Event Log: The Hope of a Child

By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

Cano can sing them for you? [ He offers ]

Mace, and Alerie! Them's nice names too! Cano's atto is Feanaro, and he's always very busy, but he tries to come home to put me to bed every night with a story.

You can? Please do! [she clasps her hands and gets ready to listen attentively]

Thank you. They're both very kind and father has a good singing voice. And it's so sweet of your atto to try and make sure he's home to tell you a bedtime story.

I think so too!

[ He grins at her and then opens his mouth and...

it's a child's voice, a clear piping treble

but it's more than that, it's light and it's joy, it's the bubble of a mountain stream, the cold and the rush and the life. It's the silver purity of light in dark places, burning untainted and undaunted, a million diamonds in a velvet sky.

It's the voice of he who will one day be the greatest bard of the Noldor, who can spin the world into living song. ]

[once he starts singing, she just gapes. eyes wide-open and staring, amazed, at him. she's never heard singing like this before and it's not just beautiful, it is beauty itself. she could feel what he was singing, as clearly as though she was there, witnessing what was being sung about. she's momentarily overwhelmed]

[after she comes back to herself, she starts clapping enthusiastically]

Oh, that was wonderful! Amazing! I loved it!

[childofthemusic]

[ He beams at her, shyly pleased to have made her happy ]

T'ank you. [ He says bashfully ]

Cano's glad you liked it.

[impulsively, she reaches her hands out to take his in hers]

It was beautiful. You have a real gift.

[ He squeezes her hands back and grins ]

T'anks! Cano's only learning, still. One day, Imma be famous and go down to the Swan Havens to sing for the King and Queen!"

[she squeezes back and doesn't let go]

You're only learning? So you're going to get even better? That's amazing! And I'm sure that you'll be very famous and you'll definitely get to go sing for the King and Queen.

[childofthemusic]

Yep! But Mistress Elemmire says she's really happy with my progress, so's maybe I'll get my masters before I turn fifty!

[roseofthetyrells]

I'm sure you will. If you have to wait until you're fifty, that's a very long time.

[childofthemusic]

Yeah. [ He sighs grumpily ]

But normally, you can'ts get your masters before then - even atto only got his when he was fourty, and he's a genius! Mistress Elemmire says most people don't get it before they turn a hundred even!

Before they turn a hundred? No one lives that long! Do they?

[childofthemusic]

[ He blinks at her confusedly ]

'Course they do. Hundred's when you's a proper adult, but that's aaaaaaaaages away, Cano's not even twenty yet.

[roseofthetyrells]

That's so different from my world! There, you're a man grown when you're sixteen and a woman grown at your first red flower. [she giggles] You're almost twelve years older than me, but you don't look a day older!

[childofthemusic]

[ He makes a soft noise of surprise ]

But sixteen is still just a baby! Cano thoughts you were the same age as me!

[roseofthetyrells]

[she shakes her head]

No, I'm eight years old! Our worlds must be very different.

[childofthemusic]

Whooaaaaaaa.

[ He shakes his head ]

That's so strange! When Cano was eight I wasn't even allowed to go outside by myself.

[ Mainly because at that age he would toddle off whenever he heard something interesting and fall asleep in random places ]

[she giggles]

I'm not allowed to go outside by myself, either. A daughter of House Tyrell would fetch a large ransom, so there are always Septas and household knights accompanying me.

[Margaery would lose herself in the gardens or one of the hedge mazes for hours if left to her own devices, but she's got to learn everything a queen needs to know]

What's a ransom? [ He asks curiously ]

And a septas?

A ransom is what happens when somebody abducts a member of the nobility. They ask for payment in exchange for their safe return.

A Septa is a woman who's sworn herself to the Faith of the Seven. She's never to marry or bear children. Instead, she serves the gods.

[childofthemusic]

Oooh, that sounds very mean.

[ He frowns ] But why can't she marry if she wants to?

[roseofthetyrells]

It is. There are brigands everywhere, even in the Reach.

[she considers] Well. . . she's sworn to the gods. No mortal man may touch her.

[childofthemusic]

Sounds weird.

[ He opinions ]

Cano thinks it would be a shame if a lot of ladies did that because then we wouldn't have enough mothers!

Grandmother says that poverty drives men to desperate acts. Which is why there's such an emphasis on acts of charity in Highgarden.

[it's a normal fact of Westerosi life, unfortunately.

she laughs delightedly] There are more than enough mothers! Very few women choose to become Septas. Most of them are younger daughters given to the Faith.
