Event Log: Jumpscares

A dark shadow looms over Hadriel on the morning of May 16th. There's a tension in the air, something palpable, as if everything has gone still and is ready to snap. You've been waiting for the other shoe to drop for hours now, and you're getting to the point where you're starting to wish that it would just happen already so that you can stop feeling this way.

Of course, when it does happen, it's not quite like you expect.

Maybe it's a tiger leaping out of your closet, claws extended. Maybe it's a faceless slenderman, stepping out from around the corner or a monster with beak and claws ripping open your shower curtain when you're most vulnerable- but within seconds, after you've been startled half to death by the monsters, they're gone. They vanish in a puff of smoke, or dissipate into glitter, or become something silly instead for a few brief moments before disappearing entirely.

Weird. But not unendurable, I guess. The bright side is that there will also be a few demon cats that have also made their way through the door. No two cats are ever in the same location, but there seems to be enough of them to go around, though the toothy one can be a bit vicious. Still, they aren't untameable, and might make nice pets, as long as you don't mind a bloody finger or two when it's time for lunch!

I could see how that would be a comfort.

[Dreaming of another place, yet undiscovered. Maketh sips her tea.]

As am I. I -- am better for knowing them. Regardless of how it happened.

Have you traveled across to different planets? I'm sure you must have seen many fantastic and exotic wonders.

[Anne loved stories, and since she didn't have many of her own she would listen to everyone else's.]

A few. Some of them were quite beautiful.

[Maketh gives Anne a little smile.]

I went to Naboo once, on assignment. The capital is surrounded by waterfalls. I had never seen anything like it. So much water. The way the sun shines through the mist...

That sounds incredible. I wish I could go there myself to see it. What is your home like?

[mismanagement]

[Maketh hesitates.]

It's a desert planet. Very little grows there. My parents made their living gathering drinking water from the mist. But if you go out at sunrise and you went up high enough, you could see for nearly thirty miles. It was beautiful, in its way.

[souveraine]

The entire planet is a desert? [She had never seen a desert, she couldn't imagine it.]

That must have been a difficult life living in such a place. I am glad you were able to explore different worlds.

[mismanagement]

Yes. It happens sometimes.

[Maketh nods slowly.]

I did. I was fortunate in that regard. It was to my great horror that I found myself assigned to Lothal again. But such is -- fate. Or what have you.

[souveraine]

Lothal.

[She repeated, sounding out the strange name.]

Fate is indeed a strange thing but I have faith that everything happens for a reason and only God knows. We are not meant to, but all we can do is live our lives the best we are able to.

[mismanagement]

I suppose that is a good way to think of it. [Maketh pauses, looking thoughtful.] Your religion is monotheistic, then?

guess who didn't pay attention in Sunday School...

Yes, there is only one God. He sent his son, Jesus Christ, to sacrifice himself for our sins, so we may be saved. [She touched the cross around her neck with a smile.]

And I pray to the mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, so that she may grant my wish to have a son, an heir for France.

[mismanagement]

[Maketh nods, curious.] I believe Henry follows the same God. The church holds a great deal of power in his world.

[She tips her head to the side.]

Why a son?

Jesus was a part of God, so thus he was a son. [Not to mention the inferior status of women but that was a subject for another time.]

Even kings bow to the head of the church, the Pope. He is God's representative on earth.

[mismanagement]

Oh, I understand.

[A prophet of sorts. Maketh nods.]

Does this Pope command an army? Or merely direct other leaders?

[souveraine]

He does have some forces at his command but nothing compared to the armies of kings and other rulers. But kings and princes go to him for guidance and blessings because God rules over us all.

The Pope is the only one who can grant dispensations for marriages that would normally be forbidden by scripture- my parents were required to get one as they were cousins.

[Royal inbreeding at it's best.]

[mismanagement]

That's logical.

[It's a practice that Maketh recognizes from history. Sometimes, when she had time, she would read about old worlds long since dead.

She pauses at the last part.]

Your parents were -- cousins. Is that -- normal?

[souveraine]

Marrying cousins of some degree is fairly common, to keep the royal families strong and maintain alliances.

My husband's sister married my brother and became Queen of Spain, and I became Queen of France. That united France and Spain as well as Austria, given my mother's family.

[mismanagement]

[Maketh tips her head to the side.] Doesn't that have the risk of genetic instability? Increased risk of disease, and the like.

[souveraine]

[Anne's brow furrowed with confusion, not sure what Maketh was speaking of.] Not that I am aware of, my parents had several children. Louis and I- well, we will soon hopefully have an heir to the throne.

[mismanagement]

Never mind. It's not important.

[Not right now, at least. Maketh watches Anne for a moment.]

I'm sure your child will be strong.

[souveraine]

[She smiled though there was sadness to it. She would always remember the child she had lost but she refused to give up hope.]

Thank you, Maketh, you are so kind.

[mismanagement]

I am trying to be kind, now. [Maketh admits it quietly.] I do not always accomplish it. But I am trying.

[souveraine]

I know it can be difficult but I assure you, you are making an admirable effort, Maketh.

Thank you. [She gives Anne a little smile.] It -- means a great deal, to hear that.
