By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[Shakes his head emphatically.]

He helps me if I hurt...! Nothing bad is going to happen to him.

[Yusuke looks too scared of him and too upset to actually make him go away, though, backing up against the wall and still trying his best not to cry. He won't actually cry though, not when his mentor would scold him for being undignified, if he saw him like this, but it doesn't stop his bottom lip from trembling.]

[Little Law is not at all nice, no, but being stood up to actually impresses him just a bit. His gray eyes shift away.]

He's not here. I don't know if you noticed but there's no one here we know. So it really doesn't matter one way or another.

But...!

[Yusuke just wants to write him off as being mean again, but he can't deny there might be truth to what he's saying. He bites his lip.]

W-what should we do?

That depends. Do you have something you want to do? Otherwise, the alternative is to just lay down and die because you're useless.

[still not a ray of sunshine, no. But he also doesn't necessarily have the leadership skills yet to drive people to do what he wants]

[Yusuke flinches at such a harsh response, and he can't help it any more: his eyes well up with tears and he buries his face in his arms, trying to stifle his sobs.]

[sigh. Well, he tried in his own...terrible, heartless, cruel, evil way.]

Is that your answer? Hmf. I'm gonna die anyway so I'm going to get something done before I do. Stay here and cry for all I care.

[foxpup]

[He covers his ears and scrunches his eyes shut, like he can't bear to listen to him any more.]

W-we're not going to die! Stop it!

[he's actually quiet for a moment, and his face falls, almost sadly. Almost, but not quite.]

Maybe you won't. But I will. I have three years, that's it.

[foxpup]

[Unscrunches his face long enough to look at the other boy, and he's surprised enough that he stops crying a little.]

... Are you sick?

[hot_mes]

[Law nods silently, and tugs aside the collar of his grubby shirt enough to reveal a small patch of white skin on his chest]

You can't catch it, though, so be glad for that.

[foxpup]

[Yusuke doesn't look very glad. He gets to his feet to look at his chest, and goes very quiet, silent tears still leaking from his eyes.]

My mom was sick, too...

[hot_mes]

[thanks Yusuke, you're a bro. Maybe he'll stop antagonising for a bit]

What did she have? Was it fatal?

OR NOT?]

[Wipes his eyes on the back of his sleeve, nodding mutely.]

She had-- seizures. Her health was always poor, but one day it was very bad, and...

[He hiccups, falling silent. The other boy might be scary, but Yusuke can sympathise with him, at least. Maybe he's scary because he's scared, too?]

[it's true - beneath the pure mental snap of the suffering he's endured, Law's tough act is to hide his fear of death. It doesn't matter if he knows how much time he has left, that ticking clock is scary.]

Ah. Yeah, that's bad. My father...he was a great surgeon but he said it's really hard to fix things in the brain like that.

Yes. Sensei took care of her, but even he couldn't help with everything...

[Yusuke sniffles, still distraught, but he collects himself enough to bow his head politely.]

I apologise for shouting at you. I'm Yusuke Kitagawa.

[hot_mes]

[he shakes his head, though not saying whether he rejects the apology or just awkwardly doesn't want one]

Just call me Law. [he doesn't know if he's still under orders not to give his full name or not] It sounds like you've had a good run of luck, Kitagawa.

Very well, Law-san.

[He straightens, then looks puzzled.] Luck...? I don't understand.

[hot_mes]

It could be a lot worse. [shrug. You still have your health!] Whatever this weird place is, at least it doesn't look like anyone is trying to kill us.

[foxpup]

You don't think so...? [It sure sounded like he thought they were both going to die a few seconds ago, but he's not about to bring that back up if he can help it.]

Um... Perhaps we should look around. Someone could help us. --They might even have something to help you feel better.

[That last part might be a little too optimistic, but maybe it will help Law stop feeling so scared.]

[shh let's just forget that he tried to be threatening. It's over and done now.]

I'm fine, for now. If this isn't just some orphanage for kids, there's gonna be adults around somewhere.

[still doesn't trust any, though. Not unless they can show themselves to be as strong as his new boss, not soft like all the dead adults back home]

[Yusuke was raised not to trust anyone besides his Sensei either, but for now, he's not sure what other alternatives there are.]

If there are, I hope they have some water... It's so hot...

Yeah. This place is shit.

[he starts walking, not caring much whether Yusuke follows but figuring he might]

There's some big ponds over there, though. It might not be clean but it's something.

[opens his mouth to say something about Law's bad language, but thinks better of it, and hurries after him.]
