confused - but why would they? It's none of their business anyway.]

Does he have a brother?

[she would be one to gossip about the lives of others, but right now she doesn't have anyone to gossip to]

You know, I actually don't know if he does or not. It never came up. It's less strange than you might think, though. I know he moved far from home when he was fairly young and made some profitable investments. Maybe there's bad blood of some sort.

[Pure 100% patented Caedra bullshit there but it sounds believable, and she has no trouble making it up on the fly.]
