By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

A ... prince? I think....Atto says it's only....ce-ceremonial? Coz Grandfather's not going anywhere.

[Abigail considers Cano's young age and figures his father is right. He's young enough to have a grandparent around for a long while.]

Of course he isn't going anywhere, not with a special grandson like you. A ceremonial prince is still cool. Maybe you can even do a ceremonial wave, like this.

[She gives a small royal wave, the type she's seen the queen use on television and giggles.]

Cano's only the secondborn, so's I don't even have duties like Nelyo does.

[ Poor Nelyo, always stuck in formal robes and going to grown up things, bleah ]

Ooh! [ He copies her and giggles ]

Should Cano do that for special occasions?

You're lucky. I'm an only child so I have plenty of chores.

[Mostly centered around hunting, and butchering the meat. She spares him those details]

Maybe. If that's what they do where you're from.

[She doesn't want to get him teased when/if he returns home.]

It's what the royals do in England. And eat tea and crumpets. And talk like this.

[She speaks with a fake British accent and grins.]

Maybe Abigail will get a little brother or sister one day? Cano was the baby for a long time until atto & amil decided they wanted another!

[ He tips his head sideways as he considers ]

Cano's seen grandfather wave sometimes, though not quite like that. Don't think he'd mind?

[ He laughs brightly at the accent and attempts to mimic her ]

[Abigail smiles, though she isn't sure if she wants a sibling. It'd be nice to have the company, but she wouldn't wish her father on anyone else.]

How does your grandfather wave?

[She giggles and nods at the accent, still speaking in one as well.

Yes, just like that. And you can say silly things like pip, pip and cheerio.

[ He considers and then waves at her enthusiastically ]

He does that to atto and uncle and Nelyo and me! Cano isn't sure how he waves to other people.

[ He giggles again ]

Pip pip! Cheerio! What does that mean?

That's a good wave! Lots of energy.

[Abigail has to think a moment. Her first thought is the cereal, but that can't be right.]

I think it's a way of wishing people a good day, like you're telling them to be cheerful.

Yes! He's always very happy to see us, coz we don't live near him. We visit every sennight, but grandfather always says its too long.

[ He considers that and giggles ]

Pip pip! Cheerio, Abigail! You should be happy always.

That's like once a week? That's not so bad, gives him just enough time to miss you without getting lonely.

[Abigail smiles, even though she knows she can't promise cheerfulness.]

That's very smart advice. You should always try to be happy too.

Yep! [ He grins ] It's coz Atto needs lots of space for his experiments and Amil likes peace an' quiet when she's sculpting, and she says Tirion's too loud. But we spend a whoooooooole two days every times we visit.

[ He hugs her ]

Cano will! We cans cheer each other up!

Oh, wow. An overnight trip. I'm guessing it's a weekend so you don't have to miss school? I used to take overnight camping and hunting trips with my parents.

[She's a little surprised by the hug and returns it slowly.]

Do you need cheering up?

Yeeeeeeep. [ He heaves a great sigh ]

Although Atto says we're probably at the point where Cano'll have to go to Tirion for proper music lessons now, so I'll get to see Grandfather more!

[ He grins up at her and shakes his head ]

Nope! But Cano likes hugs.

That's cool! You get to see him and take lessons. What kind of music lessons? I learned to play the harpsichord.

[Abigail returns the grin with one of her own.]

Me too.

Dunno yet! But definitely harp, and voice. Cano wants to learn all the different instruments, but Atto suggested I take time to do them right rather than try to do too many things at once.

[ He grins ]

We'll be good friends then.

Your Atto is smart. You can get really, really good at one instrument and then try another one. I want to try the theremin someday, once I can play the harpsichord perfectly. Do you have a favourite song?

[Abigail nods.]

I think so too.

Whassa theremin? [ He asks curiously, and nods ]

Cano likes lots and lots, but my favourite is the one about stars that amil sings! It's about how they twinkle.

A theremin is a very cool instrument. It looks like a box with an antenna and you can play it without ever touching it.

Oh! Is it Twinkle, Twinkle, little star? I know that song too. It was one of the first ones I learned to play on the harpsichord.

Oooooooooh.

[ He boggles ]

How can you play it if you don't touch it? Yes! That's the one. Amil used to sing that to help Cano sleep.

The antennas make it work. There's two. One of them controls pitch and the other controls volume. How close you are to it, and how you move your hands signals the antennas and makes different sounds.

[Abigail hopes that's enough of an explanation. It's difficult to describe something she's only seen Hannibal use.]

My mom used to sing it to me too. And a couple songs about rainbows.

Sounds like fun! Is magic?

[She smiles at his enthusiasm.]

It is fun, but it's not magic. The antennas pick up the signals from your hand. Hannibal could play it really well.

[ He sighs sadly at the understanding that there probably isn't one here ]

Does Abigail know how to get one?

No, sorry. I don't think there are any here.

[She thinks for a moment.]

We could make our music. Do you know how to make grass whistle?

Aw. [ He sighs, but brightens at the thought ]

Noo... is like a reed flute?
