What: The intro log for August

As you wake up on the sand of the colosseum, gazing up at cloudy gray skies, you might wonder what you're doing here. Where are you? How did you get here? You'll figure it all out soon enough, so try to clamp down on that rising panic, or you just might end up in a dangerous situation.
Because, of course, you're not the only thing that arrived. The Door has also chosen to pull in some rust monsters. These monsters may look a bit like insects, but they're much larger, with a rather vicious bite. You can fight them, but be careful - anything metal that touches them instantly begins to corrode. Your sword, a bullet from your gun, even your robot friend. Might want to keep a little distance.
And that's not all. Scattered across the ground of the colosseum can be found a variety of unique and delightful musical instruments. If you're the musical sort, maybe you can figure out how to play one - or maybe you already know. Hopefully no rust monster has wandered too close to the one you want to try, or you might find that it's missing important metal bits.
Once you've found a way to express the song in your heart, feel free to leave whatever bit of safety you've found. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers August 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[Oh good, she thinks it's a goofy name too. Now he doesn't feel so bad. Not that he did before, but hey.]
Honestly I'm totally picturing this guy as some kinda robot, or a giant brain in a floating jar. What's this guy like?
no subject
[she thinks it's a entirely bad codename, even though it's considered an honor on his homeworld]
He's Coluan, so he has green skin. He also has a twelfth-level intellect, which is as high as the measurements go. Most people are a six. I'm a nine, which isn't bad for an ordinary person. But, Brainy is. . . kind of frustrating. He's so smart he doesn't know how to actually talk to people.
no subject
[Nerd planet, how adorable]
Kinda lacking in the social skills department, huh? How do you determine intellect on a scale like that, bunch of testing or something?
no subject
[it's true. all Coluans are nerds. and bad at socializing]
Absolutely. He hates going on missions, hates it when we interrupt him in his lab and thinks that he's smarter than all of us and the worst part is, he's right. And, yeah, there are tests, mostly math, chemistry, and physics. Everyone takes them when they're thirteen.
no subject
That doesn't sound too bad, those are three of my best subjects. That still sounds a little young to be issuing tests like that, though. At least for humans, anyway.
no subject
[and her mother knows exactly how to push all of Tinya's buttons]
Most people complete their formal schooling by then, then they can go on to higher learning. The test wasn't bad, just time-consuming.

Ned ended up being a huge help, so I can't really complain about him finding out. May though, I know why she was upset. I mean aside from her nephew swingin' around town doing dangerous stuff all the time. We'd lost my uncle a little before that, so she was especially like... not thrilled.
[but that's not his favorite subject like all this nerd shit is.]
Jeez though. We don't usually finish high school until around eighteenish. Do you guys have like computer brain implants in the future or something?
no subject
That's good. It's always nice to have someone to rely on. [and at the news of Peter's uncle's death, she raises a hand to her mouth briefly] Oh. I'm sorry. She must've been really worried that she'd lose you, too. That's--well, it's understandable.
[yes, nerd shit is much better, much less of a chance of wandering into an emotional minefield]
No, it's that the average school goes year round and we start the more difficult subjects at an early age. For some reason, it's easier to understand theoretical physics as a younger age.
no subject
Yeah, well. I can't say she didn't have good reason.
[Yeaaaah he seems content to leave it at that]
Year round? You don't even give the kids summer off? Wow, yeah, I can see how they'd be able to plow through school pretty quickly, then.
no subject
and that's fair]
I went to a private school. The competition there was pretty intense. We were all the children of diplomats or other United Planets bigshots, so how we did was seen as a reflection on our parents. I did very well. [her voice turns a little bitter] Mother wouldn't have it any other way.
no subject
Whoof, your school sounds like a nightmare. Kinda sounds like your mom isn't too fun to deal with, either.
no subject
It was intense. [she allows] Both academically and socially. Everyone was very aware of what their place in the order of things was. [she bites her lip and looks down for a moment] My mother . . . is very intense. Only the best for her. She didn't approve of me joining the Legion. And she really didn't approve of my boyfriend.
no subject
Did she not like you doing the Legion thing because it was dangerous, or because she thought it would reflect badly on her somehow?
no subject
Both, actually. And to be fair, on our first big mission, someone died. But the way she saw it, everything I did was a reflection on her. I was "wasting my time" on the Legion? It made her look bad to the other delegates. I chose to date a Rimborian? I was throwing myself away on gutter trash. Being her daughter. . . wasn't easy.
no subject
I don't really have the same sort of parent experience as other people, but good on you for doing your own thing. It's your life, not hers.
no subject
[the mention of life makes her wince just the tiniest bit] Yeah, I guess it is. [her mouth twists into a wry grimace] Only now my life is to be spent here.
no subject
[He winces a little bit too, yeeeaaahh this situation really isn't ideal is it.]
There are people looking into a way to like, get out of here? So. I don't think we're going to just be stuck here forever, y'know?
[Really he sounds a lot more optimistic about this that he actually is. Even if they can get home, his hopes about actually being alive once he gets there aren't very high.]
no subject
And I'd imagine that my friends back home are looking for me. Brainy and Lyle are two of the smartest beings in all of the United Planets, if anyone can find a way to bridge the divide between this place and the rest of the galaxy, it's them.
[and she sounds a lot more confident than she feels. what she said about Brainy and Lyle being smart is true, but the part about finding her is them knowing to look for her in the first place. and if she is dead as she fears, there would be no reason to look]
no subject
[HA HA no he doesn't. Everyone back home kind of has a way bigger problem on their hands than trying to track down one goofball in a spider costume.]
no subject
Anyway, our odds! I think you're right. Between your friends looking for you in your home and my friends looking for me in mine, we'll both be home in no time.
[HA HA HA, she doesn't think so. and when she was taken, the Legion had a much bigger problem on their hands, four Daxamites, each with the powers of Superman, determined to destroy Earth]
no subject
Right, yeah! Some day we're all gonna look back on this and go "wow, what a crazy trip that was".
[everything is terrible and nothing is okay. what a great thing to bond over!]
no subject
Some day soon. But we'll have to find a way to keep in touch after all of this is over. Brainy and Tony will probably consider it a challenge, to make a device which allows conversations through time to an alternate Earth.
[that's assuming Tinya faces the fact that she's probably dead. she plans to deny that as long as she can]
no subject
That definitely sounds like something he'd try to make, though. I'd be surprised if he hasn't already thought up something like that.
[She and him both, buddy. Denial is totally healthy!]
no subject
Maybe all he needs is the proper inspiration? I'd say that Brainy would help, but he doesn't really play well with others.
[until denial stops working and you blurt out your problem to the first person willing to listen]
no subject
Not gonna lie, Mr. Stark would probably have a blast just messing with that guy.
[Then it's a whole new mess of fun problems]
