What: The intro log for August
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: August 10th-16th
Warnings: Murdercrabs for the murdercave. A delicacy!

It's early in the morning when you feel the telltale thud of hitting hard-packed earth. Whether you're used to the feeling or not, you'll probably have a bruise or two from hitting the ground, which is another way to say Welcome to Hadriel!

In our beautiful city of Hadriel, you can find many treasures and wonders, like the creepy cat clocks, or the baby face cuckoo clocks, or some dali clocks, or... well, they're all clocks, and lucky for you, they all have different times set on their hands!

Be careful not to spend too much time lingering around with the timepieces, as there are monsters afoot! You should be careful or you'll be overrun by war crabs! These mollusk-like creatures are several feet in diameter and a few hundred pounds, so be careful when dealing with them! They're also capable of utilizing their steam-powered machinery to launch rusty grenades and musket bullets at you- don't think that close range is a good idea either, as their sharp pincers can amputate entire limbs, and they're quicker than they seem.

You might want to get out of this place as soon as possible- maybe one of the other folks around you can lend a hand? Sure, they might be just as confused as you, but there's strength in numbers, after all!

After you've find your way out of the colosseum there's plenty of other distractions. Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

[whether or not said potted plant or the kitten can tell where it comes from, a blue bubble of aura covers them as well as the nautilus from...somewhere.]

Counter-shock!

[a black-clad figure just sort of darts in from the side and launches himself at the nautilus, and one quick zap of electricity fries the thing on the spot. Metal and gears don't hold up well to a shock like that.

Now that that's out of the way, Law gives it an idle kick in the chassis just because fuck you, that's why, and turns to where he swore he saw a person a minute ago. No person, though, just kitty.]

Huh. Odd. Oi. [moving some leaves aside to let the cat out]

[plant!harlan hates everything about this.

The kitty manages to wriggle free with Law's help, and she darts between Law's legs to bound off into the fray. Bye.

And a second later, there's another pop and Harlan reappears, his hair all tousled from Law messing with the plant. Blurgh.]

What the hell, man? [He stands up and runs a hand through his hair to un-fuck it. God, the potted plant thing is like his least favorite magical switcheroo. He'd rather cast fireball on himself.

...

Wait.]

Shit, where'd the cat go? [He looks around, checks his pockets. No dice. Great.]

[hot_mes]

[he really shouldn't be startled by plants turning into people. He still is. Law recoils for a second and then straightens himself out, frowning deeply for no apparent reason.]

That way. [thumbing over his shoulder] Is it important?

[ghostlocked]

[wHAT]

Fucking--yes, she's important. Jesus christ. [He starts off after her.

It takes him a moment to spot her because she's very lil, but aha! She is... in the middle of two large crab monsters. Amazing. He takes another moment to sigh and swear vehemently under his breath before trudging off into the thick of things.

Oh, right. That guy he was just talking to.]

This is your fault, so you want to distract them or something?

[he likes the cat better than you, Harlan.

Sighing, Law concedes with a] Room. Takt.

[The bluish aura swells up around them, and with a flick of a finger he raises one murdercrab into the air. It flails its iron-clad legs ineffectually for a second before being upended and then dropped straight down on top of the other one.

It's the laziest thing he could possibly have done with his ability and yet it's pretty damn effective, considering the impact crumples both their armor.]

Hurry it up so I can kill them without getting you in the crossfire.

[OH.

Okay, Harlan is stopping for a sec to wheel around and give Law a look. What the hell, man? You've been holding out on him. Somehow. Even though you just met, like, three seconds ago.

But, he's not gonna argue. He swoops in to grab John Frusciante... and admittedly has a way easier time of it than he would with the crabs in play, but he's not about to admit that. He jogs back over to Law, stuffing the kitten back into his pocket. For safety.]

Not bad. What was that?

[to accentuate the point, now that the collateral damage is out of the way, he whips out the sword, makes a bunch of seemingly random slashes in the air, and every crab inside the Room becomes crab-parts. A pile of them. Still living, mind, but unable to control limbs that are separated from bodies and muskets without their triggers. Someone else can clean that up.]

That should take care of it for now. [as he turns to Harlan] Turning yourself into a plant is kind of a lame defensive move, though. They could have still crushed you.

[...What? Harlan stares for a minute, waffling between puzzled and impressed.

But if he's impressed, he's not going to admit it after that comment.]

It wasn't a defensive move. My magic packs a punch so sometimes it gets out from under me. Shit goes haywire sometimes.

[Which is embarrassing, but he also considers it a mark of his talent. If his magic wasn't a force to be reckoned with, it would be a hell of a lot easier to control.]

[Law tries really hard not to smirk.

And fails.]

So it was a mistake.

[he says like he's so perfect]

If any more of those things have made it out this far, maybe you should leave the extermination to someone else.

[...HOO BOY okay, deep breaths, Harlan. Don't Blight this guy out of existence just to one-up him. That's a bad idea.]

It wasn't a fucking mistake. Evidently you don't know how magic works, and I'm not about to waste my time explaining it to you. I fight shit scarier than this on the regular, jackass.

[ooh, got under his skin. Law's smirk fades a little but he's still pretty smug overall, idly glancing over his shoulder at the pile of useless murdercrabs]

So do I. Magic, is it? Of course I wouldn't know how it works when it isn't real. [all right maybe he should dial it back a smidge] Not where I come from.

[admittedly his demonstration of power might say otherwise, but they can get into a debate about the semantics of abilities versus sorcery versus dumb people who don't understand something very scientifically explainable later.]

[Harlan snorts.]

So, again, not gonna waste my time, and you shouldn't get on people's dicks about shit if you don't know what you're talking about.

[He holds up a hand to conjure a small puff of flame in his palm. It contorts until it's taken the shape of a hand flipping Law off.]

Magic's totally real.

[oh, so mature, Harlan. Not that it stops Law from being equally mature and raising a middle finger right back (his favorite gesture!)]

Why use magic when the old fashioned way still works perfectly well? I prefer to conserve my energy, thanks.

Old-fashioned way? This shit doesn't take much energy if you're good at it. [Which he is, or so his tone suggests.] I could rot one of those shitty crabs without batting an eye.

[Of course Law already murdered the shit out of all of them, so... You'll have to take his word for it.]

Yeah, sure. [and he had a good time doing it, too.] Seems to me you're lucky I've been hunting them down. I needed the exercise. Too bad there aren't any more in range, I'd like to see a demonstration.

[that is still sarcasm. But by the same token it doesn't take much effort to sense that the immediate area is crab-free]

Alright, so let's find some more. You want a demo, you've got it.

[And he starts off deeper into the coliseum. He will not be one-upped by this fucker.]

There's nowhere else he needs to be right now, so Law shrugs and follows back toward the coliseum gate.]

Sure. Maybe I'll take a break and let you find them, then. Fair warning, though, if I have to defend a potted plant a second time I'm leaving you to them.

It's not gonna happen a second time. [Probably? Technically, it could, but the odds of that happening are insane.]

Even if it does, if something tries to hurt me while I'm a plant, I just turn back. I'm not some fucking damsel in distress.

[He's still stomping he way back into the thick of things. Gonna prove you wrong, asshole.]

This, I have to see.

[you do that, Harlan. He's just gonna stroll right along behind, sword resting on his shoulder, his other hand in his pocket. It's a coliseum, right? He can have a seat on one of the benches and watch the show.]

[Harlan just rolls his eyes and scans the area until he finds a handful of nasty crab things all clustered together. Perfect. He waves a hand, and a barrage of hailstones the size of baseballs comes crashing down on the crabs. The force is great enough to crack right through their armor, and by the time the storm is done, only one crab is left alive--and barely, at that. It's half-frozen and limping, so Harlan finishes it off with a spray of acid to the face.

Boom. Magic. And he hardly had to move.

He looks back at Law and ticks up an eyebrow.]

[from his seat on the lowest tier, Law makes a vaguely impressed face]

Not bad.

[he doesn't look terribly surprised, though - and he isn't, because he's seen Logia powers work the same. Being able to use multiple elements at will, though, that's definitely new]

Much better than turning yourself into a useless object. [big smirk] Though I suppose you'd make decent camoflage in plant form.

[His eyes narrow. That definitely warranted more than a "not bad".]

How many times have I told you that wasn't on purpose? And it happens rarely. That's, like, the second time ever, and I use magic daily. Like you've never made a mistake before.

[his smugness flickers for a moment. Mistakes? Well, it does take time to learn how to control such an ability, after all.]

If I have it's because people squirm around too much. There's no way for my ability to backfire on me like that.

[he heaves himself up, shoulders his sword, and comes on down with hands in his pockets again]

Do you really need my approval? I said it wasn't bad. Could be useful if this kind of attack is a regular occurrence around here.

[He scoffs.] Yeah, I'm sure every mistake you've ever made has been because the other guy fucked up.

[He's not in the mood for this. Ughhh.]

It is, actually, which you'd know if you read the guide. [Why has nobody read the guide!!!]
