By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

I mean, this isn't Earth. See the two suns in the sky? And, you can try, but if he's not here, you won't be able to reach him.

[Abigail stares up at the sky. Her voice grows more desperate.]

It's got to be an optical illusion and there must be a way to reach him. I can't let him down. I can't have left him.

[she's trying to soften the blow, but she's not very good at it]

I hate to say it, but I think you have. This is a place called Hadriel. Do you still wanna try calling your dad?

[Abigail nods, her voice growing more desperate.]

Yes, please. I don't know this place but he'll know what to do. He'll find me.

[augh, what to do? usually, she skips out when emotions get involved.

she reaches into her purse and pulls out her phone, offering it to Abigail] Here. You can try to find him on the network list. You see where it is here? [she points to the icon]

[Abigail looks at the phone]

Yeah, I see it. But he wouldn't be on any network list. He kind of stays off the grid. I know his number though.

[what to say to that?]

Well. Give it a shot and call him?

[Abigail nods and tries calling, growing more frustrated with each attempt.]

It's not going through. I don't understand. He'd never turn his phone off with me missing.

[Laura shrugs and tries to look neutral]

Maybe he doesn't know you're gone yet?

[Abigail shakes her head, trying not to let panic set it.]

He always knows where I am.

[Laura looks at the girl and figures she's got to be in her midteens]

Always? That doesn't sound fun. There have gotta be times when you just want to go out and do your own thing.

[Abigail nods.]

Oh, yeah. Marissa's always texting me with things we could do, parties to go to, or to just hang out. But my dad wouldn't like it. I go to school, to his construction site, then home with him.

Maybe next time Marissa texts you about a party, you should go. Maybe you'd meet someone? And you're old enough to do things your dad wouldn't necessarily like.

[Abigail shakes her head. The idea of meeting someone, seems impossible. Her father doesn't even like her having one friend.]

Oh, no. I could never do that. I can't even say no to my Dad. And if he thought Marissa was a bad influence, he wouldn't let us be friends.

[this girl needs to be taught how to misbehave]

You're how old? Fourteen? Fifteen? Every girl that age needs to get out a little, sow some wild oats. And what your dad doesn't know won't hurt him.

But he would know. He knows everything I do.

[It isn't logical. He has Abigail so brainwashed that she sees him as almost god-like.]

Everything? He can't possibly know everything. Especially if you're quiet and sneak out of the house.

[as soon as Abigail goes back to her true age, Laura's finding her again and taking her out for a night on the town. or what passes for one]

[Abigail looks at her with wide eyes.]

[Abigail's not sure what he'd do; she only knows it'd be bad.]

[Laura tries to go for Laura-logic]

He always knows where you are? That's not exactly normal. Not for a girl your age.

How old are you, thirteen? Fourteen? When I was your age, I was sneaking out and going to parties all the time.

He's very protective.

[It's the best word she can think of without making her father sound as creepy as he actually is.]

Not me. How did you sneak out? Wouldn't your parents have heard you? Or seen you?

[her parents were protective, but Laura was always better at sneaking than they were at protecting]

There was a tree right outside my window. I'd just open the window and climb down. [a hint of irony goes into her voice] Besides, my parents knew I was a "good" girl.

My dad thinks I'm a good girl too. I'm his whole world.

[It doesn't feel right when her father has her mother and his work.]

I think it's everyone and everything else that he thinks is bad. He wants to keep me from all of it. Sometimes, I feel like if I didn't have to go to school, he'd lock me away.

I was my father's whole world, too. It didn't end well. For me.

[Laura sees something of herself in Abigail. what she could have become, for good or bad]

Maybe everyone and everything else is bad. But you can't hide from it forever. And you know what? If you didn't have to go to school, he probably would lock you away.

[Abigail's extremely curious as to what that could mean. Her mind is full of ideas, all the thing she fears that her father will do to her eventually.]

I'm sorry. I guess you're glad to be here then, away from him.

[Wherever here is.]

Guess I should be grateful for school then. I am planning to go to college someday. When I'm too old to have to follow his rules.

[in Laura's case, it was being raped by her demon-possessed father, then being murdered by him]

I'm very glad. I just wish I hadn't had to die to come here.
