It's early in the morning when you feel the telltale thud of hitting hard-packed earth. Whether you're used to the feeling or not, you'll probably have a bruise or two from hitting the ground, which is another way to say Welcome to Hadriel!
In our beautiful city of Hadriel, you can find many treasures and wonders, like the creepy cat clocks, or the baby face cuckoo clocks, or some dali clocks, or... well, they're all clocks, and lucky for you, they all have different times set on their hands!
Be careful not to spend too much time lingering around with the timepieces, as there are monsters afoot! You should be careful or you'll be overrun by war crabs! These mollusk-like creatures are several feet in diameter and a few hundred pounds, so be careful when dealing with them! They're also capable of utilizing their steam-powered machinery to launch rusty grenades and musket bullets at you- don't think that close range is a good idea either, as their sharp pincers can amputate entire limbs, and they're quicker than they seem.
You might want to get out of this place as soon as possible- maybe one of the other folks around you can lend a hand? Sure, they might be just as confused as you, but there's strength in numbers, after all!
After you've find your way out of the colosseum there's plenty of other distractions. Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers August 10th-16th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[She's also heard that newcomers show up pretty regularly, so happening to bump into another one isn't a surprise—but it's strangely reassuring to know she's not the only one still finding her feet right now.]
But I'm not trying looking for a way to take vacation photos. [Cave city isn't in her top ten list of vacation destinations anyway.] Back home, I'm a journalist—through a lens is just how I see a lot of the world.

Well, that wasn't exactly the answer I was expecting. I just thought you wanted to take pictures of the flora and fauna around here. Seems like that'd be right up a girl's alley.
[ he shrugged ]
I suppose I could keep a look out for a camera, though, but it might cost you. [ the latter is said with a smile and a wink because, well. Elena was a pretty gal and Dean did have a reputation to maintain. Even if his heart wasn't quite into it. ]

A girl's alley? Riiight. I wouldn't mind documenting the monsters, but not right off the bat.
[He's in luck: she only gives him a mildly exasperated smile in response to his offer.]
Sorry to tell you, but I don't have any money with me. I didn't even have shoes when I showed up.

And here I thought I was in bad shape. I somehow managed to lose a whole car.
[ he glanced down at her feet ]
At least you don't have to worry about rusty nails anymore although I have heard there's a clinic.
[ and jeez, it ain't like he meant that as an insult! He's used to running into feisty women. ]
no subject
I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need to visit, but just being here throws all predictability out the door.

Tell me about it. I wasn't exactly planning on showing up here today or any other day. Maybe we should set-up a support group. I've also heard there's a bar. [ speakeasy, whatever. ]

[Hey, she's not going to pretend she's never turned to a bottle to help her deal. Keep it to the short-term and there are worse ways of coping.]
This may be the weirdest thing I've experienced, but I've seen worse. That's worth keeping in mind.

Maybe not healthy, but at least we'd have plenty of things to talk about. [ and maybe a few heads to nurse and not just from the hangovers. However, he can't help but take an interest at what she said. ]
But since you mention it, what's worse than waking up in a strange place to a bunch of lobsters lobbing grenades at you?
[ Or shooting bullets, either/or. He wasn't really picky about one's choice of near death experiences. ]

I'll admit that I've never had to worry about assault by crustacean before. But back home, I'm a journalist—I've done some work as a war correspondent. Sometimes the on-site coverage got pretty hairy.
[She did lost one cameraman. Poor Jeff.]
no subject
Sorry for bringing it up. I really should learn to keep my mouth shut.
[ because he's seen men back from war and know it's just as bad for the people who cover it. No one should have to relive those kinds of memories. ]
At least now I know why you need that camera. I bet you feel naked without it.
[ the latter is said with half a leer, but honestly, he's just going through the motions of flirting. Any bit of normalcy is better then known. ]

[She'd gone to a few sessions with a therapist, but that was all. Nothing on the level of real PTSD. She waves him off.]
I do feel like something's missing without one, but I try not to do the hide behind the lens thing too much. Back home, I couldn't—I had to stand in front of it most of the time.
no subject
Well, I can't say I blame people for wanting to take a few pics of you. You are rather pretty. [ especially if you were into the athletic look ] So what happened? You get famous or something?
no subject
[She laughs.]
But you don't need my resume.
no subject
History, show, huh?
[ he coughs, clearly undone by the words "rip-off" and "college" mentioned in the same sentence and he needs at least half a second to compost himself. ]
Uh, right. Well, I certainly can't fault the resume but I have to admit, I rather wish I could see some of those reruns. Let me guess, you managed to win the whole show?
I lol'd a lot at the first bracket bit
[There's a fond nostalgia in her voice as she remembers the show. She doesn't regret moving to mainstream journalism, but it had been a lot of fun.]
I suppose the 'Survivor' part might come in handier here. Except there's no producers helping behind the scenes.
that's music to my ears!
Well, if I need someone to help me forage for food, I definitely know who I'm going to ask this time around. Even if you don't have some handy crew trailing behind you with a bag of trail mix just in case you get faint.
[ he winks and then he mentally backs up a step, appearing just slightly more somber. ]
Well, I can't say I particularly envy those of us here, but I have to admit, I'm a bit glad we've got an expert historian here on hand. Maybe you'd have better luck digging up some info on this place then what the other people have. From what I hear, almost the entire thing's a mystery.
[ and while dean doesn't mind a good mystery now and then, he usually much preferred just dropping into town and getting out in a week or less. Anything more than that usually just leads to trouble. ]
no subject
I know a fair amount about certain places and times, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. My husband's got a deeper well of historical knowledge than I do—he's already been trying to figure out more about what happened here.
[It's just too bad he hasn't been able to make much headway. That doesn't mean he, or anyone, should give up. They can't.]
no subject
Oh. So you two came together?
[ like a couple? Damn... ]
no subject
Separately. Apparently, he's been here for almost four months without me. Which surprised me, because I remember talking to him on the phone an hour before I got here. Imagine that—the interdimensional kidnapping thing doesn't follow sensible rules.
