By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[Oh dear, that reaction just has her laughing.]

You so are! You're just as much a kid as I am.

「Why is she laughing, Ra, help him! He stands and straightens as much as he can, trying to appear taller. It's not really helpful.」

No! I am the king and you must do as I say!

[For a moment, Lup looks absolutely unimpressed. Atem, with his skinny body and youthful voice, sounds just like her brother whenever he's trying to throw a little authority around.

But then her eyes drop back down to his pendant, shining and golden, and then down to the rest of his clothes, which aren't anything like her rags. Even if he isn't a king, he's someone.

Which means that, wherever he's from, he may have a hell of a lot more than just a single golden pendant stashed away.]

King of what? I don't even live here.

「He's a king, shut up!」

It doesn't matter! You don't stop being who you are just because you're somewhere else! I bet you don't stop being mean wherever you go, do you?

「He usually wouldn't get so worked up about something so silly, but times are rough!」

[Lup's been called a lot worse names than mean (usually by adults), so the insult comes and she just rests her hands on her hips and glares right on back at him.]

No, I don't. [at least she's honest] But I'd rather be mean than a bratty king who just wants to boss people around. At least I have friends.

[Er, one friend. Who is her brother. But that counts, right]

「That makes him flinch and cower, it lasts but a second before he tries to stand tall again, but he's shivering a little, his eyes glisten and his lower lips quivers. He bites it, hard.」

I have friends too!

「Not really no, they are not there, he's alone and on top of everything, he's being denied of his right as king, his father would be so disappointed.

The thought just worsens it, and his eyes prickle more but he doesn't dare to blink.」

Ha! [Lup catches that prickle of tears and she can't help but rub it in.]

Told ya so! [She just has to stick her tongue out in victory for that one.] Lucky for you, I happen t' make a pretty great friend.

「He manages to keep up with the act just for a bit more. Until she says that last. Lucky for him? What is she implying...? That makes him lower his defenses, if only a little bit, he blinks a couple of times, not that he could hold it any longer, and soothing warm threads fall from his eyes. Trying to hide it, not that it's not super obvious, he turns away from her and tries to dry his eyes off with the back of his hand really quickly.」

You're all talk, I don't believe you.

[Lup's been made a bully by other bullies, so it's like second nature to her to catch when someone is trying to hide their tears. She's caught Taako doing it a hundred times in the past, right before she'd come running to brawl it out with whoever was picking on her brother.]

I've been pretty honest with you so far, haven't I? I never lie. I'll be your friend. [a beat] If you'll let my brother and me crash with you. You must have'a giant palace, right? No one'll even know we're there! We'll be quiet. We just wanna place to stay. [Somewhere a little more permanent.]

Then we can play every day and stuff.

「Atem's eyes get a little bright at the invitation, he'd love to have a friend! And her brother too? That's just too good to be true.

Which just is anyway...

His little shoulders drop and he looks at his feet instead.」

I'm sorry, I don't know where home is... I don't have a place to stay either.

「After all, she was right from the beginning, he's no king here. And now he's gonna be alone forever.」

Oh dag... [Lup's ears droop a little at that, but she's not just going to give up on the idea completely. She can make this work.]

Well, maybe you can hang out with us until we find it. You ended up in this place somehow so sometime you gotta go back, right?

「Can he... really...?! Don't let emotion take over, don't--

Too late. He rushes those couple of steps towards her and just throws his little arms around her, holding her really tight. The sole idea that she still wants to be his friend is enough for him. He needs someone to desperately (literally) cling to.」

[AHHH how does emotion????

Lup jumps a little at the sudden hug, she's really not used to being touched by anyone but Taako, but eventually gives the boy a little pat on his back, even if it's a little awkward.]

Jeez, I'm not gonna let you live out here on your own. My brother an' I've experience. We'll teach ya.

「It's not like him to go hugging random people around, but he did and now he's gotta deal with it. He didn't expect to feel so lonely after just having lost his father, and finding himself in a complete unknown place, she's been so far the first to offer him that he longs for. He clings to her only for so long until he realizes he might be the wrong thing to do. Often... he doesn't see it. Often he just does what he wants, but now he cannot go around doing just what he wants, not anymore.」

T-thank you... S-sorry.

「He doesn't dare to look up at her.」

[To her credit, Lup doesn't pull away from the way he clings to her, her hand just patting gently at his back for as long as Atem needs to clean.]

S'cool. What's your name, anyway? I'm Lup.

「He's still embarrassed, of course, this is so not like he should be behaving.」

Phara-- I mean, Atem, just Atem.

「He might as well stop playing king anyway.」

...Why... are your ears so big anyway?

「This time he asks shyly, truly curious.」

Cause I'm an elf, you nerd. Why're yours so short and round? Doesn't that make your hearin' not so great?

Because... I'm human...?

「Yeah, right? He says as he touches his own ears.」

And I can hear you just fine.

「At least he thinks so!」

Where is your brother? Is he safe being alone?

「Maybe... they should go look for him.」

[It drags a smile out of the girl, because duh, of course he is. She was just giving him crap.]

Bet I can still hear better tho.

[The mention of her brother leaves a frown tugging at her lips. She's been trying to not worry about it, but it has been a long time since she'd seen Taako running around...]

He's fine. We can take care of each other. [But there's not much taking care of each other when they aren't together. Crap.] I should go find him.

「No one ever gives him crap! This is new. But he gives her a little nod. She definitely might have better hearing than him.」

Like a hare...

「He means no... harm. Hares are cute.」

I'll help you find him.

「He says rather quickly. Please don't leave him alone?」

Really? [Lup gives the strange boy a look, like she doesn't quite believe him.]

Why? What do you get out of helping me?

I don't wanna be alone.

「He could go on an say something different, something a little less selfish, but it wouldn't be the truth.」

[His honesty is enough.]

Fine. You can come along. But if my brother an' me get into a fight, you gotta take my side. Got it?

[Just in case, ok. She wants to win.]

「He nods, rapidly-- but then...」

Why would you fight your brother?

「That sounds so mean!」
