On February 14th, Rage and Fear decide to give Hope a little bit of help taking care of the residents of Hadriel - they'll provide some food for awhile. How nice! Except, of course, that there's an extra ingredient in this food. A can of beef stew? Yeah... that might not be beef. But hey, it still tastes pretty good! Unfortunately, some spirits slipped through the Door last time it opened, and they're ready to possess anyone who participates in cannibalism - even if they don't know it.
Anyone who eats the provided meat will be possessed by a wendigo spirit. Over the course of twelve days, they will transform into a monster that feels little but rage and hunger. While at first it can be explained away easily enough (people are super annoying, and isn't everyone a little hungry most of the time?), by February 18th, wendigo transformations are impossible to ignore. A few days after, on February 22nd, the anger and cravings of the wendigo spirit will overcome all other emotions, and possessed characters may begin hunting.
The physical and mental transformation will be complete by February 26th. The possessed characters will have lost themselves completely at that point. While physical healing (done by a character with Hope's blessing or another healing ability) can turn back the physical and some mental effects, they will remain possessed until death or until Hope removes the wendigo spirit - which can only be done on the altar of Hope's temple. So have fun dragging your angry, possessed friends there!
On March 1st, Rage does Hope a solid (because she feels sort of bad) and kills all remaining wendigos. Upon revival, the spirit will be gone and the character will be fully recovered. Hopefully no one holds what they did while possessed against them!► This log covers February 14th-March 1st.

That was perfect. Now I'm stuck reading this tag in James's voice
He scratches his head, looking at her with even more interest. "Huh. You go through the whole thing?"
He's curious about the caves, having hoped that they'd offer a way out. Or at least more answers. But given how everybody's still here... he knows that's a very slim chance.
if james were here: "this cave is full of monsters! how can you just stand there and make soup?!"
A nuisance, really.
He's the hero Hadriel needs
"How sure are people? Have they actually marked the way they went? Maybe they just got turned around. People get lost in the alleys back home--I bet it's not so different in a cave."
Probably even worse. But that thought isn't enough to dissuade him from considering that he check it out himself.
my kingdom for a silent hill cast here...
Because, you know... monsters.

He stares back at her, wondering if she's making a joke or if she's just being pedantic. "I know that. But it's the basic idea."
He throws the canned vegetables into the pot, then grins back at her. "If the caves are that dangerous here, then they're even more like the alleys back home."
no subject
"Well, you're going to want to be prepped differently in the caves than you would in an alley. Have fought things from bears to giant sixty-foot snakes out there--" she nods at the pot. "--one in which would be what you're about to eat right now."
Both of the aforementioned beasts are extinct by now, thanks to Hope's call to arms.
no subject
"What'd you bring in with you?"
He hasn't seen too many guns around here, which is what he imagines most people would look to bring in. Proud knife-wielder that he is, he's pretty sure he could work with just the blade even against a snake.
After all, it's not like it'd kill him.
no subject
Then she blinks at him. "To the caves, you mean?" She brings her hand over the back of her head, scratching. "Nothing much, really. Just the armor that came along through the Door as well. Didn't exactly have any weapons handy."
Simply because she doesn't need any weapons.
"Would be nice if they had rifles supplied here."
no subject
"Well, I'm not gonna bring armor in..." He shrugs. He's speedy, so he'll be fine, right? He suddenly remembers why he asked--her words just a moment ago--and scowls at her. "Hey, just how weak do you think I am if you're tellin' me to go in all prepared when you just had that?"
Maybe armor of some sort was all she meant when she said that someone going into the caves should prep. But Firo's more inclined to assume it was an insult.
no subject
That's when he seems to make the evident assumption that she was undermining him a moment ago, and she just stares. How in the hell did he get to that conclusion--?
Oh.
"You're mistaken, was not calling you weak. Am just not something that needs weapons like people--" She shakes her head as she tries to avoid yet another misconception. "--like many people do. Though they can be helpful at times."
It seemed better than using any of the weapons from Rage's arsenal, since she doesn't have any formal training in any of those things.
no subject
Maybe he jumps the gun sometimes. But it's better than letting someone get away with a derogatory remark.
"How come?" It's then that he notices that she said something rather than someone. The heck does that mean? Could she be referring to her profession rather than herself personally?
His mind flashes back to Victor and his claims that all FBI agents have almost superhuman agility. He'd probably insist that he could take a sixty-foot snake without weapons. Firo doesn't notice himself start to scowl.
no subject
And that's when a stupid thought occurs to her.
"Because of this."
Rather than explaining it, she lifts her hand up. Enough distance is put between them and the surroundings that it should be safe. Then her hand goes up in flames.
It's a small fire, crackling from her fingertips to the palm of her hand. Hopefully it should get the message across as to why she feels prepared enough to enter the caves, despite not being armed to the teeth.

He leans in a little closer, though he's careful not to go so close that his eyebrows get singed off.
"Randy could do a trick like this, but he just had a glove covered in gasoline..." But there's no glove that he can see here, so how? He looks up at Rey expectantly, excitedly.
no subject
"Am made up of both synthetic and organic tissue. Not only is this body fireproof, it can also generate heat. No gloves necessary, though the armor that came through the door can be helpful."
After a moment, she just curls her fingers into a fist and snuffs out the fire right then and there. Briefly, red veins can be seen pulsating under the slightly glowing skin where the flames had once been.
no subject
He sniffs for the smell of any lingering gasoline or alcohol she might have used for the trick, but... as near as he can tell, it is no trick.
He leans back. "So you can do that any time you want? I guess it makes sense why you didn't bring anything, then."
Perhaps he's a tad embarrassed as he rubs the back of his neck and then turns to check on the soup. But he's not exactly ponying up an apology for his overreaction.
no subject
She just shrugs and leaves it alone. After all, she is no teacher and doubts that she could say or do anything to make things any easier for Firo to grasp.
Rey nods, and while she could demonstrate this again just to show off, that really isn't her style. Besides, it sounds like he already believes her well enough.
"Yes, and the armor amplifies this ability. It's... ironically easier than trying to utilize any of the weapons here. Even if it does require getting a little more up close and personal."
no subject
If someone's trying to whack her with a stick, yes, she could just burn it up. But there are some that might be more tenacious.
"What's wrong with the weapons here? Even if there's no guns, the knives'll always work fine."
no subject
Granted, he does have a point. Someone could easily come at her with a long-ranged weapon and best her. But she wasn't thinking so much about combat with a peer as she has with the monsters in the caves.
She throws up a hand. "There's nothing wrong with the weapons. Have plenty of experience with knives, so using those is no problem. Others just aren't as helpful if they only end up getting destroyed by the fire."
no subject
"It does seem weird, huh? The weapons they picked to put out here, I mean. Not even a pistol--I know a lotta guys back home who'd be upset about it." And she'd mentioned rifles, too. "Makes me wonder where they get 'em from."
He stirs the soup once more and eyes her. Is she wondering what he wonders? That this may be yet another clue that these 'gods' are limited and hardly as powerful as they may pretend?
On the other hand, it could simply be a way to keep their captives from getting too dangerous. But then you'd think they'd off the fire-lady.
no subject
"It's a minor inconvenience. Suppose one can always learn how to pick up new skills, though."
And Rey intends on trying to figure out how the hell one is supposed to handle a sword. It can't be that much different than, say, a bayonet. Right?
She casts Firo a sidelong glance as she turns and leans her back over the counter, her arms crossing over her chest. "Don't know where they come from. Supposedly, one of the 'gods' keeps the place stocked, but the weapons have to be coming from somewhere."
Where, she hasn't yet figured out.
no subject
"And somebody woulda' noticed if it was one of the buildings around here... So it's probably somewhere else. Or far, at least."
Could it be underground? They're already underground.
He shakes his head, trying to ward off a headache, and turns back to the soup. Judging it about ready, he turns off the stove and moves off to rummage for some bowls.
no subject
There aren't that many other places that Rey can think of that the 'gods' would use to store their goods. The city itself is pretty closed off, and the tunnels seem to all loop back to the same place. Or go on for miles to nowhere, whichever.
She opens her mouth to speak, then stops when she notices Firo move. She takes a step back from the counter. "Need any help?" Or should she just shut up and sit down?
no subject
He shakes his head at the offer of help. He fills a bowl and offers it to her before filling the second one.
The question from a moment ago is still on his mind, so he asks, "So what is your job anyway?"
no subject
Firo seems like a decent guy, but he didn't immediately strike her as the fighter type. But there's always room to be surprised when it comes to people, especially the people who were dragged to this place.
"Used to be a soldier," she says as she accepts the bowl of soup handed to her. That's a long story short, anyway. She's just met this guy, so she figures it'd be better to keep things simple for now.
no subject
"A soldier?" His forehead wrinkles, and he pauses before sitting down at the table with his own bowl.
Well, she certainly seems different than a lot of the women back home... But he still never would have guessed that. Female soldiers just aren't a thing where he's from, and he can't imagine the military changing that any time soon. Of course, he knows there are still women on the battlefield, but this lady very specifically said 'soldier' not 'nurse.'
It's only after thinking through all this that he realizes he's just been staring at her. He clears his throat, "Um, sorry, it's just surprising. Not that you don't look like you could do it or anything! There just aren't any women like that back home."
