Intro Log: Don't Wake Tonberry

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for September
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: September 10th-13th
Warnings: Cute monsters, a way to pass the time, and plenty of newbies!

Waking up in Hadriel certainly has its down sides, but if this weird murdercave city is good at one thing, it's keeping people entertained. As you awaken on the hard ground of the colosseum, you might see a rectangular cardboard box lying near you. Ignore it for now, as you get your bearings, but if you get bored? Well, you'll find these exciting and unique board games will keep you entertained!

But how could you possibly get bored, when there are plenty of cute monsters around to keep you company? Sharing the colosseum with all the new arrivals are Tonberries. In addition to their natural cuteness defense, they also carry very large knives. They're slow-moving and look innocent and even friendly, but be careful - one strike from that knife and you'll be a bloody mess. They won't attack unless you get too close, but who doesn't want to hug a Tonberry? And of course, if you attack, they'll counter with extreme prejudice.

Managed to resist the urge to hug a Tonberry? Safely escaped from the clutches of the colosseum, new board game in tow? Awesome! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

It's been um, ten months.

[If Matt's asking then Emily's surely explained the time difference thing; it would've been hard not to. It's a little strange that the whole thing feels normal to Chris at this point, though time differences aside the actual time length is something he knows can be just as much of a shock to new arrivals.]

And I know that probably sounds like, bad, being stuck here for almost a year, but um... Try not to worry about it, I guess? It definitely sucks here sometimes, but it could be worse.

[A lot worse.]

( seven months for Emily, ten for Chris. and Matt's just got here, is still trying to process everything around him. is too damn tired to be freaked out by this, because he thought they'd reached the pinnacle of weirdness with the random psycho who killed Josh.

(which, as it turned out, wasn't even the case at all. as it turns out, his night - if he ever gets back - will get a lot weirder.

someone have mercy on these poor, sad children.) )

Guess I'll have to try. ( he's not sure that it'll be successful, but if Emily and Chris have a feel for this place, it'll be easier on him, right? god, what would it have even been like, being the first person here, not knowing what was going on, not having anyone you knew?

Matt's very lucky, really.

he pauses, lifts and rolls his shoulders, leans forward and exhales in a fluid motion. )

Uh. ( it freaked Em out, so he may as well come clean about it; ) Look, the last thing I remember is meeting you and Ash after Josh-- ah...

( faked his own death, he guesses? )

[Chris goes quiet at Matt's last comments, gaze shifting to the far wall; it doesn't freak him out to hear of the major time difference, but it both means Matt's behind on a lot and Chris is brought back, if a little distantly, to the moment in question. Chris barely remembers any of it, knowing the gist of what was said but none of the details, so in shock at the time that nothing specific had laid down in his memory; he just remembers being devastated, and that he'd cried most of the way through the explanation.

Had Josh been secretly watching--or filming?--that meetup too, just as impassively as he had what happened in the basement later that night?

Chris blinks a few times, drawing his thoughts back to the present, and offers a weak smile that's surely easy to see through.]

Y-You're um, from the earliest then, of anyone but uh... The twins, and when Josh was here before.

[Congratulations on not having met wendigos, Matt.]

( that's something they'll likely end up sharing in common, later, once the memory stops being so fresh in Matt's mind. right now, he can still hear the echoes, their faces - although they fuzz, flicker into something more indistinct in the aftermath of the adrenaline from the colosseum.

but yes, Matt is wonderfully innocent in all of this. innocent and unblemished by anything but Emily's explanations and a terrible prank. )

Josh was here?

( God, there's a lot for him to get used to. )

Yeah. For um, a long time. He and Ash both disappeared last month.

[And it sucked on so many levels and in such different ways. But he tries not to think too much about it.]

Jess was here for awhile too, and Sam and Mike were both here too. With uh, you showing up, all of us have been here at least once.

[So congrats on that too. Now Hadriel has had the whole set at one point or another.]

Uh. Wow.

( wow. uh. he's just... gonna rub his temples, try to (pointlessly) stave off the headache that's arisen from all of this. )

That's... a lot to get used to.

( but damn, all of them have been here? that's... is this not just another part of the mountains, maybe? somewhere they hadn't known about? )

Yeah. Don't uh, worry too much about that though, there's um... More important stuff to focus on.

[Since they can't control who comes or who goes, it's a lot more important for Matt to get used to the idea of where they are and events happening than who might or might not show up.]

( yeah, Em's been explaining some of that to him. his head hurts. a lot. )

Like the monsters?

Well, yeah, the monsters suck, but uh... Not them as much as the shit the gods pull.

[It's weird to even thing about, but Chris is a whole lot less bothered by monsters now than he ever thought possible.]

( oh, good. things worse than monsters. look what you're doing to this poor cinnamon roll, Chris. )

Uh, really? 'Cause those things had knives.

( he can kind of believe it, but. he doesn't want to believe it. help. )

[Sorry bro but it's like jumping into a cold pool. Best to do it all at once.]

Uh, yeah. I mean, some of the god-stuff is fine and whatever, but some of it's way worse than the arena monsters.

... Like what?

( he's so gonna regret asking that. )

[Chris hesitates, despite that he thinks it's best for Matt to know. The wendigo thing is a little too much to throw at him at once, and Chris doesn't much want to talk about the buried alive event, but there's another one that comes to mind and illustrates the danger clearly enough.]

Well um, there was the time Rage made people want to kill each other for like a week. I'm not sure if anyone actually died, but um, there were some close calls.

[Some really close calls, and he doesn't want to think much about those either.]

( ... yeah he's definitely regretting asking that. so just. give him a minute. a long minute. several minutes. there's so much he's already learned, about this place, about how far behind in their timeline he is-

and now this.

gods trying to kill them. monsters trying to kill them.

can he just go back to football practice? like. just rewind time to Josh's mountain invite and stop him. )

What the fuck? That's- that's messed up.

( that's all he's got. )

[Okay, maybe he was wrong on the idea of getting the shock out of the way; Matt looks a little too shocked. So Chris avoids what he first wants to say, which is that it gets even more messed up, and instead nods a little.]

Yeah. The gods um, pull something usually like twice a month, so just be careful if anything suddenly seems out of the ordinary or whatever. If you hear people talking about events, that's what they mean.

[But now that that's covered--]

I should uh... Probably let you get back to trying to find something that counts as food, though.

[If he still has an appetite.]

( yeah, Em did a lot of info dumping earlier. he'll need to have some time to sleep on all of it, to work it out in his own head before he can take any more. )

Yeah. Uh. Thanks.

( but the info is appreciated. it can't be easy to turn up here with no clue and no one to explain. )

[Chris lingers awkwardly a moment, thinking of just saying he'll see Matt around and being done with it, but instead he suddenly feels he should add--]

As much as it um, sucks for everyone here, I know Em's really glad you showed up.

[Not that he's talked to her since, what with her and Matt being all hidden away, but he remembers very clearly how many times Emily's talked about missing Matt and wishing she had a chance to make things up to him for what happened on the mountain. Chris isn't so sure she needs to, but he is sure that having Matt here will make a lot of things easier on her.]

( he nods, a slight flush covering his cheeks, because. yeah, she's shown that.

this place could always be worse, he supposes. )

[Chris grins at that, his work here done, then offers a small wave and disappears back into the living room.]
