Well, Hope and Delight are messing with the door again, but at least this time dragons aren't involved, right? This attempt goes a bit better - sure, no one gets sent home, but if everyone will just look under their seats, they'll find a FREE [INSERT SOMETHING YOU MAYBE DIDN'T WANT AT ALL HERE]! Awesome! So nice! Yup, throughout these few days people will be finding things from home - something they loved, something they used all the time, something they hated, something they totally forgot they even had. All sorts of cool stuff!
Well, they might not actually find it. Their neighbor might, or a complete stranger. And who knows where it could turn up? At the park, half-buried? In the Silent Hill zone, kept safe by a horrifying monster? Or hey, maybe in somebody's underwear drawer. Awkward. Better try to find your stuff, or find the owner of whatever weird crap you found. It could be something important.► This log covers October 15th-October 19th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well

It's my job too. You notice patterns. Behaviour. Almost every King lets you know how to take him down. He'll disguise his weakness as a strength. His Achilles heel. You just have to know where and when to look.
[ Raising his glass to her, a kind of toast, before finishing it off. ]

[Miriam knows a few kings she wants to topple back home. Not yet, maybe. When she's bigger. But that's okay. She knows how to wait.]
no subject
[ Passing his empty glass between his hands, like it was a ball. His eyebrows raised a few times and some little sounds left his lips, he looked as if he were talking to himself in his head. ]
For example, let's take a look at the mind of a psychopath killer. They're smart, they're vain and narcissistic. They want you to catch them, even if they don't realize it right away. After all, what's the point in going to all the trouble of butchering and torturing if no one is ever going to see it, to appreciate it...
[ He pauses, watching her face, trying to make sure he's not freaking her out with what he's saying. ]
... They leave crumbs and clues, thinking just enough to get themselves noticed. Get stuck in habits and patterns that they didn't want you to pick up on, however. Like I said, what they believe to be a strength is always a weakness in the end.

[She's quiet a moment, not looking at him.]
Usually they don't. The Sons, I mean. But their boss always does something big. Last time she drowned people in a big aquarium. Lined them up on the railing and kicked 'em off one at a time. She let a few of them live, but only if they pushed their friends over the edge. The fish were still in it.
no subject
Drowning is denial and forgivness... It's being punished by a controlling hand. Helpless yet fighting to hold on despite knowing you've lost. Then, then it's accepting and calmness... A look of forgiveness on the face of the submerged.
[ He really needs to be careful when he talks like this. It could easily give someone the wrong impression. Lord knows he's already pissed off a few people by- well, by being himself.
He blinks, turning to look at her. The explanation made sense to Will, the reason why these Sons she spoke of did what they did. But she wouldn't understand and he had to phrase it so he didn't upset her. ]
Then their boss is afraid of losing her Sons. She's scared of being stabbed in the back. Make the punished push their own. No more blood on her hands and nothing but watchful eyes scared of what she's made others do.
[ He pauses in thought. ]
This boss, is she religious? Does she have a vice or any kind? Something she always does or has?

Miriam nods just once, solemnly. She keeps petting Winston. He's soft. She likes his ears.]
I dunno. I never saw her up close. Just a picture one time. And maybe there's something, but it's not religion, exactly. They just have this story, one people used to tell back on Earth about la llorona. You know. The Weeping Woman. She drowned all her kids, then felt so bad she drowned herself. But then she got turned into a ghost and keeps on doing it, so back on Earth you had to be careful around rivers. And that's their symbol. They paint it on their armor and any ships they take.
[Miriam frowns.]
Gilly had a friend who was with them, once. The Sons, I mean. But he got away. And his friend said it was all a big game. Just something they planned out to scare people.
[Well, it fucking worked, that's for sure. Miriam shivers.]
They're just evil. They hurt people.
no subject
So she doesn't even have her own story? A coward, tagging onto the fame of an older fable, made to scare children into behaving.
[ He paused. He'd heard stories such as that back home, in mythology and urban legends, but to think that someone was out there, living it out to manipulate people? That was a scary thought. ]
It's easier to hurt, than it is to understand, love or trust. I could stab you in the guts faster than I could dig into my pocket and give you money. It's just how it is. Some people aren't wired up right from the start. Others are given the privilege.
[ Not that he was about to hurt her of course, it was just him making his point. Winston yawned and nuzzled his head against Miriam's hand. ]
no subject
[She says it quietly, a little sad. It's not here and so it doesn't hurt as much, but it still happened. He's still dead. Two of the Sons still--
Yeah. Not thinking about that.]
They could've just shot him. I mean. If they really had to. But they don't do that. [Miriam shakes her head.] They give people a choice. You join them or you're not a person anymore. You're just a--thing. And it doesn't matter what you do to a thing. They say, 'The Sons of Plunder welcome you to the fold.' All nice and polite. But if you say no, they do whatever they want. They always kill a bunch of people. Hurt the rest. Sell some of them.
[Miriam presses her face against Winston's chest.]
I don't care if that's easier, or whatever. They didn't have to do that to Gilly.
no subject
Are they here?
[ He asked quietly. Looking around out of the corner of his eyes. ]
I'm sorry...
[ He wanted to comfort her but thought better of it. Maybe she'd lash out? Maybe she wouldn't mind at all? Winston pawed at her gentle as she pressed her face into his fur, perhaps that was all the comfort she needed. ]
I'll tell you what... If you help me fix up that engine and put it in something we could call seaworthy... I'll teach you all I know about that kind of people. I'll teach you how to recognize them and avoid them.
[ It's not fair, the things she speaks of and Will's massive amount of empathy was sucking up all her pain, like a sponge and damn did it hurt him. He wanted to help, of course, he would. ]
no subject
[But you gotta be careful just in case.
Miriam fluffs Winston's fur again, sighing against him. Barnaby puts his head on her hip. The weight of it helps a little. Keeps her grounded.]
Yeah? I guess that's okay.
[She's quiet a moment.]
And I can tell you about the people here. I know most of 'em.
no subject
Do you? That would be pretty handy actually. I tend to like to stay out of the way, not really keen on the whole social thing.
[ Having Miriam tell him about those who lived here would be excellent! He could profile them without even having to meet them, and then should the occasion arise that he needed to meet them, he'd already have enough information to predict their moves and thoughts. ]
no subject
I kinda guessed that. But yeah, I know pretty much everybody.
[More or less. Miriam glances up at him.]
There was a guy here with a dog a while back, Cullen. He was crazy but he was okay. And Mike's got a wolf. Like, an actual wolf. Who's also named Wolfe.
[She nods solemnly.]
Wolfe was very soft.
no subject
Am I that transparent?
[ Moving to fetch another drink. He shouldn't have much more, considering the headaches he's been having lately. Still, one more can't hurt. ]
Haven't seen any other since I got here. Apart from Barnaby here.
[ Smiling over at the dogs, wanting so badly to join her between them, yet he thinks better of it. He doesn't want to creep her out. ]
Was? What happened to them?
no subject
[Miriam just shrugs, playing with Winston's fur. It doesn't help to think too hard about these things. They happen, you accept it, and you move on.]
Cullen left. They do that sometimes. Just up and leave, poof. Mike's still here, though. He's okay. He was nice to me.
no subject
[ That was news to him and very interesting news too. ]
Are you saying the Gods actually send us back sometimes? Though they claim they can't work the door properly? ... How does that work? Where do we go? Home or?...
[ It was more thinking out loud than actually asking Miriam. Despite himself, Will moved to settle on the other side of her, mindful to keep Barnaby between them, as that's what both she and the hound liked best. He took to gently petting the great lug of a dog, careful not to startle him. ]

So we're managed by a bunch of Gods, who have less control than they'd like us to know?...
[ He sighed. ]
If I vanished, would you look after Winston for me? Should he remain that is?

[ Giving a playful tussle of Barnaby's ears as he leaned his face in closer to the big, adorable, dog. ]
Thank you. It means a lot. Oh! That reminds me, do you know any way of getting actual meat around here?
no subject
[Barnaby chuffs happily, tail thumping against the floor.]
What kinda meat? I mean, you can go hunting in the caves or ask somebody to do it for you. Barnaby catches stuff sometimes. He could get you something.
no subject
Real meat. Like deer or rabbit, grouse even? Something that's full of vitamins and minerals, stuff that'll give them plenty of energy and nourishment.
[ Will wasn't bothered about himself, he could live off cold canned soup, so long as Winston ate like a king. ]
no subject
[It sounds weird. Miriam shrugs, wiggling her fingers in front of Winston's nose.]
There's the monsters. Some of them taste okay. Barnaby can get them if they're not too big.
no subject
[ His ears were twitching every time they said the word, almost getting excited at the idea there might be one to chase or eat. ]
Mmm... No, not too keen on the whole eating a monster deal... I'm sure I can find something Winston already eats.
[ A tought. ]
Could the Gods bring some in? If I was to pray to them or whatever you do around here.
