A dark shadow looms over Hadriel on the morning of May 16th. There's a tension in the air, something palpable, as if everything has gone still and is ready to snap. You've been waiting for the other shoe to drop for hours now, and you're getting to the point where you're starting to wish that it would just happen already so that you can stop feeling this way.
Of course, when it does happen, it's not quite like you expect.
Maybe it's a tiger leaping out of your closet, claws extended. Maybe it's a faceless slenderman, stepping out from around the corner or a monster with beak and claws ripping open your shower curtain when you're most vulnerable- but within seconds, after you've been startled half to death by the monsters, they're gone. They vanish in a puff of smoke, or dissipate into glitter, or become something silly instead for a few brief moments before disappearing entirely.
Weird. But not unendurable, I guess. The bright side is that there will also be a few demon cats that have also made their way through the door. No two cats are ever in the same location, but there seems to be enough of them to go around, though the toothy one can be a bit vicious. Still, they aren't untameable, and might make nice pets, as long as you don't mind a bloody finger or two when it's time for lunch!► This log covers May 16th-May 20th.

[It's Saber's next words she seems to take issue with. For Ellie, it is not as simple as not letting the fear control her. Of course that's part of it. But this is another part, sharp around the edges, that isn't about fear at all. It's about anger.
She says none of this to Saber. Instead, she spits:]
I'm not letting it control me.
[Convincing.]

Very well.
[ Saber can talk until the cows come home, but it won't help Ellie cope any more than she already is — that has to come from within. But she can't just leave, either. ]
I have heard these illusions appear much less often to those with company. I am happy to delay my patrol, if you would like to test that theory. [ It's the only way she can think to offer without it seeming like a slight on Ellie's pride. That, and if she can stop her from nearly shooting someone, then she's done her job as a guard for the day. ]

She stares hard at Saber for a brief moment, and then shrugs.]
Why don't I just go on it with you? I can handle myself if we find anything.

My name is Saber. I am a knight, and though I have only recently arrived, a member of the guard here. [ Which is probably obvious by the patrolling. ] I am still learning the layout of this city, so perhaps you might assist me with that as well.

Saber is... a cool name. Like a comic book character.]
I'm Ellie. I guess I've been here awhile now. Not a full year yet or anything, but... awhile. So I know my way around the city, yeah. Not like there's anywhere else to go unless you're keen on getting torn to shreds.

[ Not because she thinks she can leave, but to test out just how dangerous things can get here. She needs a benchmark to compare herself to, to know what she can handle if things get wild. ]
You mentioned a gun earlier. [ Well — she mentioned almost shooting someone, but same thing really. ] Are you trained in the use of firearms?
[ Her voice is curious. She knows what they are, vaguely; she's even come under machinegun fire once, but they weren't yet a thing in her time. ]
no subject
I guess.
[Yes. Military school. She knew how to fire a gun before she knew how to swim. ...Actually, she still can't do more than flounder in water.]
How come?
