Event Log: The Hope of a Child

By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

Well, that's not the hard part. I just... couldn't deal with the responsibility, I think? Seems a lot of work for little pay-off.

Really? But the--the pay-off is that everyone must do as you command! You have to be wise, of course, and capable. That's why grandmother is teaching me. But you seem both wise and capable.

[hasitsthorns]

I don't want people to do what I say. I'd rather they do their own thing, honestly. Commanding isn't my forte.

[ She says that and yet Rose does like her control.
Only in specific ways though. She's not about to dwell on it, however. ]

I don't know about all that. I've done some pretty stupid stuff in my time.

[roseofthetyrells]

But how does anything get done with everyone doing their own thing?

[Margaery likes being in control. in all things. it's part of why this place is so hard on adult her, all the uncertainty]

Have you learned from it?

[hasitsthorns]

Easily, I think. I never had any problem doing my own thing and it interfering with anyone else.

[ At some point, Rose learned it was just easier to decide what she could have control over. ]

I dunno. Some people might say not. I think so though.

Really? Your world must be very different than mine. What kinds of things do you like to do?

[it a hard lesson, but it's one Margaery will have to learn]

That's the important thing. That you feel that you've learned and grown from your mistakes.

[hasitsthorns]

I like to play music, mostly. That's kind of what I did for a long time.

[ As for learning from her mistakes, well... It's hard to say. Sometimes she thinks she has, but other times- She makes the same dumb ones over again. ]

[roseofthetyrells]

Music! [she claps delightedly] What kind of music do you like to play? You must be very good, to have done it for a long time.

[grown-up Margaery can relate. boy, can she]

[hasitsthorns]

[ Ah. Music is a universal, it seems. That makes Rose smile. ]

I'm not that good, but- I like it. I like all kinds of music. Especially the kind you can dance to.

[roseofthetyrells]

[she smiles wider] So do I! I wish we had music right now so we could dance.

[hasitsthorns]

[ Hm. Hmmm. ]

I mean, I got my guitar somewhere around here. I could maybe jam a little, if you wanted to listen to that. Can't promise it'd be anything like what you're used to but it's something.

[roseofthetyrells]

[enthusiastically] I would love to hear you play the guitar.

[a pause]

What's a guitar?

[hasitsthorns]

[ Oh. Oh, jeez. This poor, deprived child. ]

A guitar is... [ The blond trails off as she moves to where she'd let it rest against the trunk of a tree not too far away. ]

This beautiful thing.

[ Bam. One (1) acoustic guitar, on display. It's case is left off to the side. ]

[they have lutes? and the lap harp? but that's about it as far as stringed instruments go.

she watches curiously as Rose goes to retrieve something she's never seen before, but assumes it's the guitar. ooooh]

I've never seen one of those before. It looks like a lute, only prettier.

[she is very curious to know what it sounds like]

[ Exposing people of ye olden times to modern music is something Rose is all about. She doesn't hestiate in strapping the guitar over her shoulder so it hangs down in her front.

She gives it a test strum, single notes sounding in the air before hitting a whole cord. Her head tilts. ]

Huh. One second, it's a little out of tune.

[roseofthetyrells]

[and she's fascinated by this pretty, strong lady. she's nothing like the ladies of Westeros that Margaery has met, but she thinks she likes her better]

I can wait. I don't mind.

[hasitsthorns]

[ Given a couple moments of careful plucking and turning of the tuning pegs, Rose finally seems satisfied. She starts to strum an easy, slow-paced tune. It isn't long after that her voice follows. It's an airy mezzo-soprano that's nothing short of beautiful. ]

Last night I fell in love without you. I waved goodbye to that heart of mine beating solo on your lawn. Every aching wound will cauterize and bruise in memory of what we used to call in love. And only time will tell if violins will swell in memory of what we used to call in love, used to call it love

[in the meantime, Margaery sits cross-legged down on the ground, neatly arranging her gown around her. she watches Rose tune the guitar curiously. Westerosi instruments are nothing like her guitar.

after Rose finishes playing, Margaery scrambles to her feet, applauding enthusiastically and grinning brightly]

Oh, that was wonderful! You have a beautiful voice and I love your guitar. Do you--do you think you could teach me?

[hasitsthorns]

[ To that, Rose gives a simple bow of her head. While her musical inclination is one of the few things she's proud of, it's always nice to hear praise about it. ]

I could, yeah. At least maybe some easy chords. Like... most songs are only four chords? Some dudes even made a song about it.

[roseofthetyrells]

[and she should hear praise. Rose could make a comfortable living as a court singer and musician.

she claps again]

You could? Wonderful! I can learn four chords. Grandmother says I can learn anything.

[hasitsthorns]

[ She wouldn't have done well in such a confined space. This songbird isn't meant to be caged. ]

Alright, then- [ she starts, taking the strap from over her shoulder and handing the instrument over to Margaery. ]

First, you gotta' learn how to hold it right. Lemme' see.

[roseofthetyrells]

[while Margaery accepts being eventually not venturing far from her husband's keep as her destiny. she's not sure she likes the idea--she loves her horseback rides--but she accepts it.

she wiggles a little in excitement and takes the guitar reverently]

That makes sense. You can't go very far if you're not doing it the right way.

[hasitsthorns]

[ It's not anything Rose accepted. There again, her biting her handler is what had fighting instead of prized by some collector, so- It's hard to say if she'd make the same mistake again.

Probably. ]

Nope. So, put your hands like this- [ As she says it, she lifts the girl's hands gingerly into the proper place. ] How's that feel?

[Margaery had curse of growing up beautiful, rich, and from a Great House. her fate was always going to be marriage to a husband she didn't love. she tried to control as much about the situation as she could, but she couldn't account for the depths her mother-in-law was willing to sink to or the refusal of others to listen to her when it mattered.

she lets her hands be maneuvered into the proper place] That feels fine. What do I do now?

[hasitsthorns]

Why don't you try giving the string a few test plucks? Just light. Make sure you keep your fingers pressed down on the fretboard, too. You can move 'em though if you want and make different sounds.

[ It's a learning experience, really. This is the way Rose had learned, feeling out the instrument first in a way more intimate than textbooks or videos could provide. ]
