If the rain on your face isn't enough to wake you up in the colosseum, maybe the thundering footsteps and- well, thunder- is. The first thing that you may notice is that it's incredibly wet around here, with winds that could knock you over if you aren't careful and thunder that brings with it a torrent of constant rainfall.
That's all fine though, because the gods saw fit to help you out on your way in and now everyone will be waking up wearing a rain coat! These coats are a little odd, and some of them are downright silly, but we trust that you'll make do. Of course, a few of the raincoats have additional sleeves, neck holes, and entirely too many buttons as well- but hey, it's the best we could do.
Wait, what was that about thundering footsteps? Oh right, as you're navigating your new fashion choices, there are some monsters afoot who will want nothing more than to grind you into a pulp and eat you- well, if you're organic, that is. If you're not organic, then they still want to grind you to a pulp, but maybe not so much the eating part.
Ogres are from many fantasy stories, but these in particular are from the Dragon Age series. With incredible strength and stamina and massive horns, fangs, and a bloodlust for violence, these monsters won't stop until everyone around them is a blood smear on the ground. They're also not too happy about this rainfall either, so be careful not to slip in the puddles as you run away from them!
Once you've splashed around a bit, feel free to run off into the stormy abyss of our islands. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers September 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
Inside
Looks like it. [a pause] Don't tell me it's New People Day.
no subject
[He stopped himself, his brows furrowing underneath his prosthetic face.]
New people day? Oh, I guess if there's a welcome guide that makes sense this happens regularly. Soo, I guess it is, huh?
[If he sounds unsure, it's because he's very unsure, even he just managed to work out some kind of logic for the first time since he arrived. Hooray for things settling down, he guesses.]
I'm sorry for barging in.
no subject
[she shrugs, then sets a fifth place at the table]
Yeah, it happens every month, right about now. Kinda was hoping the stupid gods would call this month out due to the rainstorm from hell, but what can you do?
[she sounds calm, even blase about Sal's sudden appearance. she's been here way too long to be startled by such things]
It's cool. We were about to have dinner. You hungry?
no subject
Oh, um...I mostly just wanted to get my bearings, then I'll be out of your hair. [He laughs a little.] I just felt like I was about to get swept up by the wind or something. Thanks for the offer though, that's very kind of you.
no subject
Yeah? It's crazy out there, I've never seen anything like it. And--well, sure. [guess who's unused to being called kind? this girl!] Feel free to have a seat on the couch while you figure out what you're gonna do next.
no subject
Thank you - I won't be long. [He literally just needs to calm down. He's still frazzled, despite his demeanor.
He moved to take a seat, taking off his weird raincoat first so as not to get the couch wet. It did a good job of keeping his clothes dry, at least.]
My name is Sal, by the way. My friends call me Sally Face.
[That is a bit of an open invitation to her, since she's been so kind to him. See? That's twice now.]
no subject
Sure, no problem. Feel free to chill. [Hadriel has a way of doing that to even the toughest people, so no judgement]
Well, it's nice to meet you, Sally Face. I'm George. I've been here over a year, so if you have any questions? It's cool to ask.
[...she may as well start getting used to it, huh?]
no subject
[He said that thoughtfully, canting his head a bit as if to reflect on that. That guide thing did mention no one knew how to get home, and that some people have been here a while, but having met someone that's been here over a year really cements that fact in for him.]
Do you mind if I ask...do you like it here?
[That might be a stupid question what with the storm and those hideous monsters, but maybe not. He's curious.]
no subject
[it's hard for her to believe at times. sometimes, she feels every day of that year and two months, other times it's like she just showed up yesterday. either way, being here is a head trip]
For the most part? [she thinks a moment] Yeah, I think so. There are a lot of good people here. And if it wasn't for here, I probably wouldn't have gotten the idea to become a doctor instead of just a Reaper.
[it's not a stupid question, it's one that makes a lot of sense]
no subject
Though, his attention is forcefully grabbed by something she said at the end there - as much as he wants to ask her about how she decided on being a doctor-]
A reaper? [His brows furrowed in confusion under his mask.] What does that mean?
[Assuming it doesn't mean exactly what it sounds like?]
no subject
and she's got no reason to hide what she is. not here. here, she can be as open about it as she pleases. and it pleases, if only for how much it would have pissed her old boss off]
A Grim Reaper. Those who collect the souls of those about to die and send 'em on to the afterlife. At least that's what I did in my world. Here? Kinda the opposite.
no subject
A grim reaper. So it's not just a one person job? There's more of you?
[He supposed that made sense if he actually sat and thought about it.]
(cw: suicide mention)
None of 'em are here, but yeah. There's more. And we're assigned to divisions. I had murders, accidents, and suicides. All the people who are guaranteed to ask you to take it back.
[very little makes sense about Reaping in George's world, but she's since learned that hers isn't the only way of death]
(cw: suicide mention)
[Sal has trouble enough just talking to them sometimes. Sure, once he gets passed the mortal wounds still very present on their bodies it's easy to just...talk to them, but that doesn't mean he doesn't think about it. About their deaths, or the lives they left behind, or regretfully gave up.]
Actually, if they don't want to go, you take them anyway, right? If so, how come some of them still hang around? Or they escapees or something?
[It would explain why they always seem as if they're in a rush to leave after a minute or two.]
no subject
[as long as George got to the soul before the death, it didn't retain any of its wounds. unlike the time Mason didn't get to a person before she got mauled by a bear]
Yeah, kind of have to. Tried to figure out ways around it at first, but they all backfired. And they don't hang around. At least not in my world. I don't get to leave until the soul moves on to the afterlife.
no subject
[So it probably works differently where she's from. Not that he has any idea how it really works where he's from, either.]
They hang around a lot where I'm from. My apartment is full of the dead who can't seem to let go of the place.
no subject
[death seems to work differently in almost every world. it really is weird]
Seriously? That's gotta suck. Are they at least decent roommates?
no subject
Most of them are just scared, I think. But for the most part they don't cause any trouble. I'll go back and visit them whenever I can. When they'll show themselves, at least.
no subject
Can't say that I blame 'em. Death's scary shit. And that's nice of you, it's probably lonely to be a ghost. But they're shy?
no subject
[Of course, he doesn't have the whole grim reaper perspective, but he's seen enough to agree heavily that death is some scary shit.]
I guess that depends? My friend Megan...she only comes out for me and my best friend. And even that took her a while. I think she's just shy. But others...sometimes I get the feeling something is holding them back.
no subject
she wrinkles her nose slightly] Holding them back? That doesn't sound good. In fact, it sounds potentially very bad.
no subject
[He shrugged, realizing the futility of trying to put it into words at the moment.]
It's pretty confusing to me.
no subject
So were you born like that? Being able to see ghosts?
