Event Log: The Beach Episode

Who: Everyone!
What: The event log for the transition to our new planet!
Where: The city, which has now been fragmented onto four separate islands.
When: May 27th-June 10th
Warnings: Surf's up! If by 'surf', you mean separation from your friends, weird sea creatures, and cold rainfall.

The sun and the sand and a drink in your hand- well, it all sounded pretty nice when you voted for the island planet, but ultimately what you're getting is a bit less glamorous.

The transition takes place instantaneously, with very little noteworthy shakeup, though those of you who are particularly in-tune with the supernatural may feel a bit dizzied or nauseated by the sudden movement. And that's exactly what it is: for those of you who are outside, the change is fairly noticeable, as in the span of a single blink, what used to be miles of desert is now rocky ocean. The city is simply in one place one moment, and then somewhere entirely new a second later.

And that somewhere new is exciting! The islands have plenty of landscape to explore and weather conditions to adjust to, fish to catch, and- wait, how do you get to the other islands? What if your friends or your home or the bar is on these other islands? Enjoy having to figure out who is where and how you're going to get by with only a small fraction of the city to work off of- hopefully those boats will come sooner rather than later...

► This log covers May 27th-June 10th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you drown or get eaten by an alien shark, let us know here.

"Canada's more boring."

But it's more a joke than anything else; Lance went to school in Toronto, and as much as he enjoyed it he definitely finds the US to be less boring.

As for the question, "It was... Definitely an adjustment at first, but there's something to be said for experiencing somewhere completely new, and in which things that are impossible at home are not just possible but normal."

He glances over at the ocean, then back at her again. "What about you? Is this place even noteworthy compared to where you're from?"

"No. It isn't," she replies. "It's empty, or at least it feels that way. The last place seemed barren but for the city, though I didn't get much time to explore. This one - well, we'll see, but with all this ocean I don't have much hope. It's hardly enough people to call it a city. It's a prison colony."

Controlled by prison guards who dare to call themselves gods, and full of people apathetic to their own shackles. She longs to escape to deeper water, away from shore, to see if Rey's suggestions hold true. Perhaps distance is the key to strengthening this world's connection to the chaos of the Abyss. Distance, and a far larger sacrifice than last time.

Lance | North Island | OTA

[personal profile] lifetothefullest 2018-05-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Shoreline | 27th]

[Well, Lance is not super happy to be on an island. It isn't exactly that he has something against islands, but more that he has the distinct feeling this is going to be both terribly inconvenient and terribly dangerous. How are they going to get from place to place? What if there's an emergency somewhere? What are they going to do when new arrivals show up, both in regards to the monsters and in regards to getting the newbies supplies and places to live?

It could be a lot worse, he supposes; it's not freezing or super hot, there are no jungle vines blocking the streets, and the city--or the island he's on, anyway--seems to still be functional. But 'it could be worse' is still not that much of a comfort, and he's just not impressed that they all ended up here instead of somewhere more useful.

But complaining won't solve anything, and so Lance is out exploring instead. As it is he's found one of the cliffs and has wandered cautiously out onto it; the sight is kind of amazing, as so annoyed as he is about the situation it's also really pretty cool. And a little scary, but the fall isn't that far, so as much as he absolutely doesn't want to fall in it isn't frightening enough to not appreciate the view.

If anyone's passing by, they'll probably hear him comment--]

At least it's not the desert this time.

[The Park | 28th or 29th | OTA]

[Okay, maybe this place isn't so bad after all. He's still a little annoyed by the practical issues, as well as losing the potential to have discovered something useful about the Null on the ice planet, but the rest of his irritation is fading a bit.

That's mostly because he's wandered to the park while it's raining, and there's just something serenely peaceful about standing under a tree and watching the rain filter through the leaves. He doesn't even care that he's pretty drenched at this point, because after the last storm back when they were underground he'd never really thought he'd get to see rain again.

But although he's enjoying it he knows not everyone else might be, and if he sees someone looking soaked and unhappy he'll take a moment to ask--]

Are you doing okay?

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2018-05-28 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Curufin just happens to be walking along the edge of the trees when it its starts to rain lightly. He sees a familiar figure. She has just thwacked her pen against a rock in disgust.

"As a matter of fact, I did vote for this," he answers blithely.
abyssalarcana: (screaming tearing bleeding)

[personal profile] abyssalarcana 2018-05-28 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Caedra reacts immediately as she glimpses him approaching. In a second she's on her feet, sword in hand. Aggression is the only appropriate response to someone she hates so deeply - and perhaps she can run him off before he tries to strike her.

"Fuck off, Curufin," she hisses, stepping into a stance that leaves her light on her feet and ready to strike should he come any closer.
so_dark_a_road: (by the laws of our people)

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2018-05-28 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Curufin has not even drawn his sword. Not that he wouldn't if she made even the slightest move to strike first. But he won't unless she does.

He opens his hands in a gesture of non-aggression and smiles. "We're on an island. There's no place to fuck off to."

He gazes at her for a moment and then adds, "You don't look very happy about this location."

"Go drown yourself," is her only reply.

No, she's absolutely not happy, and his presence doesn't improve the situation any. She doesn't care that he's pretending to be peaceful. He had one victory against her, one time, with the aid of a bunch of his friends and family. She knows he's quite strong but his cocky attitude toward her when he's alone absolutely has not been earned, in her opinion. She's confident that if it came to a duel, she would turn him into fish bait.

Michael didn't notice the city moving, but the Visitor did. At first he mistook it for the usual chatter, but then the cold started to seep into the clinic, and he realized the light was dimmer. Thank god it turned out to be the ocean planet, at least. He can finally go outside without wanting to just lie down on the sidewalk and fry like an egg. Of course, he doesn't get around to actually going on a walk around the new island until the following day.

It's during that walk that he spots the, uh, whatever is going on with Caedra. Some kind of weird sword ritual? Michael's never actually met the woman, so he doesn't immediately connect her with "that demon everyone talks about".

He stops to watch, quietly and from a slight distance, until she finishes her spell and the thorns appear. Huh. Cool.

"Was that magic?" That's a dumb question, but he's not great at conversation openers.

Oh, joy, an audience. It's hard to pay much attention to these things when casting these longer, more involved spells. Thankfully this one will last a full 24 hours before she has to re-cast it. Perhaps she'll wait a mere 12 though, and instead have it reset at night so she doesn't have this happen on a regular basis.

"No, you're dreaming," she replies with no lack of sarcasm, and leans forward with her arms folded on the porch railing to look him over. "Do you come from one of those miserable places without magic?"

i. [west island, imported houses, 27th]

[He almost doesn't notice when the city moves.

It's not the disorientation that gets him; in fact, it's the sound. He hasn't heard rain in months, and the sound of it pattering against the window immediately perks up a long ear as he tosses himself out of where he's lazing in bed and sticks his head outside.

Oh, shit. They've moved. He laughs, skittering down the stairs and outside to the sound of churning water and the grey skyline. Taako's grin only grows wider, as he cups his hands and yells to anyone in the vicinity:]

Hey! Come check this shit out! We're on island time now!

ii. [north island, park, 28th]

[Other people may be worried about being stuck on one island or another, but that's not what Taako's thinking about at all. This is the first time he's been somewhere with water after getting his memories back, and he intends to use that. Getting to the other islands are easy enough for a man who can become a bird, so the residents of the north island can be treated to a loud crash in the park at midday. If you come to investigate, you'll find Taako, standing over a tree trunk and orchestrating his hands like a conductor as a group of knives seem to be carving something out of the wood. He's muttering to himself, seemingly concentrating and lost in his own thoughts.]

Ugh, fuck, it's been years since I did this shit, how did I decide was the best way to do this again? Don't even have any oil, damn...

[For those who may have seen one before- it looks almost like he's making a surfboard.]

iii. [any island, on the shoreline, anytime]

[He's realizing, as the days pass, that getting around is becoming an issue for people. And when there's a need, the free market follows. And by 'free market', Taako means desperate people owing him for simple magical favors. So he patrols the shoreline, looking for people wistfully looking out to other islands, or otherwise those who may look hopeless before he slides up.]

Heyyy, you stuck here? I can get you anywhere you gotta go, y'know. No prob.

[Do you trust that smile? You probably shouldn't.]

Do I look okay, Dr. Sweets?

[Carlisle manages to bite his tongue before continuing, knowing that he should curb his temper, especially when speaking to someone who has been nothing but understanding with him; however, he's cold and soaked, and therefore finds it a lot harder to be as respectful as he ought to be, even to someone as painfully polite as Lance. He pushes his hair from his face, the moisture weighing it do, lose bangs hanging in front of his eyes -- they glow so vibrantly in the darkness beneath the clouds.

He pulls in a breath through his nose, pushing it out in a long exhale.]

My apologies, doctor. To answer your question, no, I am not 'doing okay.' You stumble upon me in a bedraggled state, but my bloodworts need tending to, particularly now that we have been removed from the blistering heat of that awful world we were previously trapped in.

[He didn't like the sudden change in scenery, but he has to admit that he liked the double suns even less.]

i. [west island, lab, 27th]

[The shift happens, and once again, she finds herself mystified.

Alphys had only ever seen the surface in media and television; even if the Underground often approximated weather conditions, it was areas you could move through, not things that could just happen. So when the rain starts hitting the windows, she's startled until she registers what it is.

They've moved. There's a whole new city, now. And that means a whole new Surface to get used to.

She finds herself standing outside, looking in disbelief over at the churning ocean with her mouth slightly agape.]

Is this... t-the ocean? It's... darker, than I thought it'd be.

ii. [west island, south coastline, later on the 27th]

[Well. This is a problem.

The last time Alphys was cut off from people she knew was the first time the city was under attack, so frankly, even though she can see the other bank in the distance she has reason to be wary. Sure, there's space in the Lab for her to stay, but-- her stuff! Her computer! All her pets!! Not to mention all her food...

Alphys can be found pacing the shoreline, tapping her claws together, biting at her lip, and looking just as anxious as most people know her by.

Looks like she could use a hand.]

"That won't work. I can swim."

The situation is mutual enough. He'd rather not be here either, but he is, and there's nothing to be done about that except to concentrate on adapting and surviving. The non-aggressive attitude contains no pretense. If he wanted to fight, he'd fight. He doesn't fear he'd end up as fishbait. But right now, he'd prefer that the two of them not turn this first day on this island into a bloodbath. What's the alternative to that? Talk is one.

Once the city's shifted, Gren goes to stand near the ocean, and he doesn't seem to notice or care that he's getting wet from the rain. He's looking out at the churning, wine-dark see and its rocky shores with something like familiarity on his face-- he was born on a Nordic island, after all.

He does notice, though, some lady having a temper tantrum not that far away, and her annoyed question.

"Nope," he says, "I voted for the iceball planet, but I'll take it. This is better than bein' in the middle of a fuckin' jungle."

He's not really built to tolerate heat, and he's real goddamn tired of being hot all the time after that stint in the desert. But oceans? He can handle oceans. He can handle oceans all goddamn day.

"Nothing that concerns you," she spits.

The point of her rapier lifts upward, trained on his sternum. One quick thrust and she could pierce a lung, and then she'll see how good he is at swimming.

He's not leaving, it seems, which means she'll have to drive him off. She speaks a brief Abyssal incantation and gestures in a tight circle with the tip of her sword, and a ring of white-hot flames bursts into life around her.

"Mind your own business."

"What was wrong with the jungle?" she replies irritably. "At least we would have a whole world to explore easily. Even if someone makes a few boats, we're mostly stranded here."

There is information to be gained on this world, she knows that. But the main reason they came here, supposedly, was that the Null would be less likely to find them. So what? Why keep running? Why not fight them head on? And if they do find this little city here, they're all just a bunch of sitting ducks now.

He has enjoyed getting his voice back, a veritable chatterbox until Maedhros in fond exasperation shoos him out to sing to the trees, and at least encourage them to grow, since he's in such a mood. So he's in the Orchard when the shift happens.

His first thought, however, is not about his brothers, or his cousin, or anything else. Oh no. Maglor lifts his head, and there's nothing but the Sea in his eyes.

"Oh!"

It's been so long. This ocean isn't his ocean, not the place where the gem he gave up everything for lies hidden in the deeps, still singing to him. But it's still ocean, and the Sea-Longing wakes in his heart. He makes a bee-line for the nearest stretch of beach, and can be found there for the first week, wandering up and down the coastline singing softly to the waves, and teaching the seabirds to sing.

[Alright, so as much as Kyna was all about the islands, she's starting to think that maybe she didn't consider all the angles. She didn't think the city would be spread out between them, which in her humble opinion is bullshit. It's easy enough for her to get around, though—she's been alternating between teleporting or turning into something with wings, and that pretty much gets the job done. It's not exactly sustainable, though.

When she finds Lance, she wanders over, looping her arm through his like it's second nature. Somehow she's not surprised he's taking a minute to appreciate the view.]

[The sun hasn't set just yet, but it's growing late. It helps Caedra orient herself in their new location, as she makes her way to the West island for the first time, early in her exploring. As much as she's upset about being stuck on islands, they do seem reasonably large, at least - it's more space than the city had before.

But she misses the desert. And she hates this gray sea and the buried memories that go with it.

Most of her exploration is on foot and as she makes her way sullenly down the coastline she spots a familiar silhouette staring out at the waves. He probably likes it here, she has to imagine. Even with her own preferences in mind, there's something sad about a pirate stuck in a desert.

With her fur-lined hood pulled up to keep the drizzle of rain off, she goes to stand beside him, folding her arms over her chest as she admires the early stages of the sunset.]

Jet is at the beach because he's never been to a beach, much less seen a body of water as huge as the one currently in front of him. The crashing of the waves and the whistling breeze coming off the water is a unique an experience as they come for someone who lived their entire life in a desert, and once he'd managed to keep Party from having a 24/7 tantrum over their current situation he'd started to head out this way fairly frequently.

He sees Delmar easily enough but doesn't rush to catch him, rather closing the distance between them naturally and falling into soft step beside him.

It's a good place to hide from the Null and a place where they might be able to find information. That makes it a decent candidate for 'places to go after you get your ass kicked by a bunch of robots' in his book, because they're going to need more information on the Null before they go toe-to-toe with them again. Just, like, in general, he can hear Taako, and that guy's voice is like 100cc's of knitting needle straight to his eardrum.]

[That is why today, on this morning, he is pissed as fuck to hear those not-so-dulcet tones yelling from probably like a block or two away.]

Kelson | West Island | OTA

[personal profile] kingforboth 2018-05-28 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
May 27th

Kelson didn't immediately notice anything was different when he woke up, having slept through the move itself. However, after getting himself ready for the day--something he was getting more and more used to doing alone, he almost hoped it wouldn't be too much of a shock when he finally went back to Gwynedd-- Kelson ducked outside and noticed the world was off. In fact, it was noticeably cooler than it had been, the sky was overcast with finally just a single sun. He could smell water. A simple stroll pointed to the reason, it was rather obvious. They were surrounded by water.

He had to admit, the weather was nice, much more to what he was used too, for at least part of the season in Gwynedd. He wished he could say he wasn't surprised by the sudden change, they had been warned after all, but he was. He hadn't expected the suddenness of it, and just how different it was. Kelson couldn't form into words what he had been expecting, having had no comparison, but it certainly was an experience.

"How are we supposed to get from island to island?" He didn't see any boats, and it was a little too far for a bridge, wasn't it?

<28th - onward

By now Kelson was really wishing he knew if the Deryni of the past could teleport. Being stuck with only half the city was grating. It wasn't entirely dissimilar to being stuck inside the castle during snowstorms but at least he had the entire castle! This was....there were people and places he couldn't get too when only yesterday it had not been an option.

He's taken to going on walks, because what else was he supposed to do at the moment? He was figuring out what was where, and at the very least, the atmosphere was very pretty. Maybe you came across him in a store, or maybe he was looking at the ocean crashing off the rocks by a beach or a cliff.

"At the very least, it's beautiful isn't it?"

Device

Or if you're stuck on a neighboring island, Kelson still has his device on him. Keep giving him practice on how to use it or he might forget.

Oh. That king she talked to for not very long at all at the last party. And she still couldn't decide what she thought of him. Somehow he'd seemed both restrained and crazy all at the same time. Maybe that came with being in charge and not that much older than her. Maybe he'd just been raised spoiled being nobility and all and that really wasn't his fault. At least he'd seemed willing to listen and learn a little bit, even if he was far too determined to make the people who were actually in charge really angry.

Better than some people she could name.

She perched on the edge of one of the cliffs, sitting with her legs dangling over the side and looking out at the water. It made her miss Percy. Her jeans were already soaking wet and she didn't even care. This time her hair is pulled back into a ponytail since it isn't a party anymore. At least she remembered to brush it this morning.

"Yeah, I guess. It kind of reminds me of someone." She had to bite back a sigh, and she probably should have stood up or something to be polite, but she at least looked up at him.

"Trying to keep yourself occupied, Your Majesty?"
